The public is catching on to how sucky it is: https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2022/jun/22/amazon-wo...
They’ve rug pulled on users who got wise. Now on B2B.

Sundar is a sus CEO. Ballmer of the decade, knows how “Google works”, but was riding high on money printer going brr. He does not seem to have a clear vision forward with the cheap cash tap turned off.

Re:Elon Musk’s texts shatter the myth of the tech genius on Sunday October 02, 2022 @03:51PM (#33059523)
So we could let them keep their stocks and not trade them for dollars; they own 100% of their company and the public is no longer obliged to acknowledge outsiders have ephemeral value beyond their direct contribution to society.

Demanding we believe in ephemeral property is spoken tradition not an immutable truth of reality. I am not saying we have to redistribute their wealth; I’m saying we stop idolizing wealth. Especially when tax policy and direct cash infusions from government is keeping these guys afloat. It’s not free market trade. Look at their tune change as soon as free money is shut off with interest rate changes; it’s not them it’s political policy. They’re not actually rich.

Re:Can we make flying “Green”? on Saturday October 01, 2022 @11:41PM (#33052616)
Unless the entire production pipeline, from mining to machining parts and tools involved in making a plane, no.

Planes literally in the air are not the only source of green house gas connected to flying planes.

I mean do you seriously believe office life is some immutable law of nature and without it humanity will stop being social?

You have heard of neighbors, yes? Just had “block party” with my wfh neighbors.

I learned a couple are architects, one is in biology science, etc etc.

Far more diverse conversation than parroting IT jargon all week.

Re:Elon Musk’s texts shatter the myth of the tech genius on Saturday October 01, 2022 @12:42PM (#33047925)
So “think of the greater good” hokum?

You have the spoken traditions memorized, that’s for sure.

Re:Elon Musk’s texts shatter the myth of the tech genius on Saturday October 01, 2022 @11:56AM (#33047522)
Good point. Why enrich them beyond other human beings? One of billions is a much more reasonable view of who they are.
What’s this have to do with being ruled by rent seekers? They don’t have an absolute plan, but Powell has been projecting his goals for months; stop the rise of wages. Deflate asset prices. That sure sounds like a plan. A vague one, but a plan. Opioid addiction was an intentional plan given the evidence at various trials.

The economy and where possible, the outcomes, are intentional. Cushion “the right people” with free money so they can ride the long hard dip. Gamble with everyone else. It’s all part of the spoken traditions so we readily accept it. The lords of finance demand sacrifice!

Essentially the government is setting market values through mathematical indirection the general public cannot grasp.

https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=33031466

Basically, fu Main Street, got mine. I wonder if they believe the meta-awareness the internet has provided will just go away if they crash tech/social media? That’s where all the progressive undesirables work, after all.

Past pols convinced people “trickle down” was sincere economics, not a bawdy joke. That Reaganomic funneling of wealth to the top was for their own good, and the public now blames modern progressives. A pols dedication to double speak is commendable.

Yeah in the US we’d never curtail industrial food profit to overhaul the state of store shelves being full of easily consumed crap packaged in plastic waste of enormous energy and material cost.

The health side effects are not the only outcome of concern with our eating habits.

Re:Why “go nuts, show nuts” doesn’t work in 2022 on Friday September 30, 2022 @12:17PM (#33036856)
I am a “personal cognitive freedom across contexts should be protected, full stop.” For example, that means opt-in social healthcare should be a thing that resources are provided for. A minority in charge saying “no” to the public “opting in” spending agency on providing free healthcare is living under a police state mindset; forcing poor who have no real choice into illness, empowering death is freedom! It’s a twisted joke to not care as a society and say we individually chose this; individually we’re beholden to the group think, how neighborly of you all. That we should be expected to spend our time only on profitable (a form of political correctness serving official economic policy ) application of agency is authoritarian, and conveniently coupled to maintenance of financiers past investments.

Fascism was alive and well in Yerp before WW2 started in the form of old aristocrats who lorded over the soon to be new aristocrats, who had yet to claim total control of public institutions. So with that in mind the “solution” is public control of life preserving logistics networks, and tribal, de-centralized DIY social media for fluffing our imaginations. Ogling punsters, memes is hardly a universal preference.

Decentralized filter bubbles are getting easier and easier to host; Docker and k8s via private Wireguard networks anyone?

There’s a lot of chatter about new protocols needed for decentralizing. Other than email, I have been self hosting a long list of personal services via Docker for years. I am shocked other hacker types are bought into all the service subscriptions. New protocols will be taken over by old social forces.

Tech workers have been told to dog food products as if they’re pets. As a society we once made shopping at the company store illegal. Monopoly busting is about avoiding a minority guiding species agency at scale.

Re:Nordstream: An Accident? on Friday September 30, 2022 @10:25AM (#33035267)
The opinion this is cheap talk might be a shitty one?

Gas line works fine for years, suddenly during regional conflict it goes tits up?

A dying country whose leadership seems intent on putting it out of its misery sending its potential fathers to a meat grinder, a history of stupid big picture choices, angry at the world for not letting it conquer it might partake in environmental sabotage.

It’s a lot less on the nose than nukes; if we can’t have imperialist nation state, no one can!

The holocaust is proof of human indifference to each other’s existence. What do a bunch of old turds care about intentional environmental destruction?

I know there have been gamers like this for years but in this case 2 of the 4 years were during a mandatory isolate at home public health crisis. It’s possible this was actually a positive escape to help cope.

Personally I’m not attached to digital ephemera. I’ve already lost more save games and files of one type of content over another to be used to it. I’d call the clingy-ness the real issue. Others have to put in a bunch of work to manage this persons figurative video game identity?

I maintain that this Fed tightening is manufactured consent to be ruled by an aristocratic class in charge of government. Rent seekers in their twilight years convinced future agency must directly build upon their efforts by propping up their wealth working in the industries they own all the valuable real land and infra capital.

A minority has monopolized agency and insulated themselves from real work using a historical basis that there’s always been bean counters who divvy up public production, take 5 for themselves and give 1 to the next person in the public line. It’s a hard job being stingy, after all.

It’s government quota on free trade abstracted into technical jargon and made unfalsifiable.

Re:Instagram permanently disables Pornhub account on Wednesday September 28, 2022 @09:11PM (#33015209)
Big corp foisting social agency change on people has biological effects. It rather highlights the lack of free agency and self determination our society is built on.

Go ahead and be academic but you’re one of billions, aka too insignificant to matter by your own tools of measure; there’s a reason the mathematicians of old warned against the application of such cognitive tools to societies needs. Statistical insignificance is a philosophy that can be thrown right back in your face.

Re:Instagram permanently disables Pornhub account on Wednesday September 28, 2022 @07:14PM (#33014416)
I think the idea is disruption of online livelihoods comes along with unseen and ignored externalities. Loss of online exposure will push online sex workers to make up loss of income to less safe sex work environments.

Agreed. They were more frank about it back in the day.

If everyone has enough money the masses can create/buy assets to capitalize on rather than merely be worker bees.

Re:Be critical or be corrupted on Friday September 23, 2022 @08:54PM (#32958794)
Cable news has government officials on spewing government talking points all night. That’s government propaganda. Suuure it’s not “official” but wtf does that matter when it embeds itself in our inner monologues?

Corporations that own cable news and are given all the money with no strings by the government; hardly an Obama era shift.

Making it illegal is meaningless.

Re:Be critical or be corrupted on Friday September 23, 2022 @12:45PM (#32954227)
The US relies on private propaganda to normalize attitudes to its goals. Given how chummy politicians and “journalists” and corporate owners are off camera it’s laughable to think there is a real separation of power.

Our biology evolved for thousands of years before language was invented. To suggest our language influences our biology is nonsensical. Our biology influences language. Propaganda is all about setting a biological mood not embedding a specific chant. Media had been stoking the right moods until the internet enabled an unfiltered emotional meta-mind.

They intentionally wrap news in titillating music and graphics. It’s all research based effort in the fields of behavioral economics, public relations, etc.

An educated minority are leveraging that education against the majority to optimize for themselves. “Because that’s the history of our society!”

Google works on interesting things? I guess to PhDs into ML.

They scrapped cutting edge R&D and became a one-trick ad-pushing pony. When the companies trajectory has been away from interesting ideas into ad laden messes and Gmail UX refreshes, the perks are all people show up for. I could work on shoving 10 ads in a YT video? Sign me up!

I question whether Sundar is a good CEO. Google succeeded given the broader economic shift to tech, not his leadership. Pedaling nostalgia for a time when growth was easy suggests to me he has no idea how to iterate forward in interesting ways.

Re:Censorship by big tech at the behest of the U.S. government? on Thursday September 22, 2022 @07:09PM (#32945824)
Fear and group think have not gone anywhere.

Society is “group think”. Try paying rent in bottle caps, and telling your boss to go fuck themselves when they ask for something. Fear of unemployment and homelessness make that unlikely.

City to city, coast to coast, group think and fear keep us from having serious conversations about consumerisms impact on the environment; don’t touch my capitalism click clack

The difference is that’s group think you’ve been conditioned since birth to believe is as immutable as the orbit of the planets.

If we all “group thought” more bicycles and fewer cars were more appropriate that’s what we’d produce. It’s unjustifiable belief to make it sound as if you’re a truly free agent unaffected by group think and fear of alternatives.

Re:Remote workers are wasting their time proving they’re working on Thursday September 22, 2022 @05:24PM (#32944814)
Write it into the contract daily deliverables are not the goal which is software that aligns with the original agreed upon design/spec/goals.

Also it’s illegal to not pay at least minimum wage for “piecemeal work”.

I refuse to take hourly contract work. Half now, half upon delivery. Customers need to put some real skin in the game.

Re:Remote workers are wasting their time proving they’re working on Thursday September 22, 2022 @11:58AM (#32940783)
If all you’re going to do is walk the happy path the marketing necessity makes sense; you’re a bit player in a crowded cottage industry. Your startup probably doesn’t need to exist as 9 others are doing similar enough data crunching.

Real talk; open source ML is on the way that will end digital content creation jobs. Intelligent deployment of infra is here and will get better; bye devops/secops.

If you’re suckling at the teet of the past you’re missing out on a lot of cool projects. Stable diffusion is just the start of smart open source software. I’d reconsider your path altogether if you’re envisioning a long career in software and avoiding cross training.

Re:Remote workers are wasting their time proving they’re working on Thursday September 22, 2022 @10:36AM (#32939366)
Most bosses are baby sitting. Maybe I’ve been incredibly unlucky but I have never had a boss in tech who produced anything but meeting invites.

If there are teams that need fat trimmed it’s HR, PM, and management. THE tool necessary to check if software eng are at work exists; source control. Rather than having managers do data entry in Jira, read your source control logs into unified place for them; Google sheets, or some dashboard. Their data entry jobs are not producing business functionality. IT is not the cost center anymore but the backbone of business.

I can manage all my HR needs from a slick website now. I have not connected with an HR person since I was hired into my current gig 3 years ago.

Given how simple it is to build complex software stacks now, the endless hiring of middle management has just increased the gamification of office work. They have little productive work to do and engage, unintentionally maybe, in distracting efforts to appear on top of things.

Frankly; who cares if past orgs used to in-office life can’t survive this. That’s a free market. Managers keep chanting “disrupt!” and similar shallow sound bites. Keep following orders; disrupt away the unproductive sycophants who went into tech management the last 10-15 because of the boom itself, with zero ability to produce.

Even Powell has said they are realizing how little they know about how inflation “works”.

Claiming I am uninformed because I don’t recite the spoken traditions that even the expert in charge admits to not fully understanding is just regurgitating memes from memory; you don’t come off well informed, but like a skipping record.

They don’t have an incentive to NOT keep people poor either. They don’t really care since they’re going ahead anyway with policy they admit will hurt households; deny it again, please. I need a laugh.

The outcome will be one of making cars and homes harder for poorer people to buy; Powell admitted that today and at every other rate hike. He’s testing “what the market will bear”.

Human biology rules us, not social principles hashed out on paper. See my comment history. The result will be clear; haves will be able to afford buying up assets as prices come down. Have nots will be priced out.

Don’t forget too our Congress refuses to deviate from our social history. The Senate was described by Madison as a firewall to protect the opulent minority from the majority. You can carry on that’s “not how it works” all you want. But “on the ground” the result is clear.

Yes. Powell is on record saying he wants the public to save and not trade on the market. He wants bonds to go up. He wants salaries to stop going up. If everyone is flush in assets from having cash to spend it fucks up the game for establishment elites.

He’s keeping the public out of the way of elites. Banks are raising savings account rates to keep cash stashed. VCs are scaling back. Prices on say, homes will crash, rates will be too high for average people, elites build property management portfolios and expand their rent seeking.

The recent era of spread the wealth has been put on pause while the asset class shores up public agency that was getting away from it by creating too many elites. If everyone is an elite the current elites have no power. That’s the simple game they’re playing, leveraging technical indirection to obfuscate.

Greed seems to explain it easily enough.

The macro-economy is solely for the wealthy and when they need a billion or more to see a return on a billion or more, shrinkflation and price increases go up; hard to make a billion back on long time scales at 2010 prices.

I’m not saying they intentionally operate on that philosophy. I’m saying reliance on data trends means they prioritize responding to data regardless of the externalities to the masses.

Only the rich can afford assets so assets are priced for the rich.

The zeitgeist of our culture; of course you didn’t MEAN to be negative, here try again.

No, no; I most certainly did mean to suggest you should stop showing me this persons channel. Not because I hate the person but because I don’t want a shit “AI” that’s feeding me what Google makes the best margins on.

They privatized it by passing technical propaganda research to universities who modeled it into behavioral economics, marketing, advertising.

Social media is built with such research in mind.

Society will never stop trying to wrap a big fuzzy one size fits all blanket around everyone’s thoughts. We intentionally manipulate biology that religion stumbled upon.

A philosophy of “oh well there is this separation of powers written down on paper” does not stop graft, nepotism. Tribalism is innate to human biology; words on paper don’t just shut our bodies innate traits off. Thinking a law prevents intentional propagandizing is quaint and naive. They just call the same behavior and mechanics “behavioral economics” and viola; it may have all the mechanics of propaganda, but trust us, it’s not propaganda.

When you can just point at a law degree as unfalsifiable proof a contract must be legit what is the layman to do?

It could be argued the reason the law is successful (like many other “successful” social frameworks in history) is the ignorance of the masses.

High minded gossip, hyping story of forever human life and expansion is a human tradition.
