Re:Training Computers to Find Future Criminals on Wednesday July 20, 2016 @12:47AM (#12126956)
Just for the record: I didn't play a "card", that was a genuine question.

I didn't want to escalate, I think the escalation was already done by the man who "jokingly" called his project the "Minority Report".

If you can't talk about pathological behavior with the appropriate words, it's getting difficult to discuss this. The commenter you booted out was showing very similar behavior btw.

Not every psychopath/sociopath (I know it's getting muddy there) is out to eat people, but they all fundamentally lack empathy and usually compensate with power, and sarcastic, deprecating snark is just that.

Re:Training Computers to Find Future Criminals on Tuesday July 19, 2016 @03:41PM (#12124267)
What happened here? There was a whole thread coming after that?!
Re:Training Computers to Find Future Criminals on Tuesday July 19, 2016 @01:15AM (#12119873)
The nonchalance of these people is what really terrifies me.

They just laugh any valid criticism off and start using the references "ironically" themselves.

I don't understand how they can do that; do they not have a moral compass? are they psychopaths?

Re:The Science Behind Honey’s Eternal Shelf Life (2013) on Wednesday June 22, 2016 @04:43AM (#11952343)
Conclusion: Internet is not made of honey.
Somebody has told me, that this would be bad because "something" (I think entropy?). I didn't understand that.

Can somebody with sense please explain if this is a good or bad idea?

Re:Ketamine and Depression: A Breakthrough? on Sunday May 08, 2016 @02:12AM (#11652870)
You sure have the answers, pal.
Is it concerning, that I see a question like that on Stack Overflow or am I too pessimistic?
"Justified" is the word you're looking for.

We want it to be justified, not honorable. Nobody gives two shits about honor as soon as it is about "them" (whoever fits that definition currently).

Re:OSBoxes – Virtual Machines for VirtualBox and VMware on Friday April 22, 2016 @09:42AM (#11549058)
"100000+ happy users […] can't be wrong", right?!
Re:Creating signed GitHub releases on Thursday April 14, 2016 @01:21PM (#11498653)
Git is essentially a Merkle DAG, thus a single reference to the root object suffices.

Also collisions are only practical with large amounts of padding which would be visible. That's why nobody really cares too much about them for source control systems.

Re:CaptionBot by Microsoft on Wednesday April 13, 2016 @12:39PM (#11489775)
For science: it only states "I think this may be inappropriate content so I won't show it" which is a shame :)
Re:CaptionBot by Microsoft on Wednesday April 13, 2016 @12:33PM (#11489701)
Truth to be told it wasn't off too far.
Re:Nantes Métropole completes switch to LibreOffice on Thursday March 24, 2016 @10:40AM (#11353134)
A city might get away with using LibreOffice, a small business however cannot. The main problem is not the program but the file formats and compatibility to other MS products.

Also: in my personal opinion, LibreOffice is horribly stuck in the 90s. Again also: where's the PIM? WTH LibreOffice, WTH?!

Re:On David Lynch's 'Dune' on Wednesday March 23, 2016 @05:09PM (#11348264)
It's too easy to criticize the film, but I wouldn't want to be in Lynch's shoes. He was too inexperienced and the book is far too large and there were many other constraints. All in all it must have been a terrible experience.

I however really like the art style. A weird mix of 19th century uniforms and steam punk(?). Also: The navigator is the best navigator I've seen so far.

Re:VPN Comparison Chart on Wednesday March 16, 2016 @08:01AM (#11296620)
But it always redirects to it ... :/
Re:Minecraft to run artificial intelligence experiments on Monday March 14, 2016 @05:45AM (#11281836)
So skeletons will be an even worse pain int the future?

On a more serious note: I really hope they improve the mod mechanism, it's really painful to use mods as it stands. And mods are a very big part of Minecraft.

As I understand it, Minecraft will be reimplemented soon anyways?

Re:Painkillers now kill more Americans than any illegal drug on Wednesday March 09, 2016 @11:29AM (#11253866)
I don't think there's much you can do here. There will always be those people who nod their doctor off and then go on and do what they want.
Re:OpenRoads on Thursday March 03, 2016 @04:06PM (#11220035)
Just for the soundtrack alone :D
Re:Why energy storage sucks on Thursday March 03, 2016 @07:29AM (#11216403)
Plus you probably cannot beat the cost efficiency. I see challenges for mobile applications, though.
Re:Canadians don’t live as far north as you think on Friday February 26, 2016 @09:30AM (#11181516)
That's continental vs maritime climate for you.

Rain or not, at least we don't freeze our asses (so bad) over here :D

Re:Bill Gates calls for terror data debate on Tuesday February 23, 2016 @10:00AM (#11159256)
I have the impression that the biggest problem is that these issues are not intuitively approachable anymore.

We have very similar issues with computer security. The majority of people have a totally different skillset and simply can't grasp these things. This is probably only getting worse as the technology behind our interfaces is getting increasingly unintuitive.

On the extreme end of this separation in our culture of specialists we may need a fundamentally new framework for trust. And maybe it's these the trust issues causing all these nonsensical surveillance ideas at the moment — to get "more control".

Image what happens if AI robots are roaming the earth, causing all kinds of post-humanity questions, and nobody really understands what the fuck is going on anymore.

The future is probably both horrifying and glorious :D

Re:Julius Caesar's Greatest Military Victory [video] on Tuesday February 23, 2016 @04:11AM (#11157565)
Also I think I remember that the Roman soldiers had a general command to entrench if they had nothing to do. (Like a, you know, "take the broom and clean the floor if you got nothing to do" kind of rule)
Re:When a Self-Declared Genius Asks You to Read His Masterpiece on Tuesday February 16, 2016 @12:34AM (#11108086)
I learned that people who need our help are rarely the people we'd _like_ to help — often enough quite the opposite.

That's why they need our help. I don't know a good answer to that problem.

It's best to develop a decent level of ignorance when it comes to social media dynamics :)
There was a time when I bought something I owned it and could do anything I wanted with it. That time is clearly gone.
Re:Bose's new beat on Wednesday February 03, 2016 @03:04PM (#11029315)
Ask in https://www.reddit.com/r/headphones/ Those guys are usually eager to help and your question would actually be welcome there. They usually have a sticky thread for recommendations.
Re:blip.strongloop.com is dead – what is this? on Sunday January 17, 2016 @04:00PM (#10921040)
I have long since come to the conclusion that most of the nodejs ecosystem is rotten. I don't even know where to begin.

I'm certain this is a mentality issue more than anything.

Re:RemixOS for PC released on Tuesday January 12, 2016 @01:51PM (#10889475)
I have it working on a Linux host as a Linux 64 bit guest with 2 GB ram. You have to change the input device from USB tablet to PS/2 mouse in the VM settings.

However, it's very slow and the taskbar is green most of the time. also, there's a test (block) cursor blinking in the middle of the screen.

Re:The rise and decline of Wikipedia [pdf] on Thursday December 31, 2015 @03:34PM (#10819543)
This should get more attention. I'm almost certain you have the source of the problem right. I just wouldn't be so sure and quick about your solution.

It would be really nice to have more extensive work on how to mitigate these kinds of dynamics as I'm certain we will see more and more of these projects and I'd like them to be healthy for a change.
