Can you explain why? I have pretended to be multiple kinds of Christian with success despite being none of them.
I think it’s an argument against paying attention to anything Salesforce publishes, regardless of what they claim.

I keep it in a secure separate location in case my house catches on fire.
My enjoyment of things is somewhat diminished by knowing that the thing engages in a vast conspiracy to commit and conceal abuse worldwide.
This reads like an LLM wrote it.

You have a mobile phone plan from which you can’t send SMS?

Late Acceptance Hill Climbing (and diversified) are algorithms in this field that came out after this paper was originally written and I wonder how it compares (maybe the author is around and can comment?)

Apollo private equity buys a respected but financially struggling baby food company and starts putting asbestos in it to cut costs. After kids start getting sick, nobody really feels better that asbestos was listed on the label and that the free market is going to correct it.

The only creator I’m aware of on gumroad is humorous avowed racist and antisemite turned sketchy advice guy Sam Hyde.

In the past I would have agreed with this statement, but nowadays I would assume an organization's actions are their policy until they state and act otherwise.
Unless you are doing bidirectional streaming (for which it seems pretty well suited, but I haven't used it, so it might be a fucking mess), grpc is usually a waste of time. Runtime transitive dependency hell, toolchain hell, and the teams inside Google that manage various implementations philosophically disagree on how basic features should work. Try exposing a grpc api to a team that doesn't use your language (particularly if they're using a language that isn't go, python or java, or is an old version of those.) Try exposing a grpc api to integrate with a cots product. Try exposing a grpc api to a browser. All will require a middleware layer.

Also the quality of vscode is strictly worse. I tried it a few years ago and syntax highlighting a basic python program using stock vscode would get stuck (highlighting the wrong characters in random colors) in nondeterministic ways. I tried it again recently and I still see syntax highlighting bugs. Vim does a better job.
Re:I Automated My Job Application Process on Sunday December 29, 2024 @12:15AM (#42537731)
I discovered a new tactic where you ask a vaguely worded question on a niche subject, such that any seemingly off the cuff comprehensive answer must be ChatGPT. Asking something outside the candidate’s declared experience or following up on experience with tech they spoke well to will also reveal discrepancies.
Re:Casual Viewing – Why Netflix looks like that on Saturday December 28, 2024 @09:26AM (#42531248)
I sort of unironically agree with this. Time is limited and most tv and films don’t fit my criteria for “worth watching”, so I will read the plot synopsis for media that I think may be terrible, so I don’t have to find out later.
Re:Should More of Us Be Moving to Live Near Friends? on Saturday December 28, 2024 @01:47AM (#42529121)
I live very close to a couple dozen of my favourite people. I’d like to move out of the shithole state I live in, and began seriously planning it until I realised that it would never be worth trading the proximity.
Re:Bryan Johnson – The Most Expensive Eating Disorder on Tuesday December 10, 2024 @09:39PM (#42384157)
He sells supplements, including specific ingredients for which there isn't much evidence of efficacy. Even if you assume most of what he preaches and sells is scientific, some of it is unscientific which sort of undermines the entire pitch, I think.

Do TVs not have composite input anymore? I haven’t bought a new one in forever.
I don't think GP was talking about ordinary people, they were making a comment about a politician's declared plans.

I would be into ragchewing except (at least on 20/40/80 where I have a consistent setup) the vast majority of SSB contacts are with ancient men and most conversations I catch contain unambiguously racist statements or at least a lot of "kids these days" talk. I don't care that they're having those conversations, I just have no interest in talking to them.

Any reference for the scale of this? It feels unlikely to me from my bubble but I only know one or two people I think would be likely to try it.

Re:"Jeff Bezos and Amazon tried to imprison my husband" on Saturday August 10, 2024 @03:34PM (#41211695)
Preface: Obviously everything done to the Nelsons by the FBI/Amazon is despicable. That said, it's not addressed here whether her husband actually did something unethical, just whether it was against the employee agreement or strictly illegal.

I find this situation kind of interesting as it's incredibly rich real estate developers who did seem to be playing some kind of game vs the third richest person in the world who runs a vastly larger scummier enterprise. I don't really think either party is "regular people".

Re:gRPC: The Bad Parts on Friday June 28, 2024 @12:54PM (#40822503)
My main problems with grpc are threefold:

- The implementation quality and practices vary a lot. The python library lacks features that the go library has because they are philosophically opposed to them. Protobuf/grpc version pinning between my dependencies has broken repeatedly for me.

- If you are a services team, your consumers inherit a lot of difficult dependencies. Any normal json api does not do this, with openapi the team can use codegen or not.

- The people who have been most hype to me in person about grpc repeat things like "It's just C structs on the wire" which is completely fucking wrong, or that protobuf is smaller than json which is a more situational benefit. My point being their "opinion" is uninformed and band-wagoning.

This article gave me some new options for dunking on grpc if it's recommended.

Re:Last Hours of an Organ Donor on Monday May 27, 2024 @10:33PM (#40496828)
I guess the idea is that the psychological burden of having received a donated heart caused the woman to have hallucinations? I don't know what to do with that information, but I wanted to look at a charitable interpretation of the suggestion.
FYI if you sign up as a tech employee, it lets you view requests (and seemingly respond to them? I didn't try.) without verifying your account. This includes whatever personal details the user put into the request.
I opted out of this. There is insufficient transparency around the systems that process that data, who has access to it, what kinds of problems have occurred, and if it is being employed ethically (see the sibling comment about chronically poor facial detection of non-white people).
They sure put a lot of effort into enshrining chattel slavery into law and preventing its destruction. It's the only state to secede from another nation twice to protect slavery.
