News for hackers. Stuff that matters.

bravoetch

That's a wild claim. 1000 non-status immigrant IT employees at one Texas company? Name it, it'll be global headlines if true.
I think that's their point - the subjects of the article should be working instead of hiking. But someone with an H1B visa, yet lacking any special skills, has a job instead of them.

I don't agree with their premise, just restating it.

What would they sue for? Nobody lost any funds.
Except that banks often don't unwind or freeze transactions. I've seen cases of both criminal conduct, and human error, leading to millions in lost funds. And banks didn't reverse or freeze anything. Yes it would be a security feature, but it's not used the way you assume.
This seems like pure projection on your part.
I might not know the trouble-shooting steps for a problem I'm having. LLMs may give poor answers, but they can help me find documents with good answers. That would be enough for most people.
Not sure about death being required. It's more that life after reproductive success is not required.

Do they claim that's the case? I don't think they do.

It's been a while since I was reminded of this xkcd: https://xkcd.com/435/

What does a backfire look like? It's ok to be wrong in the science/math world.
Re:Sharing AI progress in mathematics on Tuesday October 06, 2026 @06:47PM (#49985257)
In previous math sharing there was speculation about stealing human researcher's results or progress, via prompt inputs from those researchers, and sharing that as their own result. They're adjusting their process, and it seems ok.
Re:When did Google get so f-ing weird? on Monday September 28, 2026 @03:35PM (#49883255)
What search is better? I use DDG, and I also know search has been broken for years because of attention and surveillance economy.
> This is simply untenable. Institutions of all kinds have been keeping records connected to individuals for millennia.

This is the reason privacy is needed.

> Try to run a school when you can’t maintain data on the students.

Yes, we should try this. Zero-knowledge proofs and other modern technology allows for this. Even the first step of not selling or using student data for commerce is an easy step.

Those who think that we should not try to improve because our privacy is already compromised, should step aside.

Re:Good people refuse to do bad things on Monday September 21, 2026 @12:13PM (#49789213)
If everyone doing a 'bad thing' stepped off the hamster wheel today, the world economy would collapse before markets closed. The biggest companies have built an attention and surveillance nightmare machine that funnels all the money to a relatively small number of shareholders.
My journey went from downloading movies and TV shows to paying for Netflix, Apple, and Prime. Then back to torrents to avoid all the trailers and ads and curated feed. It's so peaceful now.
Re:Why I'm still bearish on LLMs after navier-stokes on Tuesday September 15, 2026 @07:34PM (#49720295)
I was a young child when I learned chess by reading a short book, then practicing with a friend. That is not how LLMs learn. I'm no expert on LLMs, but if you showed a human all chess games and books in all history and then said 'play chess' and they still kept making illegal moves, they would have to have a brain injury.
I like this idea. There's at least one system I know of in competition with your business model. In trading desks, the data of traders is analyzed ato reveal the better traders. Almost always it's because they have some kind of 'inside' information. Can be a small thing like a friend that works somewhere keeps giving them tidbits. Legal or not, this is reality. The finance companies take this internal trading data and build models based around those traders, and sell the trade advantage to their own customers.

I think your site needs to compete with that, and other existing systems for adding value to 'better traders'.

1 - How are people torrenting and not using a VPN? 2 - How are judges still allowing this business model of sharing files then trying to shake down people that download them?
Re:I Don't Have a Smartphone on Wednesday September 02, 2026 @02:06PM (#49540083)
I get it, I really hate it too. When I don't want to use my phone, I just leave it somewhere in the house and forget about it for a couple of days.
Re:Dyson CameraJet electric toothbrush on Tuesday September 01, 2026 @05:26PM (#49528471)
Dyson seem to be the champion of turning a cheap effective device that's well understood into the same device but an order of magnitude more expensive. Are people still buying it?
It's horrifying to see that our browsers give up anything at all. I feel like we need a new model where we just get served the content, and we don't serve up anything to the content provider. I feel ill.

Fort Collins, CO is probably where that rate is. I don't know of anywhere cheaper for residential electric.

They can turn your alarm off while they're fetching your pills.
Re:Park by Robot at London Gatwick Airport on Sunday July 26, 2026 @12:47PM (#49059877)
It's missing the value-add of valet parking - being able to pull up at the front door and walk away from your car. Without that, this is not valet anything. You still park then shuttle to the airport so there's zero benefit to the end user.
Re:Nothing works and everyone is euphoric on Friday July 24, 2026 @11:22PM (#49044207)
Old business models: Add value for the end-user, sell it on for a profit.

Current business model: venture capital is the end-user now. Grow the investment by addicting customers to some distraction. Nothing else matters.

That's not a bad idea, since we pay for the roads, not Google.
Re:Petals: Run LLMs at home, BitTorrent-style on Wednesday July 22, 2026 @10:56PM (#49016313)
As we've seen, that's a solution looking for a problem.
I read the article and didn't see anywhere if they collaborated with city planners, or just ran this on their own. I get the techno-optimism of making traffic 'better' and also it may be concerning if trucks are being routed through neighborhoods where planners didn't build for it.
Same thing, they clarify it right at the start of the very short article.
This article starts by repeating the same paragraph five times, then pretty much twice again with different wording. Was there even a human in the loop? I doubt it.
