How about, instead of removing it, this primary source piece of character witness story is added :-)
I got cobol fingers reading that
Small note, your strikethrough isn’t rendering, making it read like emphasis “that is not less rented” which probably isn’t what you intended :-)
That’s also what’s keeping me from connecting my WhatsApp to an AI - even readonly which would already be very powerful and useful.
Every now and again I sketch out an automatic iPhone backup over wireless workflow so I can extract the WhatsApp conversations once a day - which may be a good usability/tos-safety trade-off - but that may or may not be worth it.

I agree with you because I so thoroughly understand what mathematicians are saying. Expertise and knowledge developed over decades, previously unique and marketable, and status conferring, are threatened in their relevance because of ai.
I know this intimately because I identify, roughly, as a programmer first and security researcher second. Guess which two fields ai companies decided to specialize in first? Yes, the FML ones.
The intellectually rewarding part of my job/skills - the only reason I enjoyed them - are, not completely gone yet, but threatened. And shrinking. This is a very scary observation.
I know from ‘isomorphic situations’ lessons in history that fighting the tide is pointless. I have to decide intelligently how to respond. Easier said than done when your livelihood and identity are at stake.
For now I still have a job but I and everyone around me is worried. In a year, At best our jobs will be very different.
So yes I empathize with these mathematicians enormously.
As siblings have said, Prediction is not only about the future. For examples, see ML frameworks (sklearn comes to mind) where the inference method after training a classifier is called ‘predict.’
In science, a ‘prediction’ has special status because it can lend credence to a hypothesis if its implications (predictions) are borne out.
If it’s about the future, the precise verb is ‘forecast.’
We haven’t yet but we had then :-)
Oh no.. careful what you wish for! A clippy maximizer!!
Your post reads like it is refuting GP but I can’t unambiguously make out what you’re saying.
GP is saying the USA is increasing naked in its imperial attitude, crushing whoever is a threat to its imperialism. This is increasingly visible to its allies. In other words, those allies should start to act like the USA is the threat it is.
Are you refuting that?
Or are you implying that due to the past alliance with the USA, the allies should remain blind to the increasingly naked threat the USA is to its past allies and the rest of the world?
Can you please spell out your claim and supporting reasoning?
I agree with you. I think it’s even bad for the soul to be impolite to a model.
Because in context, the material obtained from that website is library genesis (libgen), a huge collection of (among other things) copyrighted books.
Isn’t it a bit soon to call Tailscale a giant corporation?

I think this is a Fermat joke :-)
Fittingly, he would be rolling that die
I think it’s the odd tone; an unearned imprecise flourish (poke). It could’ve been the text in a cartoon.
I wish, but I don’t think this qualifies as single thread performance. Cerebras is whole wafer computation though right? So you get the result sooner, but the same amount of computation has occurred, just with huge parallelism.
The Kobayashi Maru
(Though personally I don’t think giving a truly unsolvable problem in an interview without warning that this may be unsolvable is a reasonable test of anything, but a cruel experiment)
Pardon my nitpick, but producing solar panels isn’t emission free.
I’m not trying to be snarky, but.. I wouldn’t try to upgrade an answer from a stranger you can’t fully trust to an expert answer you can trust by asking more strangers who have all only read the same books and use the same system for summarizing the books.
Similarly, sometimes I have to manually validate the output of an ai tool, analyzed over a large text I can’t practically read and understand, and best way I’ve found is to ask the tool (or another ai) to ‘show your work,’ ie make it help me make the determination by showing places in the text I have to read to follow its reasoning. We can never trust another ai directly to assess the validity of another ai.
