Racism definition: "a belief or doctrine that inherent differences among the various human racial groups determine cultural or individual achievement, usually involving the idea that one's own race is superior and has the right to dominate others or that a particular racial group is inferior to the others."

No, it isn't "by definition racist"

Go get your CPAP. It will change your life. It will also extend your life.

No they aren't. No one is doing this anywhere.

I don't think it changes you. I think it reveals who you actually are.

"as well as the parts I don't want (which I indicate in-video)"

How do you indicate that in the video?

This doesn't excuse Apple's poor design, but I highly recommend Keyboard Maestro to solve this problem for you. You can assign keyboard shortcuts to actions in specific programs (and much, much more) ... super useful program.

Wow. This is an incredibly ridiculous and damaging statement.

It's sad that the only way you measure hard work and intelligence is whether or not someone has a six-figure income.

Some TVs these days come without tuners. Internet only.
That is an eye-opening book.
"Banks didn’t verify borrowers’ occupations or incomes. They qualified people for bigger loans than they could afford. They offered loans with monthly payments so low that borrowers owed more after they made a payment, rather than less."

This is part of the problem though. Banks and other lenders should be held responsible for handing out these loans. The onus cannot just be on the homeowners. For every person that simply wanted nicer stuff there are plenty who were fooled into thinking they could afford something that they couldn't.

> I genuinely do not understand Apple's move into this space

There are only so many markets big enough for Apple to consider entering. Cars is one of them.

Banking is another. They're allowing people to pay by phone now through credit cards. One day soon it will be an easy transition to just keeping your money in Apple Bank.

"Mr. Rad and his merry band of plaintiffs"

I sometimes really love legalese.

I think basically because (1) they can and (2) no one has stepped in to prevent them from doing it.

But it's absurd.

How about just require a photo upload and then look at the photo's metadata (time, date, GPS, etc) to match it up with the data they already have (i.e. where the driver is)?

Maybe built in the camera directly into the app so that the drivers don't have the ability to fake an image's metadata.

Really interested in what sensor boards you used to detect everything. Have you shared any of your code at all? Sounds like a really cool project.
> Duran has been living in the United States for over a decade, since he fled from El Salvador after his life was threatened.

And you purposefully left off the last 5 words of this sentence, which is pertinent information.

> His case supposedly stems from a deportation order filed in 2007, but Duran's legal team said he never received notice to go to immigration court in connection with the case.

> He has now been detained for months without charge, and his lawyers say it is in retribution for his reporting on ICE.

Here are just two salient points you seemed to have glossed over.

I've been using a .cc domain for my email for just over 20 years. Twenty years ago some people were confused by the .cc, but overall I had only a few problems with that. And now it's not a problem at all. No problem with email validators either.
Re:The Secret to Better Social Media? Fewer Friends on Saturday April 14, 2018 @08:23PM (#16840369)
Because so many other things come into email – marketing emails, notifications, work-related emails, etc. that people don't check it as often.

Texting and other chat applications are instant.

Email used to be a more instantaneous thing, but it has evolved into something that many people want to take a break from, so sending an email might mean that the recipient doesn't see it for hours or days.

Re:FreedomBox on Monday April 09, 2018 @05:30PM (#16797177)
Dead on. And the comment you referenced is one of my favorite all-time HN comments…

"For a Linux user, you can already build such a system yourself quite trivially by getting an FTP account, mounting it locally with curlftpfs, and then using SVN or CVS on the mounted filesystem."

This is a perfect example of when tech-minded people get blinded to how complicated some things are for the masses.

Re:Netflix Is Ruining Your Life on Monday March 05, 2018 @09:34AM (#16521267)
From the author's bio: "Recreational golfer"

I could write a similar column about how he is wasting his time playing golf. Is hitting a ball with a stick and trying to get that ball into a hole the "most important investment you can make is in yourself"? Doubtful.

People waste time in many ways … and they enjoy life in different ways. Not all of life needs to be the constant pursuit of something more, better, new, etc. Sometimes it's ok to just sit back and enjoy it … even if that means playing a round of golf or binging a few episodes of a show on Netflix.

> Driving a car isn't a right but a privilege so I'm on with this.

The right to privacy IS a right and NOT a privilege.

So I'm not down with this.

Re:HomePod arrives February 9, available to order this Friday on Tuesday January 23, 2018 @01:37PM (#16216062)
You're not the target audience, obviously. Although you and I realize that what you're talking about is simple to do, for us ... it's not as simple for many other people.

So the idea of just having a single device that automatically integrates with your phone, etc. is appealing to many people.

Re:HomePod arrives February 9, available to order this Friday on Tuesday January 23, 2018 @01:35PM (#16216040)
I'd be interested to see how older people interacted with the device. I know someone who got their parent a device and they kept "Alexa" written on a post-it because they couldn't remember the device name.

It's a big shift in technology, but since it is voice interactive, rather than computer/smart phone, I think it does provide an ease of use for older people who might not be as technology savvy.

SNL did a great skit on this … https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YvT_gqs5ETk

Apple definitely missed the boat on this. Unless their speakers are leaps and bounds better in some way, I don't see many people switching.

Once someone has a couple of Amazon Echos, for example, why would they add a Google Home or Apple HomePod? I don't think anyone wants to have to configure several devices to have to do the same things (turn lights on/off, etc.)

Redirect through FB gets you past the paywall. Put the following in a bookmarklet and click it when on a WSJ page.

javascript:window.location="https://www.facebook.com/l.php?u="+encodeURIComponent(window...

They do it on a bunch of their products - maybe all of them, I'm not sure.

You can see pricing history (as well as set yourself price alerts) at a couple of different websites such as https://camelcamelcamel.com/

Oh … apparently we do have video. Off to find it now.
they are describing a very threatening movement

Yes, that is what they are describing. Because of course they are.

What we don't have is video.

And what we don't have is the other guy's account of what happened – because they killed him.
