boogieknite
me either but i do know it will happen sooner than i expect
with code all i wanted to do was code. with a nursing at least ill want to leave it at the hospital (yes nurse ptsd is real but nurse pay is great in pnw)
i think it might be good to have a job i treat as a job and not a passion i carry with me everywhere
not an original thought, ive seen Her
suppose this is just another way to say, "wtf are we doing?"
im going to say this here just to vent it out once:
some part of me sinks into depression when vibe coders say "I" turned/did/made something. why does this bother me? smart managers i work with who actually build things as hobbies and used to build apps say this all the time so its not like it indicates someone is phony, it just really catches on my brain when i hear it
i know of at least two modern "prestige" directors, specifically Oppenheim and Matt Johnson, cite F For Fake as a major influence
id love if anyone has recs on other movies in the F For Fake spirit. my two cents from seeing it a few years back is that it was interesting but also quite zany in a way i found a bit dorky. now having seen You Can See Everything, i want to see more F-For-Fake-likes to compare
edit: added "modern"
> someone earnestly trying
and then there are occasions where someone orders in a language they dont speak because they assume the person taking their order cant understand english. being associated with someone performing that level of bad faith in public makes me wish restaurants had eject seats
> First television, then internet, then smartphones
i like vr so i sometimes wonder if itll catch on and if were in the "we know one or two people with a tv" era of the early 40s. theres certainly seems to be a financial incentive since it seems like tvs and phones have gone about as far as we can take them. its also certainly seems like a another leap down the isolation path as well
luckily i think most people reject vr bc it sucks to wear something on your face
edit: grammar (still bad but better)
as long as something works "good enough" and the code will never be reviewed theres only incentive to blast through tokens generating superfluous code. god forbid they actually ship a vibe coded product then they can basically ransom you for tokens
im probably being overly cynical but it sort of just seems like standard capitalism to me
more related to the term "surrounded by idiots": my spouse and i go on a big trip every year and in the few weeks leading up to it we both find ourselves feeling like were "surrounded by idiots" in work and life. noticed the pattern so well tell one other "ive entered the surrounded by idiots phase" once were close to vacation time
this has been on my mind a lot lately
for decades ive been interacted with people assuming were all on the same page, have thought things through, and that many conclusions to statements are implied, thus would be rude and patronizing to clearly call out. doing so would be treating the other like a child. i dont think im that smart, i mostly spend time with friends, peers, and family who all keep up with me
my therapist pointed out my way of processing things is actually uncommon and suggested i could seek out a spectrum diagnosis. this comment took a lot to process but it helped me remember im in the 99% given a standardized test or if we look at other, certainly flawed, education metrics. similar to a varsity athlete who never makes it past high school is in the 99% of athletes, they dont think theyre so good because theyve seen much better competition and their peers are others at their level
on top of all this i find thinking of myself as smart as disgustingly egotistical
now my point: ive found i get along much better with people i normally alienated or conflicted with if i treat them the way i refused to before my therapist called me out. i clearly describe all of the thought that went into a conclusion, something i would have considered rude and "mansplainy" 6 months ago, and others seem to treat me entirely differently. pretty much completely rehabilitated my relationship with my inlaws
college gave me a skill i often discount: the ability to collaboratively communicate knowledge in a group project setting. its so secondhand that i only noticed much later in life i honed that skill in college
the few years i was an IT manager i came to like the repeat offenders and those with chronic learned helplessness. they seemed like "regulars" and were all big personalities. often i wondered if they intentionally disabled bluetooth just to hang out for a few minutes
i like Polostan and generally recommend it. looking forward to the sequel in a few weeks. havent read anything Stevensons said about Polostan but if i had to guess id say it targets a YA audience instead of a high school/undergrad audience
amazing none of his books have been adapted. they play out like movies in my head, albeit a lot of men participating in the socratic method and waving at white boards
why i actually replied: would have been an excellent punch line if the apology post was clearly ai gen chock full of clauddish. not sure if id come back around to respecting the owner, but id laugh for sure
ive been called enough mean names by friends and strangers id much rather be called some more mean names in order to become aware of what i could do to win back some customers
my "customers always right" approach has produced much more successful and useful software compared to my perfect little hobby projects which will never be complete and noone would ever use anyway
another coworker seems to be early on a similar path but has made some comments about the former coworkers ability that makes me hopeful they dont end up the same way
feels like im talking about old high school friends on a drug path or something. its only anecdotes and i imagine the "perceived damage" is reversible. point is: i think youre onto something about the net effect and were going to have popular definitions for the negative encounters were anecdotally sharing
im a "user" but make Claude interact in an educational format and require sources on assertions. looking back, ive unintentionally cast it as The Librarian from Snow Crash, except if Hiro challenged it frequently. must have been natural after reading Snow Crash a few times. maybe im kidding myself but it feels like i havent lost a step. if im not deluding myself then i could see a world where elementary schools teach responsible llm use of to preserve cognition the same way we had to learn Google boolean search
