Love this.

It's just not a long term thing, for obvious reasons. People do it for a bit and then realise that the lifestyle is transient. So it doesn't go on long enough to cause serious problems.

If you're still doing this at age 50 then you'll be a lonely old man.

Re:Cory Doctorow: The Swivel-Eyed Loons Have a Point on Saturday June 03, 2023 @10:31AM (#36177009)
TfL have official information on this, it's not a random number.

I'm not doing your research for you. The poor and middle class do drive in London, if you think otherwise you're simply mistaken.

Re:Cory Doctorow: The Swivel-Eyed Loons Have a Point on Friday June 02, 2023 @12:24PM (#36167186)
Approximately 50% of London households have at least one car.

You need to invent a new class to put them (and me) in, I guess.

Flatshare people mostly don't, that's basically it. The council estates are full of cars. If you were here it would be obvious.

Even buses in London, the fanciest buses, are less tidy and clean than my 20 year old five owners Honda Civic.
Re:Cory Doctorow: The Swivel-Eyed Loons Have a Point on Wednesday May 31, 2023 @02:46PM (#36142261)
Yes.

This, mixed with the artist class pretending that poor people don't own cars, because they don't in their flatshare.

It's exactly the same as climate change.

It doesn't matter if one of us drives a pollutey car. It matters if millions or billions of us do.

The entire concept of being elite is manipulating others into having and doing less.

I mean, quite literally not everyone can have the life of someone who has significant wealth even.

If you're not an official company with a legal presence, yes.

A lot of seriously dense replies to my comment, seemingly wilfully misunderstanding.

_Obviously_ the legal department at an actual company is not bullshit.

Re:Rarbg Is No More on Wednesday May 31, 2023 @11:57AM (#36139839)
For a real company, sure!
Re:Rarbg Is No More on Wednesday May 31, 2023 @11:47AM (#36139695)
It's not an opinion.

Legal is very useful in the general case, but if you're an anonymous torrent site operator who fully intends to ignore the law anyway it's a waste of time.

Re:Rarbg Is No More on Wednesday May 31, 2023 @10:57AM (#36139115)
Basically all of an actual software company is bullshit jobs unrelated to the core product like legal, marketing, investor relations, HR, maybe even developers for R&D etc.

Running a website doesn't require that many people.

I've worked at companies with 4 developers and 30+ "other stuff". The company would not be profitable and we would not get paid without them, but the actual product would work just fine if we wanted it to.

I'm surprised that this wasn't already done - could you save fuel if you knew you had a lower take off weight?

Or maybe weigh the whole plane before take off?

I find it amusing that weight is somehow some precious value, though. If someone is embarassed about being fat I mean, everyone around them can see that.

You're right and it works, but people with eating disorders have mental health issues that push them into obsessive behaviours, they need to be trained out of them.

An anorexic could hear that advice and decide that well, 1500 under maintenance is even better right? Not great.

Re:How to Stare at Your Phone Without Losing Your Soul on Wednesday May 31, 2023 @04:07AM (#36135756)
It's tautological if you phrase it that way.

Hiking is just fun. Like, actually fun. If you set up the mental barrier that exercise is bad and sucks and feels bad, then sure, now it's bad.

If you're super unfit it might suck, much like sitting down and bashing out some cool scripts in Python would suck if you had no programming knowledge, but that's fixable for most.

It's not clear that you _can_ make a cheaper solution.

Solar and wind have lower EROEI than fossil fuels.

Re:AI Is an Insult Now on Tuesday May 30, 2023 @11:24AM (#36125963)
Until GPT7, when it's better, and "this looks like it was an art project" is an insult :-(.
Re:What if nobody is bad at maths? on Monday May 29, 2023 @09:51AM (#36113959)
I don't think that being good or bad at something has as much of an impact as whether you're interested in it or motivated by it and therefore choose to do it in the first place.

When someone says they're bad at running, they typically don't mean that they would be bad if they went on a training regimen, they mean that their current state is untrained, bad.

I agree with your quoted section.

I'm happy to discuss it, but almost always, including now, it seems to be a waste of time, because I agree with you! I think you're correct in identifying that a vegan diet has lower emissions and externalities than an omnivorous diet.

I can't speak for others, but at least for me, an omnivorous diet is not suboptimal.

It may have higher emissions, but that's not the sole metric I use when deciding what to do.

In everyday life I don't generally discuss my diet beyond small talk, because it serves no purpose.

So you'd probably lump me in with that 95% of irrationals, because in person, I'd just try to change the subject.

Gotcha.

Maybe there's a way to fix this with language? If someone says that they use the metro or cycle to work, I'm like, cool man, trains are sick, let's chat.

If someone says they "support a car-free lifestyle", I'm probably already starting to think about something else and glazing over.

Does veganism have a stigma? It certainly doesn't in my circles, it's super common and every restaurant in most major cities has vegan options now. I was vegan for a year and had no problems with it.

If you're talking about "convincing people to go vegan", most people don't like being preached to regardless of the topic, that's not a stigma.

For example, drinking alcohol has its' negatives, but if I'm in the pub with friends and some teetotaler decides to go off on a mission to convert me, my response is going to vary from smiling and nodding to telling them to piss off depending on the mood I'm in that day.

We can't even get the trains to run. When they do run they cost three times as much as driving.

I don't think we're going to stop AI from our little island.

I don't think that it's possible to seperate diet from exercise meaningfully enough for most people.

The optimal diet for someone who is completely sedentary is going to be completely different to the optimal diet for someone who gets a reasonable amount of exercise, and it's not going to be a flat multiplier.

The protein needs of an athlete are completely different. Simple carbohydrates are processed differently if eaten prior to heavy exercise. That's just the basic stuff.

The best advice I've read is to just eat and move like a mature adult.

That doesn't necessarily mean never having a sweet or a beer, but it does mean prioritising full real meals over stuff like donuts, cakes, 50g sugar "coffee" drinks etc.

The UK has limits on things like this. Many London boroughs prohibit having more than two households consisting of three people without a licence.

Most people I know just ignore it, the whole concept is ridiculous.
