Re:National Opt-Out Day Called Against Invasive Body Scanners on Friday November 12, 2010 @11:44PM (#1900312)
John Pistole should man up, show some leadership, and release his bodyscan to the public to demonstrate through actions not words how these scanners aren't a big deal. John: we're waiting for the pics.

Re:Are Canadian Universities 'Too Asian'? on Friday November 12, 2010 @12:35AM (#1896656)
no, these people just feel so entitled that they want to be able to party party party AND feel (not actually be) well-educated. anyone who works harder than them and learns more is threatening to this feeling.
Re:With help from MIT, Akamai sues competitor on Wednesday November 10, 2010 @04:00PM (#1891777)
Akamai needs to wake up and realize that their technology hasn't been a big differentiator for a few years now and change their pricing to reflect that.
Re:Help me start a FOSS Tithing movement on Wednesday November 10, 2010 @10:48AM (#1890660)
you wanna use the word tithe then you're going to be brining in a lot of connotation baggage. not a fan.

Re:Half of Milgram’s subjects told him to take a hike on Monday November 08, 2010 @02:26AM (#1881736)
it's too bad nobody neutralized the authority figure and liberated the prisoner.
Re:Reverse.jar on Monday November 08, 2010 @01:46AM (#1881667)
the only struggle with scheme is with falling asleep
Re:Reverse.jar on Monday November 08, 2010 @01:45AM (#1881661)
maybe next year, if you keep up the good work, you'll be reading about Appeal to Some Website.
Re:Reverse.jar on Monday November 08, 2010 @01:28AM (#1881616)
I am mostly doing programming in languages with GC, which in this case is fine because it's OK for it to go, you know, kind of slow.
Re:Reverse.jar on Sunday November 07, 2010 @10:12PM (#1881227)
Your argument is so compelling. Now I see how wrong I've been. I'll just accept everything the ivory tower says from now on, on any topic, unconditionally. Brilliant.
Re:RockMelt on Sunday November 07, 2010 @09:23PM (#1881125)
maybe they can get together with kiha and combine their pointless efforts.
Re:Reverse.jar on Sunday November 07, 2010 @09:22PM (#1881122)
I'm impressed with lambda calculus as a mathematical formalisms and its equivalence with TMs, and I am impressed but not overly enamored with homoiconicity & metaprogramming/macros. I like conditionals. Not a fan of marketing minimal syntax but having special forms. Not a fan of cons as a a building block for everything. Not a big believer in garbage collection. And certainly not a believer that Lisp is a practical programming language for much of anything these days.

But don't let me stop you from caaaaadring away!

Re:RockMelt Unveils a Web Browser for the Facebook Era on Sunday November 07, 2010 @06:51PM (#1880767)
almost as underwhelming as what it turns out kiha is doing
Re:Reverse.jar on Sunday November 07, 2010 @05:06PM (#1880465)
You know, a lot of non-academic languages are pretty crappy... like Ruby, or PHP. But I'm not impressed with languages out of academia either. I don't care about your -morphisms or fancy type systems...
Re:Ballmer sells 20% of his MSFT holdings on Sunday November 07, 2010 @01:44AM (#1878794)
it screams QE2 to me
Re:Zed Shaw, LPTHW, & Learn You An Ruby on Saturday November 06, 2010 @07:44PM (#1878096)
these "Learn You..." (NB: this does not include LPTHW) books seem like a post-modern version of the "For Dummies" series. So, if you enjoyed the vapid "For Dummies"-style jokes but wanted more non-sequiturs, these are the books for you.
Re:Startup Quote: Thomas Edison, co-founder, General Electric on Saturday November 06, 2010 @01:17AM (#1876170)
so I guess Edison would prefer the Slap Chop over the LHC. superb.
Re:Steve Ballmer sells about $1.3 billion in shares of Microsoft on Saturday November 06, 2010 @12:17AM (#1875992)
this is a good time given the boost that QE2 has given the stock market.
Re:PDF goodness in Chrome on Friday November 05, 2010 @05:55PM (#1875090)
It's faster to load PDFs than anything I've ever used previously. Thanks Google & Foxit.
Re:Goodbye, Chrome (How Chrome got me banned from hacker news) on Friday November 05, 2010 @02:17AM (#1872226)
the lesson here is to disable flash
Ideally, kids should drop out of college because they found something better to do with their time, not the other way around.
Re:Google's $8.5 million Buzz settlement a go on Wednesday November 03, 2010 @08:44AM (#1864560)
here is what I sent Google in response:

I love Gmail. I've loved it since the beginning when I got an invite code from [redacted] and I think it has just gotten better and better over the years. But, I am disappointed that you didn't commit to being more careful with how you handle privacy leaks with new products. Either make a commitment that you won't intentionally do something like this again, or admit that your plan is to "educate" people about auto-added privacy-violating products that ride on Gmail's coattails. If you plan on going the latter route, please let me know so I can switch to a different email provider now.

Re:Superstitious Beliefs Getting More Common on Tuesday November 02, 2010 @09:47PM (#1863256)
Reminds me of how Peter Thiel thinks dropping out of college will bring you great startup success.
strange, I find many economists dogmatic and heartless.
Re:Why leave Google to join Facebook? on Monday November 01, 2010 @05:31PM (#1858316)
the people that are leaving google to join facebook are doing it mainly for the same reason they joined google in the first place: status.
