western arrogance is truly astounding. somehow people who consume 0 chinese media and cant speak a lick of the language somehow are intricately aware of not only chinese media, but chinese society.

but of course. the benchmark is minor influencer and HN darling naomi wu.

Re:The United States withdraws from UNESCO on Tuesday July 22, 2025 @04:49PM (#44652826)
1. it is highly relevant outside the western bubble, 2. their domestic market is large enough that china does not have to whore itself out to the west like korea or japan, 3. you gloss over the deliberate suppression by the US regime. japan was not "culturally relevant" in the US before the late 80s when they bent the knee
> but your statement about China is straight from a CCP propaganda handbook.

and? the Chinese people live and believe it. propaganda can be true, and governments can in fact live up to their statements. ofc with westerners' pathological mistrust of authority, as well as their penchant to pick the worst possible leaders, we will never come to any agreement about this.

also, are we seriously still unironically typing "guanxi" in this day and age? social capital is hardly something to be exoticized. keep the orientalist rhetoric where it belongs please.

..did you only learn chinese academically or something? anyone in china would think of Mao if you said 小红书 (well, at least before the app)
in what sense could you _possibly_ argue this

from both legal and realpolitik lenses the Taiwan issue is fully legitimate. your country has done far worse to Cuba for far less. Even setting aside the historical context and the Chinese civil war, what is illegitimate about not wanting an antagonistic and belligerent foreign power installing weapons in an island mere miles off the mainland coast?

and that has what, exactly, to do with the legitimacy of said grievances?
no serious fan of the sport would agree. not even truls would consider him to be the 2nd best in the world. but yes, he did have an amazing run to the silver
Re:U.S. math scores drop on major international test on Tuesday December 10, 2024 @07:57PM (#42383538)
How insightful could this possibly be if socioeconomic variables are not controlled for? Clearly the socioeconomic makeup of "US Asians" is not the same as, say, the entire population of Korean students.

Also, "US Asians" is a silly grouping..

Re:U.S. math scores drop on major international test on Tuesday December 10, 2024 @07:46PM (#42383444)
Your first paragraph is 10, 20 years out of date. And you conflate the prestige & economic power of the US with its education quality. As your example exemplifies, those coming here for school are coming for economic reasons (an increasingly less compelling draw, by the way), not because they think the education here is special.
Re:One-Way Traffic on Wednesday September 11, 2024 @08:35PM (#41516555)
The West controlled India to a degree that was thankfully not the case in China. This is basic history that the OP literally referenced

Nobody is fooled. Have the courtesy to say what you mean instead of insinuating disgusting aspersions

Re:Biden hikes US tariffs on of Chinese imports on Tuesday May 14, 2024 @03:00PM (#40358792)
when others get to dictate the terms to the US for once - "coercive, illegal"

what a fun euphemism for "something that doesn't enforce US economic hegemony". you just can't help yourselves using this morally-coded language. it's geopolitical competition and you benefit personally from supporting the US - enough with the grandstanding

Re:How did Ancient Greek music sound? on Thursday May 02, 2024 @02:43PM (#40239947)
this is quite hyperbolic. he has too complicated a legacy to dismiss this easily. some of the concepts he pioneered include talk therapy, transference, significance of early childhood on psychological development, the influence of the unconscious on behavior - all of which we accept today
Re:China's Moon atlas is the most detailed ever made on Monday April 29, 2024 @02:47PM (#40202320)
yes, there is a widespread awareness that this is all realpolitik. in the western public, everything is a moral struggle between good and evil, where the west is the good guy de facto

to add on to this - far more chinese people visit the west than the other way around. many study english. there is significantly greater understanding of their counterpart's systems in china than in the US or europe. the US has trouble recruiting people who are even literate in mandarin, FFS, to say nothing about familiarity with the culture (even more incredibly, nobody questions reporting or analysis on china produced by these illiterate people!)

Re:China's Moon atlas is the most detailed ever made on Monday April 29, 2024 @02:24PM (#40202039)
in the major cities at least, there is significantly growing awareness atp that domestic infrastructure, technology, etc. is simply better than in the west. people meme about western cities as being comparable to villages

however

1. they certainly do recognize areas where they are "behind". more interesting than technologies (ex. space, hn's new pet topic in semiconductors eyeroll, etc.) are things like recognizing mental health concerns and better working conditions

2. there are obviously still millions upon millions of people not in the major cities, for whom life has improved but clearly hasn't reached western standards

i dont think the spirit of what youre saying is wrong, but the inferiority complex youre implying is fading fast

gee what a mystery. how about no more bloodshed for starters.
yes of course, the enlightened Americans are so much better at handling crime. pointing at western justice systems to say that western values are superior - this must be satire?
this must be comedy? you think the chinese economy is down 50%? at no point did you question how unfathomably ridiculous such a figure is?

i suppose this is the state of the west now, where literally anything negative about russia or china is accepted without question?

Re:We should all be reading more Ursula Le Guin on Thursday April 04, 2024 @04:14PM (#39935266)
an amusing fantasy. I'd love to see your western biases shatter when you do just that. do you think it's at all hard to find a 70yr old Chinese person?

Re:SQL for data scientists in 100 queries on Tuesday February 06, 2024 @07:12PM (#39282803)
so why exactly did you skip the first sentence of the paragraph so that you could make a self-evident point?

anyway that 5% hires a disproportionately larger # of "data scientists"

Re:SQL for data scientists in 100 queries on Tuesday February 06, 2024 @06:48PM (#39282577)
i think you may be overestimating the avg. past data scientist's software engineering chops, but it's definitely true that the term has become more diluted than ever

you still find these kinds of people and roles at smaller companies but at largecorps, what's the point? the interesting modelbuilding you shunt off to your army of phd-holding research scientists. deploying models and managing infra goes to MLE. what's left is the data analyst stuff, which you repackage as "data science" because cmon, "analytics"? are we dinosaurs? this is modern tech, we have an image to uphold!

there's not really a need for, or supply of, people who can do everything (edit: _at largecorps_, obviously)

then admit that instead of fearmongering and promoting actively harmful sinophobic views. it's the blind and naive i am taking issue with, not the geopolitical realists. even if i disagree with both
for the price of a music streaming service, you get a music streaming service _and_ ad-free video. it's a fine deal even if YT music is not as good as alternatives. and you're putting your money where your mouth is regarding ads and internet monetization.
oh please, spare us. Do tell what china has done to the US citizenry. Consider that you're attempting revolutions, surrounding them with military bases, arming separatists, and instigating trade wars. Your government hates the Chinese people. Don't project your vile tendencies onto others.
if you're actually interested in reality, that it's not controversial to a western crowd predisposed to sinophobic sentiment is precisely what should be setting alarms off
Re:The Failed Saint: On George Orwell's India on Thursday January 25, 2024 @02:24PM (#39133863)
scale matters. i expect that to be obvious in a place like HN

there _is_ an interesting discussion to be had about how far behind india is vs. china, but the average westerner refuses to entertain the obvious conclusion to be drawn there.

well this time it's the enemy du jour, China. you're not talking to a crowd that ever cared about the Hugo awards before this.
Re:What happened to the US machine tool industry? on Thursday January 18, 2024 @07:31PM (#39050031)
It appears the western public's understanding of geopolitical realities is always a decade behind. _Right now_, all of NATO combined can't even outproduce Russia alone. We don't need to be talking hypotheticals, it is literally happening in real time.

plus if a conflict like that occurs then clearly the US has lost significant power. so why would it be a given that American neo-colonies stay on its side?
