No they dont approach men more then they do anywhere else.
Re:How Singapore's government-run dating service works on Friday October 02, 2026 @05:40AM (#49931625)
I dont see how a goverment-run dating service would solve the issue that social-media had made hypergamy run on steroids and that people today have much higher demands on their partner than ever before.

In sweden we have one semi popular dating site with minimal amount of matching algoritms and swiping and such and its no easier there to find a partner than on tinder.

Re:You Are No Longer Invited to Dinner on Friday October 02, 2026 @05:36AM (#49931601)
It is not about money it about that you start to feel like they take you for granted when every time we did plan a party or dinner, me hosting it was always the best or only option according to the group. If it was a few times then it would not be an issue but systematically it always being me hosting takes the fun away.

I now have an other friend group and I have gotten tired with cooking for a x-amount of people.

Re:You Are No Longer Invited to Dinner on Friday October 02, 2026 @05:29AM (#49931559)
Being the only one hosting without asking for money.
Re:You Are No Longer Invited to Dinner on Tuesday September 29, 2026 @08:22AM (#49891984)
Another challenge to hosting dinner parites today is that everybody is on a special diet, count calories, on ozempic because they need to be healthier or have a athletic goal only few people 30 years ago had.

This makes it even more difficult to host because of everybody's needs and regimes they dont buckle on.

Re:You Are No Longer Invited to Dinner on Tuesday September 29, 2026 @08:14AM (#49891885)
Swede here, I used to host a lot of dinners and parties.

But then i realized that it was mostly me who hosted them and the few times i got invited there was an agreement that guest chip in on the costs or that it was a potluck kind of thing.

Made me regret spending all that time and money on the parties i hosted.

we will see a rise of bootleg socialmedia plattforms hosted under the radar.

He means utilizing GTK. In sweden its common to say "Utveckla mot xxx" Develop against, when talking about using a framework or library. I bet they say the same thing i Other germanic languages.
Re:What Is New in MySQL 8.2 on Friday November 10, 2023 @10:39AM (#38220178)
Whats the bennefits of using mysql today when mariadb exists.
>the vast majority of people who discontinue, even after long term use, regain 100% or more of the weight they lost

Thats true for all weight loss. With or without drugs. Only surgery has a bit better stats on long term weightloss.

Re:Cancer cases in young adults rise by 80% globally on Monday September 11, 2023 @07:52AM (#37465877)
I personally beleive that weight gain among young adults are one big contributing factor.

In the future we will look at obesity the same as smoking today.

If windows is certified to run the US military its secure and stable.
>How does it compare to the mysql one or MS sql server management studio for that matter?

It dosent compare, but then when working with php and mariadb you dont often use the advanced/esoteric features you have in SQLserver

>Wamp installer is windows specific but i'd assume you browse to find the download for it, etc or use winget or chocolately instead of sudo install xyz, etc so i fail to see the advantage there?

Well there is less configuring with wamp and there are gui tools to manage things, installing the services in linux and setting them up is always a bit more work. I have never tried xampp in linux so it might be equal there.

>There's a reason people jokingly call it microsoft java. The second half might be mischaracterizing it on many fronts but the first half is true to form. I'd argue it as an argument in this matter is similar to bringing up the best platform for developing with Swift.

It being an complete integrated package from the OS to the IDE is the best feature about dotNet. You can look at it the same way as "the lisp machine" but with better third party software support. I guess swift has the same benefits, altho when i tried it the tools where not really up to the same standards as visual studio.

I have yet came across a language platform i cant develop with ease on windows. Also these days with tech such as docker etc there really are no boundaries.

With php its very little difference except that you run Windows and get all the benefints from that regarding drivers and software support, i have yet found an equaly good database manager on linux as heidiSQL(it is unstable in wine) for ex. Also it "feels" easier to click on the wamp installer and just run it from there compared to sudo apt install xyz.

With C# the difference is huge since you just need to install visual studio and you have everything you will need, with the best tooling there is.

In my view Windows has always been a great development system. Been doing both php and c# development on windows for years and it always been "start computer, install wamp/editor or visual studio" then you are set and can develop great software.
I really dont see how soybean oil in by itself causes obesity as is stated in the article. If you don exceed your daily caloric intace then you wont gain weight no matter what kind of oil you eat.

Re:The ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 10 as a Linux Laptop on Wednesday March 29, 2023 @07:15AM (#35355493)
I have a thinkpad X1 bought in 2019(idk which gen) its horrible as a linux laptop, mainly because of the scaling issues. But also the touchpad is not good. Its quite bad in windows but even worse in linux. The battery get empty much faster in linux as well.

Another annoying thing about it that has nothing to do with the os is that the trackpoint randomly makes the pointer "drift" and theres nothing you can do when that happens except to wait for it to stop. It seems to be sort of a common thing on thinkpads and i have gotten lenovo to replace my trackpoint and its still an issue.

My next laptop will be a dell or something.

There are plenty of chanses to make generational whealth for the middle class in europe. Especially in the nordic countires.
Just php and mariadb. Nothing too facy.

Re:Ask HN: What's on your home server? on Saturday January 07, 2023 @12:24PM (#34290267)
Do you really use all of that computing power for the stuff that is running on the server. All of the home lab setups i have seen have been way over powered and under used. Lots of "wasted" computing power to just be powered on and never really utilized.
Re:Ask HN: What's on your home server? on Friday January 06, 2023 @10:23AM (#34275633)
The real need of any home server has really dissapeard now when there are cheap services for everything and all of them do it better than any setup am willing to dedicate my time on. If you really want something just buy a cheap NAS and it will run everything you want with minimal setup.

Unless you want to learn how to setup a server ie "home lab", but then its more cheaper and more efficient to rent a cheap vm on linode.

The era where you had an old computer from your office in a closet to host your website, music, email, and such is long gone.

Most people born with family whealth waste the money and loose it in a few generations. Very few manage to turn their resources into facebook, tesla or amazon.

Is this the reason why american houses "feel" cheaper or less sturdy compared to houses in my home country of sweden.

It was one of the stranges feelings i had when i visited usa that the houses felt like toy houses or something.

Re:The Child Is the Teacher: A Life of Maria Montessori on Sunday December 11, 2022 @06:59AM (#33942450)
1. I have no idea sadly.

2. I have a guess that i would perform a bit better in a regular and more disciplined school, since i did much better when i moved to "gymnasiet"(late highschool). This school had a much more traditional way of teaching.

3. When i was 16 i moved on to gymnasiet(later highschool) and did okay there. After that i tried to get into university but i did not have good enough grades to get accepted. So i went to a diploma school, much like a coding boot-camp, which i dropped out of to start my company which is what i do now.

Re:The Child Is the Teacher: A Life of Maria Montessori on Friday December 09, 2022 @10:39AM (#33922455)
I went to a Montessori school during my childhood.

It really was the worst option for a kid like me. They let my ADD run loose and there was no real organization or dicipline at all. I remember i could spend weeks just walking around in the school and do "montissori tasks" every now and then. For regular school work they asked me every other week what i wanted to learn and let me write it down in a schedule and expected me to just learn it on my own and if i needed help i could ask a teacher for help. This led me to do the absolute minimum or pretty much nothing.

I was so behind on everything in school that i had to repeat school years several times and then before finishing cram everything i was behind on during the last year in a separate summer school.

For the kids with natural dicipline and organization it was really benefitial. But for a kid like me that needed to learn dicipline and organization it was truly the worst.

My parents insisted on keeping me there because they really beleived in the montissori way and thought i would do worse in a traditional school.
