Re:All British adults to require a digital ID 'Brit Card' on Saturday September 27, 2025 @04:38AM (#45394122)
How can they do this? The next election in UK is in 4 years.
I'm just sick of lies and propaganda like this leading to the brutal murder of people. Actual brutal murder, not imagined.
You mean the Stochastic terrorism perpetrated on Charlie Kirk by the media relentlessly brandishing him a Nazi?

You are right.
Experimental procedure on volunteer is experimental. More news at 11.

Well done Elon! Very excited for the future!

Did people really use to do all that work when someone asked them to write a recommendation on LinkedIn?
Re:Online Safety Act – shutdowns and site blocks on Wednesday August 13, 2025 @02:56PM (#44892361)
I do.
Re:Online Safety Act – shutdowns and site blocks on Wednesday August 13, 2025 @08:24AM (#44887578)
Based on your last paragraph, thanks for confirming your attempts at gaslighting. Just fyi, we see through it, and we are sure not falling for it.
Re:Online Safety Act – shutdowns and site blocks on Wednesday August 13, 2025 @07:03AM (#44886968)
Ah yes, the politically motivated and non-replicatable studies that rely on ever-changing definitions of violent crimes through the decades, underreporting / police deciding not to prosecute or even show up (the rape and abuse of those poor girls in Rotherham didn’t show up in statistics for decades, or the rampant shoplifting in London) and the social studies pro-immigration echo chamber. Please tell me more.
Re:Online Safety Act – shutdowns and site blocks on Wednesday August 13, 2025 @05:21AM (#44886283)
That’s some grade A gaslighting you’re attempting.
Good, the social engineering has become tiresome.
Re:A 37-year-old wanting to learn computer science on Saturday July 05, 2025 @12:52PM (#44473953)
What's surprising to me is that I've received downvotes for mentioning this.
Re:A 37-year-old wanting to learn computer science on Saturday July 05, 2025 @05:50AM (#44471467)
The things described as the goal of the OP are not Computer Science, they're mostly Software Engineering/Development. Even though there is overlap Computer Science is mostly math, completely irrelevant to setting up static blogs or web servers and somewhat relevant to developing applications. A more accurate title would have been "wanting to learn software development and the relevant bits of computer science which help with that"
Re:I deleted my second brain on Saturday June 28, 2025 @05:36AM (#44403402)
I'm not sure I can relate to the author. My Zettelkasten is not a todo list or project binder or whatever personal life management function they use it for.

Mine is for consolidation of knowledge. For instance, when I study math and I write a pen and paper proof as an exercise I then write a clean note from scratch and link to other theorems or corollary notes I have etc. Similar stuff for computer science or programming. I find out that this process solidifies the work I'd already done and make it less likely to forget.

I also think people get a bit too dogmatic about the ways to use technology to help improve your life. Like, what the heck complex rules about Zettelkasten? I don't know what kind of expectations they have going into this. Do these "influencers" telling you how to use it sell the promise of the ultra-intelligent god from the popular meme? Just open the damn editor and write, you will find what works for you through tinkering and iteration.

Well, apparently even sovereign countries sign treaties with each other.
Re:DOGE has 'god mode' access to government data on Thursday February 20, 2025 @06:42AM (#43113560)
I was just responding to a dubious assertion with a clear counter-example.

As for DOGE, I live in a different country and not really care to be frank, as an external observer the US is a testbed. We will see what kinds of results going all guns blazing to reduce fraud in government, instead of asking nicely, will produce in due time. As your leftist friend said, you need to break some eggs to make an omelette.

Re:DOGE has 'god mode' access to government data on Thursday February 20, 2025 @06:25AM (#43113465)
Same, the UK government definitely needs a similar audit.
Re:DOGE has 'god mode' access to government data on Thursday February 20, 2025 @06:23AM (#43113453)
> Reality has a famously left wing bias.

That's a bit ironic given leftist claims that men can become women and vice-versa.

Re:In the trenches: on being an Engineering Manager on Monday February 10, 2025 @04:07PM (#43005167)
Your job as a manager is to cut noise down for your team, so that they can focus on the signal. If you dump every silly thing on them injudiciously then you are not fit for the job, sorry.
Re:In the trenches: on being an Engineering Manager on Sunday February 09, 2025 @09:23AM (#42990857)
In my experience engineering managers have been just exception handlers, not leaders. If they can handle the exception by finding the right person to delegate to its fine, otherwise they rethrow so that that it bubbles up and the next level of management can catch it.

Generally, they never made any real decisions or have any real vision to inspire with and execute.

Re:In the trenches: on being an Engineering Manager on Sunday February 09, 2025 @09:14AM (#42990808)
Oh my god, if my manager asked me to waste my time on such trivialities - or even worse, calling team meetings to “discuss” them so that we can now collectively waste our time, I would quit the next moment. During my exit interview I would state that my manager was an imbecile, incompetent and the reason I am leaving.
That's rather an expansive and imaginative interpretation of the facts at hand.
I wish you were that meticulous with your ideological brethren as well. You don't have to ban anyone, you simply choose to ban people based on your personal preferences and/or which side of the bed you woke up today. And that's alright as this is a privately owned site, but stop with the hypocrisy please.

Re:UK online safety regulation comes into force on Wednesday December 18, 2024 @05:36AM (#42449450)
They don't, no billionaire can put you in jail for believing/saying something different that they want you to believe.

And let me get this straight, you think that having an institution that legislates the truth is protection against billionaires usurping that power? Who has the money to lobby those institutions to do their bidding? Me and you or the billionaire?

Re:UK online safety regulation comes into force on Tuesday December 17, 2024 @06:34PM (#42446607)
You want to give the power to the people that make the laws to also decree what is true or not? This is going to turn out well.

I don’t think that having institutions that can legislate the truth is compatible with free and just societies. Political power and democratic majorities do not decide the truth. if you think otherwise I don’t believe there is common ground to be found.

Re:UK online safety regulation comes into force on Tuesday December 17, 2024 @10:36AM (#42442198)
Murder is already illegal, and threatening to murder someone is already illegal. Any further legislation, the burden of proof is on them not on me or the parent poster. Otherwise one day they might claim that me taking a shit will lead to their murder and have my toilets removed.

Who determines what is misinformation? And after we have established this, who determines whether it was deliberate?
