> I'm gradually replacing most of the software I use with software I conjure myself
Why?
It just so happens I am looking for a solid knowledge management application. Too bad this is Apple-only.
I've gone from Obsidian (No structure), to LogSeq (Love the structured notes, not configurable enough), to Org-mode on Emacs a few days ago, and I think I'm probably going to stay there.
I'm no expert on the subject, but I'm pretty sure Obsidian is winning not because it's great, but because it mostly doesn't suck, and it runs everywhere.
Do you have a better solution for cheating?
The problem isn't the web, the problem is greed is becoming more and more acceptable with every passing year. It's consuming everything.
But really who can blame them? Housing, health, cars, everything is unaffordable. Who can afford to be not greedy? People who would have otherwise lived quiet, content lives are now clamoring to get to the top of the hill just to survive before it all topples over.
Or maybe you stopped being able to tell?
In my very recent experience, it's good for routine things, but it consistently chooses the wrong sync primitives and dynamic abstractions for performance / extensibility. It puts everything in a Mutex/RWLock, which is terrible for write-heavy / contested values, and it prefers enums over traits, which is not extensible and can get inefficient.
But we're rapidly heading into a world where people no longer understand the difference, and therefore everything looks fine to them.
Conjecture supported by allegories that break down quickly. Arguments conflating the dot-com boom with the current AI boom even though the economics are wildly different. Dismissive arguments conflating anti-AI constituents with people who were against cars, etc...
AI is highly divisive. It's dramatically reduced the value of code, which has derailed a lot of careers who have built their entire adult life around the idea that code would remain valuable, while simultaneously driving others into a psychosis who believe that AI can do anything.
Reading through that thread it's apparent that nobody knows what they're talking about.
Agreed. Greed is consuming everything before our eyes.
Can't help but feel that AI is the killing of the golden goose. We thought it would kill jobs, but it may just end up killing entire industries.
Intellectual property incentivized many and laid many golden eggs, but why would someone toil to create a new algorithm to solve a problem if someone else is just going to steal it in hours?
But who knows, maybe imploding the software industry is a good thing. I may lose my house in the process, but I think we could all get back to touching a little more grass.
This is lovely. I really hope society returns to chasing beauty again. We need it.
The price is in the hardware.
Either the investors know something we don't, or the market is irrational.
I also have found that AI has not lived up to many of its promises and have dialed back what AI gets control of. My projects were turning into unmaintainable messes. The people who say coding is solved aren't paying attention.
Stocks historically haven't performed well during periods of high inflation.
You're just parroting a headline. They did not actually make a profit in Q2 when you take all of their expenses into account.
Humans are inherently religious, whether you see it or not. We all worship something.
What does that have to do with the conversation here?
One of the reasons people don't drink anymore is because they don't go out with their friends that much.
We're a very lonely generation.
Same, Astra is extremely RL fried, and nobody is talking about it. I used Astra for a few days on my personal project, and load times went from less than 3 seconds to almost 30 seconds because it kept using the wrong sync primitives and bad architecture overall.
It's endless comments like this that make me feel like it's the minority that's sane, which reaffirms the author's point.
Is it for a sustainable future, or just extracting maximum value from the user?
Agents are relatively easy to influence. What's to stop them from being prompt injected to hand over all of their money?
What would it take for them to add a spring to the hinge? I would love a foldable that opens with a flick of the wrist without the need to pry it open.
This has little to do with NY governing NY. NY was attempting to govern Kalshi in other states, which it doesn't have the authority to do.
My computer freezes for 2-3 seconds when I try to open the volume panel and there are ads everywhere on Win 11. It's like Microsoft wants to wipe every good memory I've ever had with past Windows experiences and just accept the present.
Mozilla if you're listening - now's your chance; please bring it back. We actually have a reason to switch now.
All you did was offer your arbitrary opinion without any supporting argument or anecdotal evidence and suggested we should fix it with more taxes.
If you're going to offer an opinion contrary to the majority, you should at least have a convincing argument why.
