The mantra has always been to only create the company after sending the first invoice.

Edit: oh it's setup like this to cheat on taxes.

And? the article you linked only has primary sources.
@grok: is this true?

Thomas Bangalter's father was a French disco producer and songwriter who helped them a lot in their early career. Sure helps.
Libel laws in the UK are way more problematic / idiosyncratic than law about "incitement to hatred", which are common (at least in Europe) and made to repress dog whistles.

edit: SLAPP suits are basically legal there, and often used to suppress speech or journalism which would be legitimate and even encouraged elsewhere.

Sorry, I didn't see the "much softer targets" remark but I disagree anyway.

Marketing on HN can be very powerful. The mindshare gain can be enormous. Niches in general are very rewarding if the underlying platform (Google/Facebook/Amazon/Ebay) doesn't deplatform you.

I don't have time to look it up but I'm sure minimaxir (Certified HN Influencer) has made a study on it.

PG remarked on it in What I've Learned from Hacker News[1]:

"But what happened to Reddit won't inevitably happen to HN. There are several local maxima. There can be places that are free for alls and places that are more thoughtful, just as there are in the real world; and people will behave differently depending on which they're in, just as they do in the real world.

I've observed this in the wild. I've seen people cross-posting on Reddit and Hacker News who actually took the trouble to write two versions, a flame for Reddit and a more subdued version for HN."

Anecdata: just today I reactivated an account on a startup I learned about from a Show HN[2]

Coincidentally, Reddit (YC05) IPO'ed in March so I'm sure you'll find plenty of analysis on that.

Gallowboob reportedly got paid <https://knowyourmeme.com/memes/people/gallowboob>.

It used to be called Curation, Marketing, or Expert Advice but it's been algorithmified to death.

Karma farming.

it's a reference to the previous para:

Hello, friend. (I'm quite sorry for the interruption—the non-modal popups didn't fit enough text.)

Would you permit me to send you updates a few times per year?

Re:Apple Cash on Thursday June 02, 2022 @04:15PM (#31599979)
yeah rip-off was harsh (ESL). I see now that the Apple Pay Cash name was in place earlier. Though the brand presence and ad campaigns for (Square's) Cash App means it's a bonus anyway.

(Remember Apple once tried to trademark App)

a fork developed by who?

OP is literally Gitlab admitting they can't build a competitive web editor.

CI.
Re:Apple Cash on Monday May 23, 2022 @02:17AM (#31475842)
the name is a rip-off of Square's Cash App: https://cash.app Wallet is an actual wallet where you can put cards, coupons...

Pay is the whole system of APIs used to pay via NFC or online, authed by biometrics (Touch/FaceID). As a user you just add your credit card and it works better than contactless credit cards.

Apple Card is an Apple credit card with cashback backed by Goldman Sachs. US-only.

Re:Heroku CI and Review App Secrets Compromised on Wednesday May 18, 2022 @03:43AM (#31420217)
the subsequent blog post (https://blog.heroku.com/we-heard-your-feedback) says:

> Additionally, we have no evidence that the attacker has accessed any customer accounts or decrypted customers’ environment variables.

which, as pointed out in its HN thread, means "we now know they got access to encrypted vars, and we don't know yet if they could have decrypted them." in BS-speak.

The title "We've Heard Your Feedback" is also a red herring, usually means "we know we fucked up bad and we still have no idea of the whole impact of the breach".

Re:Show HN: Take a Passport Photo in the Browser on Thursday May 05, 2022 @02:12AM (#31270135)
UK is just kicking the can down the road:

> If your photo doesn’t meet the rules you may have problems with your application or when you travel.

I'm pretty sure they don't check. "May" now means "legal told us to ask you to PLEASE don't do this".

Related, I often see people trip on the sense of MAY in RFCs (https://www.ietf.org/rfc/rfc2119.txt), because in everyday use it has become "passive-agressive must".

edit: I'm ESL so might be reading way to much into this.

Twitch is Amazon's hedge against Youtube, I won't say it was "successful" pre-acquisition.

The Thames watershed is pretty small, you've left it if you've ever gone north of Luton.
this is Uber's strategy.

Yes, please get some context in the title.

It's really, really good. Short but well-written.

The one on chlorine trifluoride (linked in OP, but fixed link) is also really good: https://www.science.org/content/blog-post/sand-won-t-save-yo...
