On macOS, you can actually raise just the window you want but its more key presses.

Cmd+Tab until the application you want is highlighted, then keep holding Cmd and press 1, you'll then be shown all open windows for that application (you can stop holding Cmd) now use arrow key to select the window you want and press enter. Only that window will be raised.

Thanks, awesome product! Happy user for many years.
The cynics among us in Victoria believe the bid was just a state election stunt to woo rural voters that the government never intended to follow through with.

This https://krisp.ai/ works well to overcome background noise and conversations during meetings. It cleans up the audio you send and also the audio you receive. Not affiliated with them at all, just a satisfied customer.
OK upon actually reading the article it looks like they didn't include a timestamp - ouch.
An expired certificate should not cause that. I'd be very surprised if they did not have a cryptographic timestamp [1] on the driver signature. The presence of the timestamp allows the signature to be verified after the signing certificate has expired.

Re:Windows 11 update breaks PCs that dare sport a custom UI on Saturday March 04, 2023 @08:04PM (#35026117)
The Ethernet port on my Thinkpad workstation thunderbolt 3 dock simply stopped working after upgrading to Windows 11. From reading online its a known issue without any obvious fix. Killed the port so bad that it stopped working in Linux as well.

Well, at least that was until the dock had been unplugged from the power for a couple of weeks. The Ethernet port sprung back to life when I booted my laptop straight into Linux. I don't dare boot into Windows 11 again whilst docked.

This is a good win for Microsoft. Think of all the extra Windows ARM QA telemetry they will get which will improve the platform in the long run.
Re:ECC RAM should be a human right on Sunday January 22, 2023 @10:44PM (#34485223)
To see if ECC is working try overclocking the RAM if possible and looking for EDAC errors (they'll show up in dmesg) or from running edac-util. Eventually you should see something reported.
ZQ will quit without writing anything.

I have no idea why the Linux Teams application is so limited. Instead on Linux to get the missing features you can run browser based teams in Chrome or Edge. It supports window specific sharing. Can also do blurred and virtual webcam backgrounds (but does not support custom virtual background).
Re:Google Release Chrome OS Flex on Tuesday February 15, 2022 @06:02PM (#30354102)
Sure is. On the top of the installation guide page you are directed to if you sign up for the beta:

"Chrome OS Flex is currently released for early access testing and is not suitable for production use. CloudReady is available for immediate stable deployment. Google will automatically update CloudReady devices to Chrome OS Flex, when Chrome OS Flex is stable. We welcome your feedback as we work to improve the product. Send feedback."

Have been using CloudReady for a couple of years on a Lenovo X201s used by the kids. Performance is excellent.

Re:From macOS to Arch Linux on Friday November 05, 2021 @09:15PM (#29126568)
True. For a Hack as with Linux, using compatible hardware is the key. However once that configuration process is done (and done right) from then on its typically a rock solid experience until the next major Mac OS version upgrade. In some ways it is superior to an actual Mac since you have the ability to inject kexts without having to stuff around with reboot to recovery mode, disabling SIP to install and so on. OpenCore is an impressive piece of software.

Have also had a cooked laptop in the past (in my case it was a Mac). A few years later when using a Linux laptop I decided to disabled sleep entirely but left hibernation available instead [1]. This means that desktop environments will not show the sleep option at all, instead they will just show the hibernation option. Also I have the laptop set to automatically hibernate if it is running on battery power and the lid gets closed. Have also configured it to ignore any lid open events therefore it will only wake when the power button gets pressed. Waking from hibernation isn't quite as quick as from sleep but its not that bad and I've never had a cooked laptop again!

Re:Silent HP Z440 workstation: replacing noisy fans on Saturday September 04, 2021 @04:32AM (#28413236)
Weird, I've worked with a few of them and found Z440s to be pretty much silent. OP must have been unlucky.
Yes that is what saddens me. I haven't seen those pole vault videos and find it disappointing that people would go to the trouble of making them.

Anyway, the fact these athletes have the choice to wear a competition uniform they find comfortable in the olympics without being penalized is a good thing.

If the team likes the new outfits (which look good) and are more comfortable in them, that's great. Likewise I see some other athletes have specified a preference for leotards which is also fine. All good as long as the athletes have a choice. Not sure I agree with labelling bikini-cut leotards as 'sexualized' though.

Open-Shell-Menu is a fork of Classic shell which is no longer updated since December 2017.

You'll still get a good five years out of a Hackintosh box. If you build it from the right components and use OpenCore https://dortania.github.io/OpenCore-Install-Guide/ its really not too hard. After Apple drops Intel support you can always switch it over to Linux or Windows.
Re:New 13-inch MacBook Pro on Tuesday May 05, 2020 @12:02AM (#23076358)
Not the OP but I've been using various Thinkpads running Ubuntu since 2010. Been using Linux for many years prior to that on desktops. Also have my family kitted out with them (again on Ubuntu). It is possible to use just fine from a default install with none to very minor tinkering required. However if you do put in a few hours of tinkering you'll reap the rewards in having the laptop behave exactly how you want it to. Here's a hint, install tlp along with the thinkpad kernel access source ("sudo apt-get install tlp tp-smapi-dkms" on Ubuntu) and set the battery charge thresholds. This will help with runtime on battery and also extend the life of the battery itself. is set to start charge at 88% and stop at 95%. In the past five years my battery has only depleted by a few percent in capacity.

I have used Macs (had 2 Mac Book Pros and a Mac Mini) and Windows but its Linux all the way now, specifically Ubuntu LTS. Not sure how people put up with Windows 10's constant forced updates. If it has to be Windows give me Windows 10 LTSC.

Ideal next laptop? Probably a Thinkpad X1 Carbon gen 7 or Dell XPS 2020.

Re:Windows 10 Virtual Desktop Enhancer on Wednesday February 22, 2017 @07:08AM (#13704883)
MATE 1.16.1 on Mint 18.1 (and more than likely the many previous versions going back to the GNOME 2 days) remembers the resolution and positioning of any attached monitors. At home I use a Thinkpad and a 30" 2560x1600. At work the same Thinkpad and two 24" 1920x1200 screens. MATE recalls the various layouts without issue. If I have used a projector to present, it will retain that configuration for next time I use that projector as well.

Additionally, if I disconnect a monitor it will re-position any applications that were open on the disconnected monitor to the remaining one. If I reconnect that same monitor the applications from it will migrate back to it again. Very neat, just works, gets out of my way and I can get on with the task I am trying accomplish. This comes in handy when switching back and forth the input on the 30" screen to have it show the display output of my desktop PC switching the input has the effect of disconnecting the monitor as far as the laptop is concerned.
