Re:Ask HN: Who is hiring? (May 2022) on Monday May 02, 2022 @12:31PM (#31237355)
Jefferson Lab | Newport News, Virginia | Full-time

My group at Jefferson Lab is hiring an entry-level software engineer. Jefferson Lab is a national lab in Newport News, Virginia, which specializes in experimental nuclear physics.

The main requirement is that you are familiar (and moderately productive!) with C++. You'd get to contribute to science and work with cutting edge physics simulations, neural nets, and GPUs. Note that this position is term-limited to one year, so it is ideal for a recent CS graduate or someone debating doing a PhD program.

We'd be particularly excited to talk to anyone who knows something about static or dynamic program analysis. Functional programming experience is also a plus.

Re:Why physicists still use Fortran (2015) on Sunday October 15, 2017 @05:39PM (#15479446)
I don't see Python displacing Fortran or C++, but I do see Python showing up in HPC as a platform for DSLs. Instead of handling the expensive part of the computation, Python acts as a UI layer / configuration manager / code generator. For an example, see fenics: [https://fenicsproject.org/]
Re:Autodesk's Idea to Knit the Hyperloop Out of Carbon Fiber on Saturday November 02, 2013 @01:58PM (#6660032)
This makes the Hyperloop concept feel vastly more feasible. And manufacturing carbon fiber at those scales will open up all kinds of new infrastructure/architecture possibilities. The biggest question on my mind is: how does one continuously infuse/cure epoxy?
