My son started making games in Scratch at around 8 or 9. He eventually graduated to Pico-8 and at 12 that is still his preferred tool for making games.

A few threads here recommend pico-8, however, you said he specifically wants the game to be 3D.

The developer of pico-8 has another project named Voxatron which is similarly accessible like pico-8, but for 3D gaming.

Re:Ask HN: Does LeetCode/HackerRank make you a better developer? on Wednesday November 01, 2023 @07:32AM (#38096933)
Absolutely not.

It’s pretty well established that the skills required for interviewing in the tech industry are not in line with the skills necessary to be an effective software engineer.

Anecdotally, I’ve worked with some complete utter doofuses who somehow passed the leetcode tests, but are completely incompetent otherwise.

Discarding unit tests is such terrible advice. The author clearly never discovered regression bugs at build time, or developed using a dynamically typed language.

Also, I would have expected to see "Use only strongly typed languages" as one of the bullet items. I get the sense that the author doesn't actually have a ton of enterprise experience.

Just speculation, but Doordash is obviously loosing some money due to poorly implemented "tests" like these, and who knows what other experiments-at-a-loss they are running.

Maybe if they toned down their "web scraping auto delivery option" program, and who knows what else, they could show a profit (and maybe they know this). But why bother if you can get away with it, and something truly innovative and profitable may come out of it.

Is this accurate though? Isn’t the number of seconds since 1970 absolute, and it’s up to the library generating the Gregorian date to take into account leap seconds? I suppose if these libraries are not taking into account leap seconds, then the actual rollover will be a few seconds earlier (or later?) than what we think.

> Why did you get into the field? What did you focus on at first?

Worked in sales at a software / hardware company in the HVAC industry. Our software platform had a really easy way to customize the business logic in java. I started building utilities / scripts in java and worked my way into software engineering from there.

> What are you doing at your job? Is it everything you dreamed of and more?

I'm a software engineer working on a popular customer facing service at a FAANG. I do enjoy the work.

> How did you break that first-job barrier?

I went from sales to software engineer at my first company, moving from sales into custom customer solutions department.

> What were you doing before this?

Not much, the sales job was my first job out of college. I graduated with a mechanical engineering degree.

> Any tips for the rest of us?

You must be passionate about programming and seriously enjoy software development. You must respect senior engineers and learn from them as mentors. You must not be discouraged by the pedigrees of your peers (people with CS degrees), directly out of college, they may have a slight advantage, but after a few years, you will be on a completely level playing field.

This doesn't make sense as fat is typically low in carbs. I think they mean the war for carbs had been won.

What a beautiful, well designed and informative explanation of the complex earth / sun relationship. Well done!

One thing I would love to see is the path of the sun across the sky for different times of year, and different locations on earth.

Here in Seattle, the difference is fairly dramatic between winter and summer, and I've come to realize that the sun is never directly overhead, not even in summer. It would be interesting to see the difference between polar regions vs in the tropics also.

Re:The Makefile I use with JavaScript projects on Wednesday February 28, 2018 @01:21PM (#16485289)
It's because there is always lag between the latest .js spec and what is supported by browsers. So transpilers (like babel) have to dumb it down from fancyNew.js to somethingIE6MightRun.js

It is not realistic/optimal to try to write your javascript to be supported by all browsers or runtime clients. It's better to write using the latest spec, and just have it dumbed down for you by transpilers at build time
