Re:Amsterdam to use “noise cameras” against too loud cars on Saturday August 19, 2023 @09:19AM (#37188490)
In some towns, there's an issue with ordinances and laws not being specific enough and a lack of training for measuring accurately. Someone could measure dBA and someone else could measure dBC, and the ordinance doesn't specify which measurement applies.

What's the federated version of an RSS/atom feed?

To rendezvous with the cloud, it needs a network connection first. This pop-up is meant to transmit the network password your iPhone uses so the factory reset Apple TV can establish its own network connection.
If your goal is to phase out local accounts and force microsoft.com logins as part of the computer setup, being able to trust your certificates seems like a prerequisite to being able to trust your users. And the correct time is a prerequisite to trusting your certificates.
Re:Major U.S. energy org targeted in QR code phishing attack on Wednesday August 16, 2023 @01:29PM (#37150499)
Does Squarespace or Wix provide you your own link shortener and analytics for scanned codes?

Your average restaurant owner is not likely going to pay an IT consultant extra money to operate a link shortener for them on the GoDaddy domain they bought in 2006.

I'll be curious to see the file sizes for Apple's version of 3D video capture in their Vision goggles. After one, two or three generations, I'm sure the first gen files will look small and lacking.
Does Tile work with iPad Air? It’s not listed on their support page. https://support.thetileapp.com/hc/en-us/articles/200424778-T...
“Commenters abuse thread for absurdity, additional comments follow”
Not sure there would be a decent enough return on investment, especially if the other tools they regularly use provide more reliable service at no additional cost.
He wasn’t using it for free, he was paying for Twitter Blue.
Re:Half the population to have a mental health disorder by 75 on Saturday August 05, 2023 @06:55AM (#37010825)
Can disorders develop due to prolonged exposure to toxic environments? I don’t see it as mutually exclusive.
In my opinion, the police’s complaint about how they were treated is a self-inflicted issue. A completely different person handing out diapers could have illicit the same response.
That’s not my job. That’s the job of the company that wants to keep my business.
To me it seems like Google wants the same level of control, but is sacrificing user experience and ChromeOS brand impression to achieve it.

To me, resolution of this issue looks like either letting hardware providers release their own drivers to enable them to support the sales of hardware currently on the shelves, or refuse to license ChromeOS to hardware providers unwilling to meet support standards that Google’s customers expect. Selling unsupported hardware as new seems like a recipe to drive customers away from the ChromeOS experience.

Dumb question, but aren't iPads full of non-Apple hardware too?

I can't imagine buying a brand new device and be told that it's already too old for system updates because Google and the hardware provider are choosing not to work together to provide support. Google can point the finger all they want, but this is entirely a self-inflicted issue that other system software providers seemed to have worked past.

Re:Cognitive AI for ADHD on Friday August 04, 2023 @11:05AM (#37001008)
Sounds like a co-dependence to me. There will be a day they no longer "have" her.
They should have recognized this is a serious issue for their customer and done something to address the cause of the issue.

Instead they're saying "don't change the behavior that caused you to lose the account, just open another account and cross your fingers you don't lose that one too."

We'll see if any evidence turns up in court. I think it's a good thing that Coinbase has audited statements to review and that the SEC is scrutinizing them.

If Coinbase is cooperative and absolved thanks to their diligence, they'll be further cemented as the standard for others in the industry to follow as regulators play catch up.

The way I interpreted it wasn’t “this should be expected” but that this repo isn’t actually maintained or used for legitimate purposes. It simply exists for publicity purposes.
Re:OpenAI Quietly Shuts Down Its AI Detection Tool on Tuesday July 25, 2023 @12:45PM (#36865240)
If a human can't verify whether distinguished text is actually AI or not, detection will be full of false positives and ultimately unreliable.
Re:Government URLs that don't end in .gov on Monday July 24, 2023 @11:05AM (#36849195)
Nothing out of the ordinary for individual government departments to turn to private contractors when the GSA doesn't offer them a service they need when they need it.

GSA has since developed login.gov, but there hasn't been a mandate that other agencies have to use it over third-parties.

Re:Twitter has officially changed its logo to ‘X’ on Monday July 24, 2023 @09:19AM (#36847545)
The URL is actually X.com moving forward, and tweets are to be called x's.
I’d love to see both options and a seamless transition between them. An option tuned for home use that utilizes the processing power of home devices and local networks, and an option tuned for on-the-go use utilizing the iPhone/iPad processors and mobile networks.
On the other hand, you could argue that a majority of Americans have never read the US Constitution because of how perplexing it is.
Right. NPR works for the public.
An elected official will not be satisfied with the “that’s your problem” response, because they fear those people will vote them out of office.
