This is a good point. Many people on this website have learnt to "dog-whistle" as an adaptation strategy. It doesn't change the substance.

Re:Quark – A software sketchbook for your projects

So was Kafka, but in the opposite direction. Results about Apache Kafka have seriously polluted the search results making it a lot harder to filter out pages not related to the novelist. Something is very wrong when the top result for "Kafka" is some software. Do you want to live in world where you kids google "Socrates" "Beethoven" and some software project shows up on top?
Re:Ask HN: Why is programming editing text?
on Friday July 19, 2019 @02:23PM (#20481180)
It's a good question and even if the text approach is superior we need a better reason than typically given.
I mean think about it. Suppose you want to communicate a JSON object to another programmer.
You can say: "the object consists of three key value pairs, the first key is named ... and its value is ..., the second ..."
Or you can say: "the object is that which you get from parsing the string that spells thus: curly bracket, space, double quote, ..."
Of course you'd prefer the former approach! Why then when we wish to communicate to a computer the same object, we adopt the "spelling approach"?

That's why he used the word "misleading". You are pointing out the title is strictly speaking true. But it can still mislead, especially by generating false expectations about the precise way in which it is true. I mean, that's how a lot of jokes work

There's a legitimate point to view according to which democracy and the right to vote don't really matter that much. At the end of the day people want to live meaningful, fulfilling lives, and there's little reason to think that living under an authoritarian regime per se has any impact on your life's meaning or affects one's ability to pursue intrinsically rewarding activities (unlike, say, poverty, which does pose a genuine obstacle, because it forces one to become someone else's machine for a big portion of one's life). If anything it may have a salutary effect by discouraging people from pursuing politics or engaging in political conversations (which is the unmeaningful activity par excellence, as additive as video games, while at the same time carrying far more danger because one tends not to feel guilty about wasting one's time on it).
Re:The Vietnam War Was Already Lost, but I Had to Go Anyway
on Monday July 15, 2019 @10:20AM (#20441059)
War does not happen because of any cold, calculating, sinister motive, it happens because of (fear of) boredom. Peace is boring, war is exciting, and gives people a sense of purpose (do you know that suicide rate is way down during war time?) and a chance to be part of something eternal. This is why history is to such a large extent the history of wars. Because that's what capture our morbid interest. This is why war, conflict and violence dominate movies and TVs and fiction.
The effect of boredom on a large scale in history is often underestimated. It is the main cause of war, revolutions, electoral surprises, etc.

At the end of the day people everywhere just want to live meaningful, fulfilling lives. Having the right to vote has no essential bearing on meaning. Most Americans try every means available to get out of jury duty, and last time I checked, turnout rates for NY and SF are below ten percent. If these sacred democratic rights were really so personally valuable to people, how come so many of them don't even bother to exercise them?
