There is no cert. It's http. That's how old Prospero is.
Re:Prospero: A new coding harness for a more civilized age on Saturday October 31, 2026 @02:22PM (#50318578)
I'm tired of tech people forgetting to see if something else is using a name: http://www.prospero.org/

Way to cause confusion.

This is like starting a new country and calling it France.

Re:Geist Serif on Friday October 30, 2026 @01:44PM (#50307488)
As someone else mentioned, it's almost certainly licensing costs. Monotype bought up all the classic foundries, and their licensing gets very expensive, very quick. You could literally hire a top-tier type designer as a permanent full-time hire to work on your in-house fonts part time and then do whatever they want with the other 99.9% of their time and it would still be cheaper than what Monotype wants.
Re:AI Isn't Replacing SREs. It's Deskilling Them on Friday October 30, 2026 @01:06PM (#50306867)
So they get deskilled which means they're no longer considered professionals but merely technicians which means they're now elligible for overtime.
Re:No Need for Retirement When Utopia Is Around the Corner on Thursday October 29, 2026 @04:53PM (#50295761)
I like you thinking. If more's good, then even more would be even better.
Re:Websites Should Be Printable on Thursday October 29, 2026 @04:52PM (#50295744)
DVI is the output of TeX.
That's for mission-critical load-bearing infrastructure hidden behind modernized interfaces. Nobody has touched that script in 33 years.
Re:Websites Should Be Printable on Monday October 26, 2026 @12:18PM (#50246345)
Exactly. That's why they should handle device independent output.
Re:Websites Should Be Printable on Monday October 26, 2026 @12:17PM (#50246327)
The biggest problem is that we went to mobile-first design along with a horrible split between backend and frontend functionality. If you hit view source on a lot of sites these days a page will be just a stub for calling javascript that actually puts the html on the page. It's not so much a function of hiding what the site does as it is web developers are afraid to write html and instead punt that into their javascript framework-of-frameworks.
Re:No Signs of AI Payoff Outside the Tech Sector on Saturday October 24, 2026 @04:05PM (#50224625)
It's almost like Big Tech is a net drain on everyone.
Re:What Is Gridifcation on Friday October 23, 2026 @01:02PM (#50212131)
They are attempting to humanize it.

He bought 37,000 acres of forest land because who wouldn't buy 37,000 acres of forest land if they had the means and opportunity to buy 37,000 acres of forest land?
Re:No More Icons in Every Menu by Default on Friday October 23, 2026 @12:15PM (#50211385)
I wish that were true. Unfortunately hardly a month goes by before I have to explain to someone that 1) those three little lines on top of each other aren't just a decoration but can be clicked, 2) that's where the settings live, 3) you've been in IT for 27 years but don't realize that's a thing you can click what a UX fail.
Re:Facebook now charging to post more than 2 links a month on Wednesday October 21, 2026 @06:25PM (#50188522)
Just like people shopped at Sears up until the day the stores finally closed.
Re:No More Icons in Every Menu by Default on Wednesday October 21, 2026 @06:10PM (#50188364)
We let the wrong sort of designers do the design. The designers that simultaneously made changes under the guise of "UX" just sort of made it up as they went along without any basis in reality. That's how we got stuck with the hamburger menu.
Re:Plex laid off the whole player team on Wednesday October 21, 2026 @04:22PM (#50187086)
That reminds me... need to cancel plex pass.
Re:Upcoming Critical PHP Security Release on Wednesday October 21, 2026 @03:53AM (#50177399)
Mikrotik developers would never stoop so low as to use a scripting language written by someone else.
Re:Upcoming Critical PHP Security Release on Wednesday October 21, 2026 @03:41AM (#50177315)
It's sad how many wordpress installs haven't been patched in a decade. they're so old even new exploits aren't supported.
Re:EMudhra Intermediate CA Compromise on Tuesday October 20, 2026 @05:47PM (#50173148)
The baddies also take a look at the CT logs and look for fresh wordpress instances that haven't yet been configured and will helpfully configure them for you within a few minutes.
They can blame source training data rather than their own malicious intent. It's the perfect crime!
Now you have an infinite number of problems.
Re:Facebook now charging to post more than 2 links a month on Tuesday October 20, 2026 @11:43AM (#50168110)
Remember how Sears was a thing but they kept making dumb decisions and were also unable to adapt to new realities? Facebook/Meta is like that. Doomed company walking.
Re:Zero-Click Spyware Delivered via Targeted Ads: AdFection on Thursday October 15, 2026 @11:23PM (#50113637)
Back in the day web sites that were ad-supported had their own departments that dealt with ad sales, so it's not like it can't be done.
Every single server with a dozen ethernet and/or IB ports that run something like four pairs in each connector for bandwidth, times 8 to 42 servers in a cabinet times a couple thousand cabinets in a building times a dozen buildings in one location. And then you need the fiber to connect all the switches together, and the buildings together, and then you need to tie the facilities into the wider world through various ways.

It adds up quick.

If you work for an ad tech firm you are one of the baddies.
Re:Git-Like MS Word Version Control System on Wednesday October 14, 2026 @08:33PM (#50097605)
Oof. Bad name. There's already an 'sccs' version control system.

For the curious: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Source_Code_Control_System

They make the fiber optic cables and such that connect everything.
Re:Strengthening our defenses against distillation attacks on Monday October 12, 2026 @11:04PM (#50066075)
Wouldn't it be funny if they killed off distillation and 93% of their business went away?
Re:A Modern Web App in C on Monday October 12, 2026 @09:43PM (#50065529)
Best I can do is use a framework built on top of a framework.
Re:A Modern Web App in C on Monday October 12, 2026 @04:55PM (#50062960)
Wasn't amazon running on tandem back then?
