The true costs of the "cheap energy" were hidden. The high costs of the new approach are directly caused by policy decisions.

There's some tipping point where it's too much. For example, when the interest on the debt >> defense spending. Agree it doesn't need to be fully balanced, debt is a useful tool.

In January their model estimated 2.4% https://web.archive.org/web/20250107140003/https://www.atlan...

The model is likely based on fundamental economic factors and rational decision making. The latter is why Q1 ended up with -0.3% growth. You could call this the Trump effect.

He is trying to "end the war" on terms that enrich himself, in vainglorious pursuit of a Nobel peace prize, and in a way that will almost inevitably result in a wider conflict very soon. Please don't pretend this is about "people will stop dying". That is utter nonsense.
Re:Ask HN: Promoted, but Career Path Derailed on Monday February 03, 2025 @10:09AM (#42918900)
You were promoted, moved to a flailing team and a new domain. This is a significant career opportunity and people are showing trust in you. I would focus on what is needed in the new area. Somebody else recommended you speak with the senior director who promoted you, to clarify expectations. That is good advice.
Re:Why Scrum Is Stressing You Out on Monday September 16, 2024 @12:04PM (#41557483)
When agile first started it was developer centric and brought in the ideas of continuous improvement, inspect and adapt, eliminating waste (handoffs, extra communication etc). One of the core ideas was to look at what was working/not working - if it's not working you drop it. Then we got the scrum cult. Ironically it has led to a huge amount of wasted time and effort, as well as stressed devs. In a lot of cases these extra processes get added by well meaning people who don't look at the whole system of work. If you can't drop what is not working then it's not agile.

Why I will never buy a Mercedes EV.
No. Veggies are much less expensive in many other countries with similar selections available. Something is different in the US.

A list of outrages by authorities worthy of a failed police state.

This happens so rarely it is quite memorable. However, we are all accustomed and innured to poor driving behavior.

Maybe you don't see the irony in anti-work kid using the youtube platform to spread cynicism about Corporate America while getting paid. His stuff is somewhat interesting, for about 10 seconds before you realize it contributes nothing to your life. Also, memes and urban dictionary slang? Are you serious? Don't be like this, indeed.

A time wasting animation delay before every single screen. A bit annoying for a "productivity app".
Re:Ask HN: When do you not give out stock options? on Friday September 10, 2021 @04:58PM (#28486819)
Lifestyle business. He's asking for equity -> he wants to be your partner. Do you want/need that?
Re:Irish police to be given powers over passwords on Monday June 14, 2021 @01:43PM (#27505603)
Quite correct. Just like “GB” (“Great Britain” or “Grand Bretagne” in the original French) means “large Brittany”.
Re:Developers can't fix bad management (2020) on Thursday June 10, 2021 @10:17AM (#27461056)
When I was younger I wondered what all these other people in the business did with their time. Surely it was all about the code and all these other corporate drones just needed to respect that. Then I guess I started moving over to the dark side and got a bit more empathy for the real jobs that other people have to do - so devs don't have to spend ALL their time talking to customers, paying the bills, handling the marketing etc. Strangely many of these people, even customers, were curious about likely dates for shipping the work. Turned out their jobs depended on it too. I recently interviewed an engineer working at a startup run by engineers. There is no management, which he thought he'd like. Instead they use commitment. After 18 months of very long hours and weekends guess why he wanted to move on? Organizing the work and the people is an art, lots of people get it wrong even when they try hard to get it right - but these articles? I hope my competition is reading them.
Clickbait for the kids.

"“For baby boomers and Generation X, it was quite common to stay in the same company for most of their working lives. Today’s working landscape is different, with millennials and Generation Z open to the concept of job hopping,” he continued.

“People changing jobs every year or two can be seen by employers as a red flag but, actually, it shows these people are ambitious, adaptable and knowledgeable, traits that every employer looks for.”

Generation X'er here. Pretty sure I remember these same articles being a thing - with Generation X being the job hoppers - back when I was ... younger. Job hoppers had a bad rep back then too. It all depends on how long and what you accomplished. Oh you say you invented tcp at your last job where you stayed for 6 weeks? Gonna be an interesting conversation, or maybe an entertaining one.

They might be shunning you due to your non-fact based opinions and consequent risky behavior: * I've had COVID and recovered * also don't get a flu shot each year * have continuously been near or around folks that have come down with Covid

And you think your family are the ones with the emotional arguments (!) Sorry this happened to you, but you're the one in the wrong here.

I’m looking at 5 houses and want to pick the best one. Of course I need to see the surveys now. Tell me which bank is this that will pay for the 5 surveys?

Re:Soft Skills in Engineering Leadership on Wednesday February 17, 2021 @11:01AM (#26167878)
This. It almost seems like people who lose all interest in coding/engineering/tech also lose respect for the people who do it, like some weird form of guilt/shame. This doesn't make them better engineering managers. You've got to keep that spark alive.
Re:Facebook senior software engineer interview on Wednesday January 06, 2021 @11:11AM (#25658963)
working at different organizations builds engineering and emotional maturity, no?
Re:Facebook senior software engineer interview on Wednesday January 06, 2021 @11:06AM (#25658918)
ditto. I like to play with these as a fun intellectual challenge, even though I've never been interested in FAANG.
Re:I sold Baremetrics on Tuesday November 10, 2020 @10:31AM (#25047029)
Congratulations on reaching an exit and good luck with the next venture!
These anonymous sources you mention are only anonymous to the readers. Typically a story from an anonymous source will be verified with multiple other sources, perhaps also anonymous, to make sure that the media source is not getting played. Here we have Hannity's former assistant writing a "sensational" story in a tabloid rated as the least credible news outlet in NY. Also, they apparently tried to keep their source anonymous but messed up. Really going to fall for this? Again?

"Sebastian Rushworth M.D." clearly states at the beginning of his internet post that it's anecdotal, even though his bio suggests he's trying to correct internet misinformation with "science". It absolutely shouldn't be censored. I mean, if I was considering taking this guy's medical advice - I'd want to know about this.
Re:How to Hire Great Engineers on Thursday July 30, 2020 @07:14PM (#24003835)
A great engineer in a small/medium company is not the same thing as a great engineer in a big company.

It will be interesting to see what happens with salaries, given increased world-wide competition for jobs.
