Don’t use Kafka (or PostgreSQL ) as a job queue. Can we just stop forcing this?

Kafka is an amazing event streaming platform.

I think with any database the solution is simply backups no? backups that preferably aren’t tied to the hosted solution at all.

Re:OpenBSD/ARM64 on Hetzner Cloud on Thursday September 21, 2023 @01:05PM (#37600611)
They didn't terminate my contract though, they just nullrouted my server. They even had the audacity at the end of the month to send me a bill.
Re:OpenBSD/ARM64 on Hetzner Cloud on Thursday September 21, 2023 @12:34PM (#37600153)
Do not host anything of importance on Hetzner. They'll gladly blackhole your server with zero recourse.
Re:OpenBSD/ARM64 on Hetzner Cloud on Thursday September 21, 2023 @12:33PM (#37600136)
They also do it when their system incorrectly flags traffic. They're the Paypal of web hosting. Stay far, far away.

> Companies will very successfully have their contracts enforced

Hetzner turned off all access to my paid server due to a false-positive on their netscan/DDOS (literally it was tailscaled doing a netcheck) protection and equally incompetent technical support staff.

Can I sue them for breach of contract and subsequent damages? I moved all my hosting off Hetzner as a result, but I'm still very disappointed in their actions.

It’s enabled thousands of indie devs and small studios to release games every year for the last decade. I think that’s pretty awesome. Unity, the game engine, has undoubtedly been a net positive, and now that torch is being passed onto others.

The company management just totally sullied all that goodwill in a week however.

It's strange how people lambast video games like they're a dangerous addiction but praise those who take time to read, watch cinema, or attend theatrical performances. We all consume our art in our own ways.

Maybe we should appreciate what was made by humans while it's still being produced.

This is such an absurd take. Do you really think startups lose runway because of the runtime performance of their code, and not failing to achieve PMF, overhiring, or spending too much on stupid techbro bullshit?

> And how many instances would be required if Go/Rust would have been used?

Zero. Because Shopify would have waited until Rust came out in 2015, instead of launching in 2006, and they would never have gotten off the ground and been another failed techbro startup that instead of getting shit done, bikeshedded over languages.

PHP and Ruby apps have generated far more revenues than all the Rust and Golang code combined.

This is mostly just how the Marine Corps fixes fuckups. LCpl Schmuckatelli gets one hooker pregnant and suddenly the entire battalion has their 96 canked, we’re all having 0700 safe-sex safety briefings Saturday morning, and Doc is handing out condoms.
Apache Druid’s architectural complexity is insane and has esoteric data schemas/formats.

Clickhouse runs as a single binary and is familiar sql/olap.

Just get started using anything but Unity.
Re:Unity's Self-Combustion Engine on Saturday September 16, 2023 @04:29PM (#37538413)
> Also, the Unity Asset store has so many great assets for me to use

The unity asset store isn’t tied to unity. Just extract the assets after purchase and do as you please.

Re:Unity's Self-Combustion Engine on Saturday September 16, 2023 @04:28PM (#37538402)
Unity has no incentive to solve this. They’ll push it onto developers to provide a deduplication in a clumsy process after they’ve already been billed for the month

Would their needs be met by a simple key-value store?
Nah, we used and paid for Unity because the licensing structure we signed on with made sense. They’re literally changing the terms on us in a way we cannot push back against. Games made years ago are subject to this new fee structure. Games which are no longer sold at the same nominal price and a massive existing install base who anytime they reinstall our game we get the privilege of paying Unity each time forever.
Re:Plex to block all servers hosted at Hetzner on Friday September 15, 2023 @11:24AM (#37524465)
Maybe they've added a fix to their detection system since? I quite literally have a netscan abuse report from them filled with the above UDP IP and port.
Re:Plex to block all servers hosted at Hetzner on Friday September 15, 2023 @11:22AM (#37524428)
I'm most familiar with AWS so I went back to a trusted (and far more expensive) platform where I didn't have to deal with amateurs literally turning off a paid service.

I may explore OVH in the future, nothing against them at all.

Re:Plex to block all servers hosted at Hetzner on Friday September 15, 2023 @01:55AM (#37519011)
tailscale runs a continuous netcheck to an unroutable IP (203.0.113.1:12345:UDP) [1] for whatever reason. This triggered Hetzner's ghetto-ass DDOS protection, thinking my server was compromised or I was netscanning the world. They sent me an email saying my server was compromised and I had 24hrs to remedy it.

I responded to the email and filled out this attestation form declaring that my server was not under attack, it was a false positive, and explained what they were seeing (not to mention it's an unroutable IP). They still null routed my server and refused to turn it back on, and their arrogant support told me there was no way I was in control of this server etc. They took my box offline during a peak user day, so I migrated to AWS and never looked back.

Don't do anything of importance on Hetzner. No wonder they only get people running pirated plex boxes.

Re:Plex to block all servers hosted at Hetzner on Friday September 15, 2023 @01:41AM (#37518925)
Hetzner is a garbage company when trying to host there as a legitimate SaaS creator. Stay far, far away from them. They disabled access to my server for running tailscale.
after your unity comments, you should probably refrain from commenting on anything at all related to gamedev.
Just because you're incapable of performing basic math or understanding risk factors, doesn't mean the rest of us are.
