Yeah, but then the comment was making sweepingly generalised statements based off personal experiences.

Your one piece of anecdata is not proof of anything at the population level.

Please stop with the fallacy that what appears to be true for you is also true for everyone else.

edit: I weep for the ignorance present here. I may be done with HN.

Re:Why an abundance of choice is not the same as freedom on Sunday October 19, 2025 @01:17PM (#45635923)
In my view a superabundance of irrelevant choices blinds most folks to the lack of more politically important choices which are denied to most.

Perhaps the contemporary fight back against 'woke' is really about the important and empowering choices in life being denied to too many?

America is Sliding Towards Autocracy - FTFY

How does this ruling affect the company's right to free speech in the US? It's a fine for refusing to comply with a law in the UK; any sufficiently competent organisation could choose to comply with censorship/age gating in one country and avoid those restrictions in all others.

Hello, have you ever heard of democracy?
I think that's just Americans tbh.

Just because they've blocked UK users doesn't mean they aren't making revenue from advertising operating via the UK.

He's the ultimate product of a dysfunctional civil service; what else could be expected other than dis-empowering people, ignoring democracy, and increasing bureaucratic power?

Don't banks demand your National Insurance number already in order to open an account?
If nanny state keep bailing comapnies out, how will they learn to stand on their own two feet? /s
Re:Hard Work Is a Virtue on Wednesday September 24, 2025 @05:57AM (#45358220)
Way to ignore burnout and depression, bro. These things tend to happen when people work hard without suitable 'reward'.

Hard work by itself isn't always a virtue.

I like the fact that it attempts to provide an alternative narrative to the artificial medicalisation of 'mental illness'.

Maybe it isn't totally factually accurate but it has enough truth to me that it represents a small flicker of hope in what is too often a chronically invalidating world.

If you're well off economically, then maybe.

But outside of the freedom in how you spend whatever money you are able to 'earn', I'd argue that the Western model of life (i.e. work) is pretty damn authoritarian. It's entirely possible that people in the past felt that they had more freedom than they realistically do now.

If the broader economic system wasn't based on what is essentially theft, security wouldn't be as necessary as it is.

Yeah, the law still exists. Apple just successfully managed to refuse to comply with a request made under it.

Re:Try and on Monday August 11, 2025 @12:50PM (#44866458)
What I'm saying is that people in certain regions actually say "should of" instead of "should've".

And yes, there can be and often is a difference between saying "should've" and "should of".

Re:Try and on Sunday August 10, 2025 @03:32PM (#44857590)
> Do you mean "should've"? That's a common contraction of "should" and "have." In many American accents, the difference between "should've" and "should have" is negligible, and will sound like "should of" even though it isn't.

I think they specifically meant "should of" which is a colloquial form of "should've" in a number of places in the UK.

I went to school with a large number of people who would write "I should of done X instead of Y". In fact I'm pretty sure I made that "mistake" a number of times growing up.

Re:Try and on Sunday August 10, 2025 @03:28PM (#44857559)
I think "Try and X" means "Try to X and do X" which means to my mind means to attempt and, upon success of the trial, to complete X.

"I’ll try and eat the salad." could be expressed as "I'll try eating some of the salad and, if possible, finish eating it."

Sounds a little tone deaf/hollow to me.

I'd encourage people to find ways to look after themself so that they don't feel like they have to keep stubbornly plodding on.

And is it going to harvest the free blackberries I'm enjoying when I go on a walk?

I don't think so.

Welcome to the sticking plaster economy. This may be the economic orthodoxy, but it completely ignores the root causes of poor productivity - and ultimately leads to the state of xenophobia you're seeing today in Britain.
Dear reader, the women were the creeps.
I am not sure victim blaming is really an issue given this applies to the hyper-rational world of corporations.

One of the problems with victim blaming is that it typically ignores power dynamics at play and blames the powerless. I think the coop has the resources to be able to stand on its own two feet and take appropriate security measures.

I think you're missing the point by a mile. The point isn't some tedious debate over grammar; it's about the choice of language that perpetuates the idea that suicide is a tragedy that happens passively 'to people' in some kind of tragic, medicalised, incomprehensible way which is severed from any socio-political context.

In this case, these people were driven to suicide. I would argue that those responsible for the Horizon scandal are guilty of at minimum manslaughter of these poor people.
