Re:Apple Maps puts all buildings back in Gaza on Monday November 02, 2026 @04:19PM (#50343911)
I want to believe this is a glitch but then again with Tim Cook (and Apple) has shown many times that he'll do whatever it takes for being in the good graces of the administration.

Why did they write this post if they had not even allowed things to settle. It sounds like someone wanted to claim victory (and promo?)

Re:Watch Apple slowly become just another computer company on Wednesday October 28, 2026 @04:20PM (#50280330)
Nothing about Apple has changed. They make incredible hardware, and their CPUs are really good. Just that Apple enthusiasts put them on a pedestal thinking they are one of a kind.

There were just another company, doing a lot of good things, and also doing a lot of bad things. Most people were willingly ignoring the bad parts until now.

Re:Gemini 4 Carbon on Wednesday October 28, 2026 @01:52PM (#50277942)
How is this any different than terra, sol etc or leopard, yosemite etc, or model x, y, 3, s ..
Re:Gemini 4 Carbon on Wednesday October 28, 2026 @01:51PM (#50277900)
Dont companies always talk in private? Like, Apple having a business meeting with Meta is not nefarious nor out of the ordinary. Companies coordinate on things all the time. Why is that surprising to you?
Re:Gemini 4 Carbon on Wednesday October 28, 2026 @01:49PM (#50277855)
Isnt it about risk?

Just because you saw your friend move to a new country for a job doesnt mean you will make the same choices, even if you are similarly qualified.

Re:MacBook Pro with PROLED XDR Display and Touch on Wednesday October 28, 2026 @01:45PM (#50277767)
I think the confusion is lot of Apple enthusiasts drank the kool-aid the company served them saying touch screen is "yuck". And now they have a touch screen, it takes a while to re-orient themselves.

We saw this with foldables. It was a bad idea, but when Apple did it, it was a great idea all of a sudden.

And if you rewind a while back, you'll see "large phones are bad because one handed use .. blah blah" and then Pro Max.

Re:Bringing uv and ty together on Friday October 23, 2026 @08:58PM (#50217391)
I really really love uv but this uv-ty post seems "shipping the org chart"?

They could have just said uv now has type chancing capabilities (or whatever it is ..) ty afaik isn't a super popular brand so the post makes people first understand what ty is ..

Why do they need to even do that? They already know the link from the email body. This is some urban myth.

If it is for click tracking there are far efficient ways to do that.

You do realize all companies, including the most "moral" companies advertise - like Apple?
If you self host, why does it matter if it is E2E? What's your threat model?

What you need is encryption at rest yes?

Google PMs catching strays lol.

Is it that easy at these companies to change policies like these?

Ternus seem to be a lot more personable. On the flip side, the most you circulate the less elevated you become.

What does this? You can only 'use the device' for x seconds before ..shutting down?

Re:Quad9 (DNS Resolver) to Exit France on Thursday October 22, 2026 @05:12PM (#50201110)
I know what you're getting at, and I agree DNS is simple for folks who hang out in HN but at its core DNS is pretty complicated.

Try explaining top level authoritives, ttl, DoH etc etc to a lay person. Yes, it is example.com in, a.b.c.d out but it is anything but simple.

My larger point is calling "phone book" doesnt make DNS dumb.

Re:Quad9 (DNS Resolver) to Exit France on Thursday October 22, 2026 @04:41PM (#50200728)
There is nothing 'dumb' about DNS. It is a 'sophisticated software to translate human readable addresses to machine-understandable and infinitely routable identifiers'.

Anything can be reduced down to 'dumb' if you try hard enough. Officer, these are just chemicals in a specific quantity and just goes boom when mixed together.

Re:Quad9 (DNS Resolver) to Exit France on Thursday October 22, 2026 @04:37PM (#50200679)
> In most cases, you accessing my website is more like this scenario. Intermediaries (ISPs) brought you the product.

Offering a website to a certain country is not something ISP decided for you, but you actively did that yourself. I cant create a gambling website and host it in Monaco and then serve it to someone in CA and say that, it isnt on me, but on Comcast.

Re:Quad9 (DNS Resolver) to Exit France on Thursday October 22, 2026 @11:29AM (#50196772)
> Imagine doing everything possible to stop something. They then circumvent your protections with yet another service, and you get fined.

Isnt this what gets all tech companies into trouble all the time. Something objectionable happens (ChatGPT helping someone bulid a bomb for instance) and we go like "Do better".

Re:OpenAI models are coming to Google Cloud on Wednesday October 21, 2026 @10:29PM (#50190445)
So when cloud deals are signed, it is with a spending figure? Do you get discounts if it is a large number?

Thanks for you reply, it was very enlightening

Re:OpenAI models are coming to Google Cloud on Wednesday October 21, 2026 @09:41PM (#50190091)
Do you think most people around the world want access to ultrathink?

For a lot of folks, something low cost and low intelligence is what they want. And for a few that needs high intelligence, there's stronger models.

Google has both bases covered. It is brilliant.

Re:OpenAI models are coming to Google Cloud on Wednesday October 21, 2026 @09:39PM (#50190080)
Exactly, the definition of tradeoffs

Infact all companies, at all times are doing tradeoffs. You and I can be doing something else right now but I'm here on HN replying to you - and that's a tradeoff.

If someone suggests -just do X then you don't have to do a tradeoff, that just sounds wrong to me.

Re:OpenAI models are coming to Google Cloud on Wednesday October 21, 2026 @09:38PM (#50190060)
What does this mean?
Re:OpenAI models are coming to Google Cloud on Wednesday October 21, 2026 @09:37PM (#50190058)
Running m365 doesn't meant their boring ERP system has to run on Azure even if MS would love them to.

These are the companies running SAP and Oracle. It can run anywhere, including GCP and AWS.

Re:No More Icons in Every Menu by Default on Wednesday October 21, 2026 @09:34PM (#50190026)
All the things you mentioned are applicable to Adobe (!) as well. Photoshop, Lightroom, Premiere.. and not to mention Flash, InDesign etc

Adobe happened to be a shitty company but "enabling their users to do things that were previously purview of big business" isn't unique to Apple at all.

Infact, Apple is the biggest of the biggest companies of them all. Bigger than "professional" companies like Canon, Nikon, RED etc.

Apples advantage is stuff just works, which is more harder than it seems.

Re:The iPhone Duo on Wednesday October 21, 2026 @09:00PM (#50189780)
> The Duo name is perfect. It truly is like having two devices in one. The outer device is, by far, the worst iPhone Apple has ever made. It’s a miserable fat little thing. The inner device is a splendid, joyful, beautiful tablet, with a UI that out-iPads the iPad. For me, by far, it’s my favorite tablet experience ever. I prefer it to any iPad or Kindle-like reader I’ve ever used.

He uses the phrase "worst iPhone" several times in the article. I havent gotten a chance to play with Duo yet, but is this going the route of Vision Pro - a lot of fan fare at launch, but then fails to capture the imagination (and market share).

Speaking of which, whatever happened to the iPhone "thin". Dont even remember the name. Is it dead?

Re:No More Icons in Every Menu by Default on Wednesday October 21, 2026 @05:56PM (#50188218)
I think you're trying to find meaning when there's no meaning what so ever.

Large phones were a bad idea because you cant use it with one finger, until iPhone Pro Maxes came out.

Installing apps from the internet is scary because viruses, yet Macs let you do that no questions asked.

Ads are bad and dangerous, until it shows up on Apple Maps.

Apple is just a simple company, existing to make as much money as possible. They make beautiful devices though - but no reason to put them on a pedestal.

> Our cloud business is at any given moment in time forgoing short-term revenues because we are making compute trade-offs to support frontier AI development

Sundar Pichai just this week.

https://finance.yahoo.com/technology/ai/articles/google-ceo-...

I dont think big companies like Google react to news like that. Very likely this was meant to go out on Tuesday for weeks now. And it just happened to have coincided with another news.
Re:JPEG XL vs. AVIF for web use-cases on Friday October 16, 2026 @01:57PM (#50121895)
If you're transcoding why wont you go to avif or another one? If jpeg -> jpeg-xl uniquely better?
Re:JPEG XL vs. AVIF for web use-cases on Friday October 16, 2026 @01:56PM (#50121879)
That's.. horrific. How can someone be this out of touch?
