News for hackers. Stuff that matters.

blactuary

And top of actual tax cuts they also basically stopped tax enforcement on the rich and gutted the IRS

Pedantic nonsense on top of denialism, great job. You know damn well I am talking about the impact on humans and not actual destruction of the planet itself.

I am not making anything more difficult for anyone, this type of defense of your precious AI is though. You should personally go tell the kids in Memphis that are breathing the air from Elon's generators about the percentage of global electricity AI uses

> especially when they think that would make the world significantly worse.

They are wrong, and they must be stopped. We are close to the point of no return on doing irreversible damage to the planet, I do not care if people like the jangly Claude keys

Re:Just say no to OpenAI and Anthropic on Monday October 12, 2026 @08:52PM (#50065162)
This is an unbelievably troubling worldview and I hope not many other people are thinking this way
Re:Just say no to OpenAI and Anthropic on Monday October 12, 2026 @08:47PM (#50065128)
We are way past that point. We've lapped it a couple times
This is all incremental use. What have we gained? How many kids in Memphis should get asthma so you can code a little faster?
Where did I say it was a problem? Using chatgpt to plan an itinerary sounds terrible TO ME
Is it ready to provide power? No? Then I don't care what they are trying to do while they are burning a bunch of fossil fuels in the meantime
Just a few more weeks, a few more hundreds of billions, it's right around the corner....
"Startup"

Wait until you have clean energy sources and shut it down

That sounds terrible. I like to live like a human being
A great deal of the supposed smartest people have fully sided with fascism, it's not about smarts

>In any case, what really matters is that the true inner sanctum of human creativity hasn’t been breached and probably never will be, and also, that Sam Altman and Dario Amodei are contemptible little nerds.

>If you’re still a proponent of that doomed worldview, still aboard the sinking ship, I encourage you in the strongest possible terms to read yesterday’s other great contribution to AI discourse, besides the OpenAI Mathocalypse dump: namely, Scott Alexander’s open letter to Steven Pinker. I feel some responsibility for this, as the person who first introduced Steven Pinker to the existence of the rationalist community, and who also first introduced Steven Pinker and Scott Alexander to one another (they had both been fans of each other’s writing).

Whole lotta yikes

Kind of funny to mention comma today of all days

And poisoning Memphis. So disappointing that no one has principles anymore
Completely irrelevant short-term thinking that is the exact wrong way to think about retirement savings
This is absolute nonsense. He is explicitly saying he does not feel threatened by it because he is confident in his own coding skills, and that he does not tie his identity to his work, and you are just making things up saying he actually believes the opposite.

Like I said, bad faith trolling

The dotcom burst wasn't concentrated in a a couple of well-connected companies. The better comparison is the financial crisis, and yes, they did bail them out.

No, it is not getting too smart. Moving too fast means exactly the opposite, they are doing idiotic and destructive things because the models are not as smart as they want us to think

It's clear from reading your posts in this thread you are just trolling and not trying to have good faith discussion

2022-26 is irrelevant for people's retirement savings. They are not or should not be even paying attention to that short-term movement. If the bubble bursts there will be collateral damage that impacts way more than just AI or AI-adjacent companies, and that could have long-term consequences
They do not have a choice of whether to buy in if they are doing the sound strategy of index funds through their 401k, funds which are now inflated by the bubble
You're just trolling. Nothing he said aligns with your reasons
They are getting too big and too cozy with federal govt, making a bailout more likely

They are moving too fast and using too much dirty energy

They are committing crimes to trick people into thinking they've created god

None of your three theories are correct at all

We are building more dirty fossil fuel energy to keep up with AI demands. When the solar build out is further along, and the grid is updated, it will be more acceptable to be using so much energy. Spinning up a bunch of new gas powered plants because they want to move too fast is terrible
Re:CSS-Tricks in Limbo on Friday September 18, 2026 @08:45AM (#49753636)
You keep saying things that are blatantly false. Immigrants commit fewer crimes. There is no legal process that will allow the vast majority of immigrants to migrate legally.

There is absolutely no merit based argument against the immigrants who are here or trying to come here. It's completely about race no matter how hard you try to deny it. No one is buying this nonsense.

Re:CSS-Tricks in Limbo on Thursday September 17, 2026 @09:38PM (#49749225)
"He's not talking about all immigrants, just the brown ones"

Dig up man

What is never totally clear with a lot of these releases is the scope of what it's good at. Models that can run with good speed on affordable consumer hardware for coding only is the dream. I am never going to use this for writing, images, or "general knowledge". Coding only

Happy to be of service
Re:Sex, AI, and the Apocalypse on Thursday September 17, 2026 @06:45PM (#49747715)
I have great news then, that absolutely isn't going to happen. And the EA crowd deserves all of the potshots and more
Re:CSS-Tricks in Limbo on Thursday September 17, 2026 @09:47AM (#49740699)
They absolutely are skilled workers, more skilled than you for sure. And they contribute a great deal to the country while not getting the benefits of being citizens, they pay way more taxes than the limited services they use.

And there is no ladder to climb, it is nearly impossible to migrate legally and gain citizenship. One of the many big lies of xenophobic, racist, anti-immigration people is "they should do it the right way, come legally" when for the overwhelming majority of people it simply isn't possible, and the current admin is making it even harder, motivated purely by racism.

Another one of the big lies, one that you are doing here, is wildly overstating the extent to which they "enjoy the benefits". Mexican immigrants are not eligible for most of the services provided to citizens.

Every attempt at quantifying the impact of Mexican immigration to the US is overwhelmingly positive to the country. You have nothing to stand on but racism.
