Re:The entire city of San Francisco as a video game on Tuesday August 25, 2026 @08:51AM (#49433159)
Yeah, you're right, but also, fuck the ToS of any big company these days.
I mean, of course you're right about all of that. (The Qatar world cup was more for 'sportswashing' than extracting profit, although FIFA itself still made plenty of money. And, the hydration breaks will hopefully be a thing of a the past, because it was so obvious what they were really for. But I'm not betting on that.)

It just sucks that everything good and sacred in the world (soccer and everything else) is being squeezed and shittified for profit. So if FIFA is prevented from converting from a non-profit with the nominal purpose of being a steward of the game for its own stake into a fully explicit for-profit capitalistic enterprise, then I'll take the victory. Even if the current system is far from perfect.

The super league wasn't UEFA's doing at all. The top clubs themselves tried to break away and self-organize, and they ultimately won some concessions from UEFA (new CL format, more CL money to the big teams)
So what. The point of the World Cup is a worldwide celebration of soccer, interchange of culture. It belongs to the people.

It's one of the only things left whose purpose is not just to make as much money as possible.

Yeah that diagram is all over the place. The arrows on the left branching from the outline of the diagram itself?

I think they meant 'end' as in the 'ultimate destination' rather than 'conclusion'.
Re:I spent five years building a webapp and got my first $1 (2022) on Wednesday February 05, 2025 @10:44AM (#42950143)
There's still the big cost of time spent working on it without making money from having a job.
Re:Amazon tells employees to return to office five days a week on Monday September 16, 2024 @11:31PM (#41563825)
I read it as the privilege of being able to choose a lower paying job (that lets you sleep better at night, be more fulfilled, etc)
Re:Cruise ships chopped in half are a license to print money on Sunday September 08, 2024 @05:39PM (#41483454)
I don't see it.

What are the consequences of, for example, staring at the live flight map and only the live flight map for a 7 hour flight [1]? Sounds boring as hell but you're not going to like bore yourself insane

IMO it is a complete bastardization of the phrase.

The genz/alpha version is a noble form of asceticism, while the 'original' meaning is more a hedonistic indulgence without regard for consequences to yourself or others.

Ha! I have it too. Doesn't feel like 20% but we're out here
Awesome! I someday hope to find the time to make something like this for soccer - individual skill drills as well as gameplay analysis.

Care to share any technical details about how your analysis pipeline works? :)

Am I missing it or is the source code not available?

> I personally regularly use the “voice” version of chatGPT to brainstorm with it while I walk my dog. We sped past the Turing test so fast that no one even beat an eyelash about it

I don't think that just because the author has a pseudo-conversation with ChatGPT using voice as the interface means we've passed the Turing test.

They don't seem to be actively interrogating ChatGPT to determine whether it's a human or not - something that I'd expect would still be quite easy to do. And, as I understand it, the Turing test could be administered over text.

I mean, fox news seems to manage doing exactly that just fine without ChatGPT

I'm sure the origins of CUDA are very interesting in their own right, and it cannot be denied that the evolution of the GPU and GPU programming has had a huge impact on the growth of the field.. but, without the specific work of these specific people, at worst I think we'd only be a tiny bit behind where we are now.

The AI craze we have today is built on the continuous, sustained work of a huge amount of people over years and years.

I enjoyed the Machineries of Empire trilogy by Yoon Ha Lee.

It also is labelled a space opera and has a decent amount of naval warfare in space

Sort of related, here are a couple rap songs that I like which self-impose similar constraints:

Blackalicious - Alphabet Aerobics https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xxmmGToZlns

Nach - Efectos Vocales https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eOTbm-NvLII

I'm learning this stuff because I think it's fascinating.

To be fair I know I'm light years behind the cutting-edge so I feel I can sleep assured that I won't take too much of the blame for having created our new AI overlords, or taking the jobs, etc.

Also, generative art and LLMs are undoubtedly impressive, but not completely my cup of tea. But you can always take your ML knowledge and find a domain/problem you care about to apply it to. It's not like literally everything will be solved in the future.

I think you meant to say 'product', not 'customers'

Re:Infinite Stable Diffusion Videos on Tuesday September 06, 2022 @08:42PM (#32745031)
As an aside, it would be cool if music could also be an input to these kinds of generative models, such that the generated image somehow matches the feeling or mood of the music.
Re:The end of the manual transmission is near? on Wednesday August 24, 2022 @08:42PM (#32587859)
I hope that someday there will be an option for an electric car with a manual transmission. Regardless of how small the market would be and how little practical sense it would make
Ha! The soldier in white from catch-22
That reminds me of a thread here from a few weeks ago about how somebody was training an ML model to add noise to video, so that the noise-free version of the video can be compressed better but then the noise can be added at playback to maintain the authentic feel of old video.

Re:How CUDA Programming Works on Tuesday July 05, 2022 @01:45AM (#31984749)
I think CUDA even lets you allocate pinned host memory too now - cuHostMalloc or something like that - so you can skip the double-copy
