They're trying to downplay or deny climate change, without actually taking a contradicting position, because they know that will actually get downvoted to dead.

It's cowardly and intended to further the denial position.

Climate change is the most well-researched and cited ongoing-event in human history.

If you don't believe it and want to ignore science, that's your ignorance.

I want to believe it's bots pushing propaganda, and not that a non-insignificant portion of HN refuses to believe in climate change. But I really don't know these days.
They'll see it, tell a manager, it'll get added as a ticket to an Azure Devops board under the initiative for this month under the epic for employee suggestions, which will be reviewed & prioritised by Copilot and sent to a different middle manager as a weekly summary email and then automatically closed when no human ever interacts with the ticket after three months.

Tangent, and not the person you're replying to, but you just independently re-discovered why so many of us despise the AI companies.

Because that's what they are already doing. Selling a repackaged form of the stolen work of all of humanity, without credit or payment.

Re:Zero click, silent, remote Android DoS on Thursday October 29, 2026 @06:23AM (#50286854)
This trend upsets me so much, because my brain actually does work like that, concepts and ideas exist in 3d space and have likenesses to each other.

I used to write like this, but I can't anymore. (I suspect enough people did in the training set that that's why it ended up being part of the vernacular.)

Norway. Same.

At the peak of the shift (usually when DST comes into or out of effect) we're either losing or gaining an hour of daylight per week.

Throwing an hour shift one way or the other does nothing for us. And in peak winter the sun isn't up for me until 10 anyway, and it's down by 3, so what are we even saving?

Hitting me right now with the time change, and pitch dark at 6pm. It changes so fast every year.
We have technical unions in Norway for engineers, it's not preventing layoffs. :/
That's not how the world works, and I don't need this in a thread where I'm dealing with the grief of a good career. Please shove off.

I would gladly not work and learn cello and physics independently if that were a real possibility, but it's not, and it won't be within my lifetime.

I had a job in a system that required jobs to survive that genuinely didn't bother me. I actually quite enjoyed it most of the time. Now it's permanently dead and I need something else, or I am homeless and starve to death.

> No, I fully reject any notion of life value coming from work, and those who hold your view are basically jailors to those who don't want our identity defined by work.

Fuck off.

> and some of them are going nuts now.

Pretty much this. I know it sounds melodramatic but it literally feels like rotting.

I don't solve anything anymore. I don't get any spark of fixing bugs. I don't DO ANYTHING, and it's fucking chipping away at me.

Also I'm fairly sure people are going to realise soon that if they're happy with slop, they don't actually need highly trained engineers anymore.

This whole thread actually prompted me to look into electrician work, especially in renewables that we have here in Norway.

I might fix my burnout and go to school to get my 2 year qualification. AI can't rewire a hydro dam.

It's really bad now, yeah. :( It just really hurts that I spent well over a decade of my life learning and honing skills to engineer safe, quality software and now it's just, useless.

No one cares at best, or I'm callously told "keep up or fall behind" at worst. When that's not even the problem, it just, sucks now. There's no joy in anything I do professionally.

Can I ask where you went? I'm seriously looking for an exit, I just don't know what yet. Maybe a trade, in Scandinavia the pay is actually comparable, I just don't want to go back to school.

No one at all claimed that, certainly not the person you responded to. They're talking about how to use these tools in a way that gives you insight into what they produce. So, as an engineer, you know the shape of the output, before it's made.

That's it. Maybe you should go re-read?

> doesn't make you as special as you might think.

Way to come off as incredibly insecure. There's no need to randomly put people down.

I work on my code this way, but I have no idea what my colleagues are doing, and it's impossible to review thousands of new/changed lines a week.

I just approve PRs, because I have to. I don't know what else to do. I can barely keep an eye on all my code.

Actively looking, but job market is rough in Northern Europe. I quit caring about quality in any capacity here, the company has clearly chosen its direction, against my very vocal complaints.

My last interview, with what I thought was a great company, failed when I didn't understand what NLP was when they asked me about it.

> NLP? > Natural Language Programming, it's the future. Claude, GPT, etc.

I laughed, he didn't, looked offended and said it was a serious question. I had thought it was a joke, said "oh you mean LLMs". I tried to answer seriously, of course, but that was my third round technical interview and I didn't get a call back.

Just getting a paycheck and producing mediocre work until I get something new. (Senior engineer, 10 YOE, patents, 3 years at a unicorn).

Also considering becoming an electrician.

So much ascribed intent to a comment I wrote in 30 seconds about shit statistics. The math is bad, the reporting and conclusions are bad.

That's it, really, I'm not some evil wordsmith with an agenda.

But okay man, sure.

Re:Campus deplatformings hit record high on Sunday October 18, 2026 @06:34PM (#50146182)
Ask me a question in good faith and I'll gladly answer.
Re:Campus deplatformings hit record high on Sunday October 18, 2026 @12:35PM (#50142610)
Oh good catch. Ok, so nationally, if each campus held only one event per week, we're saying 0.07% of all meetings had someone speak up against it. Less than a tenth of one percent.

I couldn't roll my eyes any harder. This certainly is a national crisis.

Math: 200/(50*6000)

Re:Campus deplatformings hit record high on Sunday October 18, 2026 @12:24PM (#50142485)
It's not deplatforming if campuses don't want to hear someone speak. This seems like a bonkers term to use.

200 deplatforms in a year? (There were 75 in 2003, the 30 year trend is gentle at best.)

There's almost 6000 higher education institutions in the US. This is fabricated outrage.

Re:Gen Z Is the First Generation Dumber Than Their Parents on Sunday October 18, 2026 @10:28AM (#50141406)
Seriously, I have no idea why the onus is on the generation, the framing should be "education is massively underfunded, teachers are abandoned with ever increasing class sizes and ever decreasing agency, and kids are left with smartphones to fend for themselves in an environment where they may be shot and killed at any moment".

We, the older generations, have failed them.

This was such a good watch, thank you
Re:What I Self-Host on Thursday October 15, 2026 @06:36PM (#50111358)
Yeah they have integrated end to end encryption, this made me go digging, and I found they have a bridge app that handles it.

https://proton.me/support/bridge-for-linux

Excited to set this up, I had assumed it wasn't a possibility.

Re:What I Self-Host on Thursday October 15, 2026 @06:12PM (#50111128)
Like the other person said, proxmox allows containers or full VMs, and the base OS takes less than 2 GB RAM.

My jellyfin LXC idles at a few hundred megs of ram, shares the base debian kernel, and if anyone does ever break in, they don't get access to anything else, anywhere else on my server. (All media is also mounted read-only to the jellyfin LXC.)

I really, really like it, just set it up recently. Everything in its right place.

Re:What I Self-Host on Thursday October 15, 2026 @06:07PM (#50111064)
You can do this with Proton?? How does it handle decryption/encryption, etc?

Would absolutely love to do this, proton frontend annoys me at times.

Re:What I Self-Host on Thursday October 15, 2026 @06:04PM (#50111030)
I think it just sounds intimidating if one hasn't tried, but they are really well designed pieces of software, that are relatively simple to set up (just have to go through the motions and connect everything with API keys).

Highly recommend them to OP. My stack went down once in the past 4 years and it was my fault.

They use both, heavily. An outage, like the one recently, severely affects them.

> In October 2026, George Barros of the Institute for the Study of War said the network had become "the backbone of military communications in Ukraine", used by land, naval and air forces, with both Starlink and Starshield (the US DOD service) used depending on the application.[60]

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Starlink_in_the_Russo-Ukrainia...

Right? This is what prompted musk to take down Starlink, after everything else?

Look at what they do, not what they say.

This is really interesting, but they're not carnivorous. The decaying salmon deposit nutrients in the soil. Carnivorous plants actually digest the insects directly for nutrients, usually because the soil is inhospitable.

I'd rather skip, personally. I just don't have to read things these days, and I see enough Claude/GPT prose at work, it makes me resent seeing it elsewhere.

I have a backlog of books written by humans I'd much rather spend my time on.

But I love a good handwritten tech article.
