This is exactly the kinda bug where you want to make a big splash though. You don't just want the guy to silently fix it, everyone in the database needs to be vetted again.
Not every hospital is a trauma center, according to the article this hospital only dealt with GSW victims
Re:How Long Does Music Stardom Last? A Statistical Analysis on Thursday August 08, 2024 @07:50PM (#41197596)
I'd argue Taylor Swift has done it too, and to a less mainstream degree Trent Reznor who has kept his career rolling along forever.

A core audience who will buy what ever you sell is key, and also not being afraid to change your style from album to album

Re:Notion about their usage of WASM SQLite on Wednesday July 17, 2024 @04:50PM (#40990211)
Unfortunately WebSQL was ahead of its time, I have no doubt it would have caught on more today with the resurgent popularity of SQLite.

IndexedDB got to ride the NoSQL hype of the 2010's

Re:Speed Limiters Now Mandatory in All New EU Cars on Tuesday July 09, 2024 @04:49PM (#40920931)
It's not always about getting there "faster". I regularly encounter trucks with unsecured loads, drivers visibly weaving, and other dangerous situations. I'm certainly not going to die on some "well this is the speed limit" hill behind them.

Driving isn't some binary situation, you have to constantly predict erratic behavior and react to your surroundings.

No, you ideally want all the jobs to be good. With the old model it was clear what the floor for getting something delivered was. Target could have instead adjusted order minimums or shrunk delivery zones instead.

Gamifying peoples livelihood is the problem.

Ok, guess I'm out of the loop then, I thought they already allowed that

Is there any marketplace that allows a seller to advertise a cheaper alternative within their marketplace?
The government would probably be knocking on his door if he developed a guided hat dropping system

No one is stopping you from still having a JSON API if your hypothetical use case requires it.

The Accept header is there for a reason

Re:You can help Anna's Archive by seeding torrents on Thursday June 13, 2024 @02:12PM (#40672754)
You're looking for a "seedbox" which is essentially the torrenting equivalent of a VPS
Your browser history doesn't contain screen recordings of what you do on websites
Re:lsix: Like "ls", but for images on Friday June 07, 2024 @12:23PM (#40610135)
I use tmux basically the same way but prefer tmux sessions because I find tabs hard to navigate reliably.

With tmux I can assign a name to each session, list all sessions, and have keyboard shortcuts to take me to a specific session or create it if it doesn't already exist. <leader>+J always opens projectfoo, <leader>+K projectbar, etc.

With tabs you need to know which tab contains what and what order everything is in.

Doesn't California already ban non competes? The industry has seemingly thrived there and I've never heard of it being a problem.

Re:Tmux is worse-is-better on Saturday May 25, 2024 @05:08PM (#40477890)
The argument about parsing twice doesn't seem very good to me. Vim and emacs are also parsing keystrokes, should we abandon them too?

The cynic in me thinks it's more likely that because kitty offers tmux features he wants to lock users in to his product.

Re:Lapis: A Web Framework for Lua on Saturday May 25, 2024 @11:11AM (#40475495)
Looks like you can bypass the lapis renderer and use ngx.print() and ngx.header() to control the response yourself

Look under skip_render here: https://leafo.net/lapis/reference/actions.html#render-option...

Re:How Shadow Banning Can Silently Shift Opinion Online on Tuesday May 21, 2024 @01:01PM (#40430982)
Yea maybe our definitions are just different, because I wouldn't call HN a social media site. It's a content aggregator to me, with some social features, like Reddit or Slashdot.

Look at Instagram, Twitter, or Facebook, I believe there is a desire for a less algorithmic approach on those sites, hence all the uproar about the algorithms and shadow banning. Reverse chronological ordering from people you follow was the standard before, and a feature before revenue mattered as much. You curated your own feed by following people, not by a black box

Re:How Shadow Banning Can Silently Shift Opinion Online on Tuesday May 21, 2024 @12:49PM (#40430836)
Sorry wasn't meant as an attack, the algorithm based feeds of instagram and twitter are almost a decade old now, and I believe facebooks older.

There are definitely people in the tech field who have only (or mostly) experienced algorithmic based feeds.

Re:How Shadow Banning Can Silently Shift Opinion Online on Tuesday May 21, 2024 @12:05PM (#40430266)
Maybe you're too young to remember or there's some sarcasm I'm missing, but that's literally how social media sites used to work.

Content discovery was word of mouth or a separate page dedicated to popular stuff.

Re:How Shadow Banning Can Silently Shift Opinion Online on Tuesday May 21, 2024 @12:01PM (#40430204)
Sounds good in theory but how many people are actually qualified to interpret those algorithms? Average Joe on facebook is going to believe it does what ever Bob tells him it does.
Pro audio users aren't using the play button on the keyboard (the space bar is the industry standard to toggle playback), nor using bluetooth headphones (way too much latency to do anything meaningful)
As opposed to what?

Linux barely has functioning wifi, bluetooth, audio, and video, and Windows also has countless utilities to decrapify the OS. It's not specific to Mac just a different flavor.

I can't help but wonder who this is actually for?

Conversing with a computer sounds pathetic, but this will be pushed down our throats in the name of innovation (firing customer service agents)

What's the issue? I've been using stow for a decade now and can't recall ever running into problems
Re:Dotfiles: Unofficial Guide to Dotfiles on GitHub on Tuesday May 07, 2024 @09:44AM (#40285368)
I use stow, which has some nice advantages vs managing symlinks yourself

Re:Sam Bankman-Fried sentenced to 25 years in prison on Thursday March 28, 2024 @02:27PM (#39855559)
Our prison system is undeniable terrible but we also so rarely see white collar criminals get what they deserve. Most of these guys get a slap on the wrist and somehow fail upwards.

And he's almost guaranteed to serve a smaller portion of that time for "good behavior".

I never understood why we put condiments in slim/squeeze bottles, I would love to buy a jar of ketchup.
