Google already has the daily trip data on a huge percentage of people and could just create and recommend bus and transit routes and times based on people’s existing commutes. Sure privacy issues exist for allowing them to do this but people have given up more personal information for less benefit.

This isn’t some conspiracy, it’s about money. JPEG XL is likely patent encumbered and this including it may require paying licensing fees. The companies involved can’t admit that because if they do, they’d be willfully infringing if they do end up including it at some point…
Re:Right to Repair: The Price Is Not Right
on Monday January 22, 2024 @05:31PM (#39096463)
Another issue with this is that the part that fails often is poorly designed or not durable in the first place. So you spend money and time to replace it and then it will just fail again. Zero incentive to improve the part by the manufacturer. I think the solution is requiring manufacturers to sell warranties that cover full labor and materials or replacement. Then at least you could see if a manufacturer selling something cheaply has a very high “full warranty” price, it’s likely because it has a high failure rate. This would be the only way to incentivize fewer failures and repairs.
Re:Right to Repair: The Price Is Not Right
on Monday January 22, 2024 @05:24PM (#39096365)
I think the best way to find repairable and long lived products is to buy commercial grade when possible or look at what gets used by contractors. The types of things that get used in commercial settings or pro use tend to be a lot more repairable and durable than the consumer equivalents. Definitely more expensive though.

Re:Study: U.S. dietary recommendations for protein intake are too low
on Monday September 18, 2023 @12:43PM (#37558582)
The USDA doesn’t have a recommendation for protein (yet does for added sugar is if some is “needed”), that’s a big part of the problem.
Re:Study: U.S. dietary recommendations for protein intake are too low
on Monday September 18, 2023 @12:42PM (#37558558)
I have a pet theory that one reason people overeat is because they are unconsciously trying to get more protein. So eating tons of donuts or chips etc doesn’t satiate and they eat until they hit the requisite protein and end up consuming way more carbs and fat in the process.
Re:High-Tech Cars Might Be More Trouble Than They’re Worth
on Thursday September 14, 2023 @08:31PM (#37516662)
Things are worse when you get to the details. The cars try to stay at 20-80% charge, so off the bat you somewhat “lose” 40% of the actual full stated range. And charging takes hours, not minutes, and charging stations don’t want you to leave the car there for a long time so you then have charge anxiety that forces you to unplug and move the car after exactly say 3 or 4 hours. The whole process is a bit anxiety producing.

It’s unlikely the SEC wants to totally nuke Coinbase, given they allowed them to list on the stock exchange. Or else Investors would sue the SEC for securities fraud… probably have to put in some strong disclaimers about some of these shitcoins and pay a small fine.

I was/am like this too. I’d say one of the most fun/challenging things to do was to take something broken and try to repair it. Requires you to understand how to disassemble carefully, understand how it works, understand what is going wrong, and then either replacing or coming up with a better solution, and finally reassembly. And of course if it doesn’t work then, try again—just like debugging. Taught me basically how to be a programmer because coding is exactly the same thing. Get an unknown code base, trace through, find and isolate the problem, then try to fix.

Same experience here, though it was just regular intense exercise, not a return to exercise. Of course the doctor sort of chuckled and laughed when I theorized this as the cause of the elevated liver enzymes and said “no, exercise is good for you”.

Re:U.S. stock market returns – a history from the 1870s to 2022
on Friday January 06, 2023 @12:42PM (#34278089)
The argument that the US stock market always goes up over relatively long periods of time seems somewhat flawed to me. If it were true that it was always best to invest in US stocks, everyone’s (longish term) money would flow to that asset class, thus undervaluing something else in return. So it just seems that it can’t be a dominant strategy or else everyone would be doing it. Wouldn’t that leave assets like bonds, real estate, foreign stocks, etc undervalued?
