$9k a month is still more than I have ever dreamed of making and that's after housing and childcare?

Insane

> I don't see how you can have an independent business and be entirely dependent on third party for your operations

This isn't new though. A ton of software companies are already completely dependent on AWS or Azure or whatever.

Re:Anthropic's growth just flattened (really) on Monday November 02, 2026 @09:08PM (#50347095)
Sometime in the last 15 years we got these huge backlog wishlists of one line thoughts. People were convinced because software devs couldn't keep up translating one line thoughts into working software that the code must be the bottleneck

They never realized how much effort went into turning those one like tickets into code was, and the code was the least part of the effort

> It might very well turn out that in a few years, the only way to enjoy software development the way you like it, is to establish your own boutique software development company

That's basically already true, it happened overnight

That's why I'm so damned bitter

Wouldn't that depend on how much hardware you have to run them on, too?
Re:Never Complain, Never Explain on Monday November 02, 2026 @10:28AM (#50338164)
Sure, but like all skills different people will have different aptitude and ability to actually learn and adapt it

That doesn't mean I don't try, but I'm just aware that certain things get under my skin and set me from 0 to 100 faster than I can take a deep breath and keep my cool

Re:Never Complain, Never Explain on Monday November 02, 2026 @10:25AM (#50338118)
Yeah, that's why I say it's a privilege. It's not something everyone or even many people get
Re:Never Complain, Never Explain on Monday November 02, 2026 @09:57AM (#50337683)
I wish I had this sort of temperament

Cognitively I know it's better to just focus on the future and what I'm doing but I really struggle to walk by stuff without engaging. It's a flaw I'm aware of and am trying to work on, but it feels impossible to get where I want to be

It does not help that I am nearing 40 and the past "things I am hoping for" have never really worked out how I wanted. I think it becomes harder and harder to hope when your hopes have been squashed frequently in your life

It's a real privilege to have a life where things actually work out close to how you want them. Hard work alone does not get you there

Re:Nine killed as small jet crashes on Florida street on Monday November 02, 2026 @09:53AM (#50337627)
Flying is such an interesting thing to me. I'm still frightened every time I get in a plane

Unequivocally the safest way to travel, statistically, but when things go this wrong it is more or less impossible for anyone on board to survive. I'm just thankful it didn't hit a building or anything

I couldn't bring myself to listen to the audio

Sure

None of that is worth boiling the oceans to me.

> What AI will allow these software engineers to do, is bypass their employers and serve customer niches directly, capturing more of the revenue themselves.

It's going to enable me to do less software development and more marketing? Goodie, I'm so happy I could puke.

Test Driven Development I guess?
What you are saying is that your best arguments will fall flat compared to the pain it is causing, which kind of suggests to me that it is in fact causing more pain than good.
How would the average person benefit exactly?

How does an AI data center make my life or my family's lives better?

I feel quite strongly that AI is making my life worse right now, so I'm interested to hear how you would convince me that a data center near me would be good for me even as I'm unemployed due to AI.

Computer Science is the study of computing

Building software is just one application of computer science

It's a bit like the difference between someone who is a psychologist helping people in therapy, and a psychologist who studies psychology in a lab. They require similar educations but they are very different professions

Re:Computer Science Programs Lose Students as AI Replaces Jobs on Saturday October 31, 2026 @08:49PM (#50321736)
This is true. I loved my time doing Compsci in university and I feel I was probably more suited to doing that for career, but software jobs were plentiful and I still don't know where I would find a computer science job aside from a university
They're literally describing how it's not actually a block just a minor inconvenience

A block would be a bit harder to circumvent

Claude's taking my job as an internet peanut gallery now too?
Re:We Won't "Just Hang Out" on Saturday October 31, 2026 @01:50PM (#50318302)
I mean.. yeah, I know this is hacker news and there are some very wealthy people here, but I suspect the majority of users here could not possibly retire tomorrow if they wanted to

Or maybe I'm an outlier for being solidly working class, idk

> There is no useful point to "accountable" other than "make it stop happening".

Of course there is. It's to make the responsible parties pay reparations as well.

No, you have to pay a subscription for a car :)
Re:Malware uses LLMs to rank victims by how much they're worth on Saturday October 31, 2026 @12:50PM (#50317789)
Will this even matter though? As long as these computers are on the same network, AI tools will find a way to get from one to the other if any of them are compromised
Re:AI Isn't Replacing SREs. It's Deskilling Them on Saturday October 31, 2026 @10:26AM (#50316509)
People are going to miss it if it means they start missing paycheques and get barred out of the job market. :/
Re:AI Isn't Replacing SREs. It's Deskilling Them on Friday October 30, 2026 @10:56PM (#50312799)
This is always a good example

People cannot deny that cars have made our physical bodies atrophy. Not all of us, maybe, but many people are way worse off physically than they would have been without cars

There's an analogy in there but I can't think of it. Maybe I'll ask Claude if it can explain it

I agree strongly with you but the ship has sailed, it's much too late to stop:/

I'd like to see the companies (and individuals inside them) held accountable for this though.

You don't have to believe in souls and gods to think humans have qualities that cannot be encoded in silicon

> Technology is this one-way ratcheting mechanism which will crush everything dignified within its trajectory. I'm attached to the idea that only the way out of this is up and out. That the solution is to escape into something(?) hyperreal that confounds the assumptions of our unescapable problem

This is a bizarre thought for me to entertain. I understand the idea of "up and out" but I don't think the next rung to escape technology can be built with technology then. That would not be "out", it would be trapped more than ever before

Re:LLM Voice on Thursday October 29, 2026 @09:14PM (#50298683)
Or just short term gains versus long term pains (or vice versa, depending on how you view it)

I feel like in my life all I ever see is people mortgaging the future for today though. Hey how about that record storm in California?

Re:We Won't "Just Hang Out" on Thursday October 29, 2026 @05:20PM (#50296181)
> In many respects, many of us already have superabundance, in that our basic physical needs are taken care of.

They might be right now, but for most of us they aren't next month. Or next year. Or for the years after retirement

"We convince ourselves it's not enough" completely misses the fact that for most of us it isn't, past the very short term!

I worked at a company for a while trying to make a battery control device that predicts the peak daily demand and discharges the battery to offset it.

It's kind of crazy how much money you can save by shrinking your peak demand during the time of day it's most expensive.
