Only because it's so expensive. You can buy a tablet cheaper than many of the larger lego kits.

The (electrified) lego train set was a solid product and didn't cost anywhere near what star wars lego does. Same for technics.

Graphs are great for data structures, not so great for visual navigation. As the nodes increase it becomes less comprehensible.
Re:Everyone should slow down AI development except for me on Sunday September 13, 2026 @04:59AM (#49681666)
At this point models are advancing way faster than we can figure out how to use them effectively. So having a generational advantage is not nearly as important as knowing how to use that advantage.

Even cutting back on meat can have an impact. Halving quantities in cooking etc. really is hardly noticeable.

Oh yeah, would love to see the resilience that would have prevented the Nepalese disaster

>I am still learning how to use it

I find it interesting that we are still talking in terms of modifying our behaviour to accommodate the tools. Surely the point of LLMs is not to "learn how to use it" but as an extension of our own unique capabilities - the most personalised tool in all of history.

That just sounds like greed. It's not enough to be winning, I need to be winning as much if not more than everyone else.
Re:I spent twenty years becoming good at the wrong game on Thursday August 20, 2026 @10:29AM (#49375098)
Academia is not a waste of time just because it doesn't translate into "productivity" and wealth. Some people enjoy the pursuit of knowledge, and find great meaning in it.

Increasingly the arts are being defunded based on a similar argument, and humanity as a whole is worse off because of it.

Everything is opinion. A shared reality is just where opinions coincide.

lol, I hope most coders are not this jaded.

Re:Nothing works and everyone is euphoric on Friday July 24, 2026 @06:48AM (#49033680)
I think it's fair to say that AI amplifies our abilities, but it needs to be in the hands of people that know what they are doing.

If developers are producing garbage to begin with, chances are they still produce garbage just at an accelerated rate.

Re:The Internet I Grew Up with Doesn't Exist Anymore on Wednesday July 01, 2026 @08:57AM (#48745972)
Isn't that a bit elistist to say everything changed when more people joined? The point is not the consumers of the Internet but the producers are what changed it - primarily with advertising and walled gardens.
The real answer is you should never build your business on ANY specific model. As usual avoid lock-in and switch when you need to.

It's a commodity in the same way that making music is a commodity (i.e. using production tools to make it sound good). But music today is so much more generic and boring than it used to be.
Requiring parents to police their child's every move is not going to end well.
Who is this "they" you speak of?

We have age verification for all kinds of things that can harm minors. Most of them have adequate penalties for breach such that operators of said harms ensure they comply (checks for ID when selling alcohol, entry to over-18s pubs/clubs, etc.)

There's nothing sinister going on here, just attempts to prevent social/mental harm to minors.

an age ban for meat would be interesting.. :-) all the rest have them so why not social media which clearly does harm to minors.

I think that's a lack of gravity. According to wikipedia antigravity is in fact impossible (under known laws of physics).

Re:Does coding with LLMs mean more microservices? on Monday April 06, 2026 @06:27AM (#47659067)
Why arbitrarily invent new meanings (for microservices) and new words (microlibraries) when there are already many adequate ways to describe modular, componentized architecures?

A totally valid and important point but it has been diluted by talking about microservices rather than importance of modular architectures for agent-based coding.

Re:You Are How You Act on Monday October 27, 2025 @08:18AM (#45720120)
This is exactly what he is proposing, because it is more "useful". But it hardly gives you agency to be someone you are inherently not.

Authenticity is what we lack in the modern world and he is totally fine with that.

But you aren't just asking for edits to your code, right? Copilot will actively suggest code completion as you type. This is the real benefit over chat as it's like pair programming.

That, and the way it generates commit comments, I don't think I will write another commit message even again.

They went all-in on Teams just before the start of COVID, and MS don't typically support multiple overlapping products like Google do (although the number of task management products may be a counter-argument to that).
Re:The Anti-Capitalist Case for Standards on Friday May 02, 2025 @02:06AM (#43866634)
I tend to think standards are more about interoperability at the interface level - which doesn't specifically exclude innovation in non-interfacing aspects. So in that sense I don't think standards are synonymous with LCD.

Regardless of the implementation challenges, the theory is sound and that is the point of the article I believe.
Re:The Friendship Recession: The Lost Art of Connecting on Saturday April 26, 2025 @11:26AM (#43804441)
>The other challenge is finding people, especially as you get older. I've posted this before, but as you get older you really need to seek out established communities. Sports, trivia nights, things of that nature. Something where you can hop in and immediately meet 5+ people. Then you need to show up, over and over. That's how friendships form.

The article follows similar lines, but I feel "forcing friendships" just leads to shallow "friendships" with little meaning. In fact so many modern friendships are sustained by small talk, which Carl Jung derides as meaningless..
