I suppose the implication is that you cannot presume human care with evidence of LLM use, it's considerably more likely that it's an indicator of lack of care, unfortunately.

It's like saying "but a lot of human care goes into factory made X" when comparing it to handmade X. It starts on a lesser footing unless evidence suggests otherwise

Neurogenesis slows for a similar reason

4% of my disk on a computer with soldered storage hardware?

Is the marketing really getting this good?

If the safeguards are this bad, yet they hire the best in the world, the only explanation is that it's deliberately and carefully engineered to happen

Re:SparrowMap – Cameras that watch government vehicles on Friday August 14, 2026 @12:17AM (#49294709)
I think the presumption of harassment is a little telling, but if your post was in good faith, merely advertising people's cars (as in the group pays for ad space etc) freely and legally very much like the musk plane tracking app would have the desired effect
Re:ChatGPT Desktop (Codex Desktop) for Linux on Thursday August 13, 2026 @08:16AM (#49284814)
Why would I use this over browser version or CLI

If you think Microsoft is generous, you are extremely naive. LLMs and their produced content are less interesting to MS because they don't present original human data for training.
Ublock Origin's creators are absolute god-kings for their consistent work to help me (for free) not be forced to engage in psychological conditioning all day via my eyeballs. I never used to have an issue with ads, but because of capitalism, they simply cannot exist without cancerously taking over everything. They start as a banner, then before you know it, you have full screen unskippable paywalls to the content, with extreme discomfort placed on the user with deliberately engaging bright colours and sudden sounds played without my consent. Sure, if I like the product such as facebook as a free platform I might consider a premium licence for some conveniences, but adverts are simply the direct representation of societal rot for profit. I paid for netflix, then eventually they started showing me ads on netflix. It never ever stops.
Re:Your key to success isn't more luck or hard work on Wednesday August 12, 2026 @04:13PM (#49277953)
Peterson before he went nuts covered the research on this quite bluntly:

Lifetime earnings is most strongly predicted by IQ, then conscientiousness. So those with both are considerably more likely. Social connectedness is entirely dependent on personality as well - extraversion predicts this, and extraversion also predicts ones interest in financial incentives rather curiously

Re:LinkedIn CringeBot 3000 on Wednesday August 12, 2026 @06:17AM (#49270115)
Linkedin used to be good(ish).

It's offering was: "Talking about my CV/resume and engaging with potential employers have to be so stiff, corpo and outdated. Why can't it be more casual and easy to do like a Facebook Bio but still usable? Also, business cards suck and get lost. Another thing, working in <insert industry> is demanding and going to networking events is awkward and too full on. I wish I could maintain connections and have occasional conversations with people and actually remember who they are"

This worked for a while. In 2012 to 2015 getting jobs entirely via recruiters and conversational interactions on LinkedIn often led to interviews and other things. Then they started needing to make money, so adverts became a thing, the premium became a thing, then marketing departments caught up and started aggressively promoting crap, then later influencers arrived, and now AI. It's a death by 1000 cuts, it's fundamentally made out of low-stakes dishonestly from people just trying to keep their career going. But the end state is that it's probably the most dishonest social media platform to date. When you have Instagram and Facebook to compare it to, that's quite an achievement.

It's almost like a claudeism

Re:$100 AI Music Video: Claude Fable 5 vs. GPT-5.6 Sol on Friday July 17, 2026 @04:12AM (#48944587)
Music videos aren't absurd and meaningless, as in many instances they are of fantastic artistic merit on their own accord and are simply scored in reverse
This is superseded/proven by basic psychometrics it seems? Big Five Extraversion is roughly equivalent to "social dominance", how well an individual implements themselves in a social setting. "Extroverts" or people high in the trait are of course more likely to see progression on the basis they are superior at presenting value in a social setting in terms of social ability, which is often (falsely) accepted as a proxy for overall competence. This is why they end up running orgs as well
Re:OpenWrt One – Open Hardware Router on Monday July 06, 2026 @08:05PM (#48812093)
Because a shocking amount of consumers buy things based purely on how they appear and the gamer adjacent aesthetic looks surprising and advanced to consumers. Unassuming business boxes are much harder to sell via the visual marketing
Re:Europe's new climate in seven charts on Sunday July 05, 2026 @07:52AM (#48793446)
It's a good question, in terms of progression of climate change
I'm not sure I get your arguement here

Are you saying that we should let children smoke and just tax it because its better for their liberty and freedoms?

Or are you saying we should just tax social media for adults but banning it for kids is ok

Re:Open Source Low Tech on Tuesday June 30, 2026 @03:57AM (#48729726)
I had never really considered the _competence_ of help before. It makes a huge amount of sense and is a strong argument for intelligent younger folk looking for a meaningful career. Instead of engineering for the pocket lining of your chosen billionaire, why not use those incredible skills to use in frugal or humanitarian engineering
This is not true outside of the United States
Re:OpenRA on Saturday June 27, 2026 @03:48PM (#48701118)
I heard that the Red Alert 2 source code is officially (while unannounced) lost, which is why there has been no remaster. Is this true?
Re:US Govt to individually approve who gets GPT 5.6 on Friday June 26, 2026 @07:26PM (#48693341)
This is hopelessly naive. The only thing that has changed people's opinions, is their own personal bottom line. No more, no less.
This was a really informative and interesting reply articulated in simple enough terms that I am now interested in GPUs, thanks

I had never heard of NextDoor until I read this post. UK based. I just spent 20 minutes reading Wikipedia and associated articles. They are really old too... Wow
