But Terry T said I have to drive or die.

Or has he changed his mind again.

Re:Mathematics has changed. Let's act like it on Sunday November 01, 2026 @03:53PM (#50329757)
Not really. I feel sad for the people who miss them.
Re:Mathematics has changed. Let's act like it on Sunday November 01, 2026 @03:52PM (#50329745)
It's well in the realm of obvious, but possibly outside the realm of personal experience on your part.

I think pointing at Greenland for a start and asking you to think about the problem for a bit will lead to the same coherent view on the matter.

Re:Mathematics has changed. Let's act like it on Sunday November 01, 2026 @03:25PM (#50329421)
That is plainly rubbish.
Re:Mathematics has changed. Let's act like it on Sunday November 01, 2026 @03:24PM (#50329413)
No.
Re:Mathematics has changed. Let's act like it on Sunday November 01, 2026 @03:23PM (#50329404)
He's not out of the woods yet.
That will only happen until they step on the wrong toes.

I can't wait until they disrupt something a cartel or the mafia are in on.

Re:Mathematics has changed. Let's act like it on Sunday November 01, 2026 @03:17PM (#50329330)
There are many more places you can't drive. I've walked to quite a few of them.

That analogy holds too.

Re:Mathematics has changed. Let's act like it on Sunday November 01, 2026 @02:48PM (#50329047)
How you get somewhere is important and tools change how you get there.

You can drive 1000 miles and arrive at the destination on the highway quickly.

Or you can take the slow road and walk. You discover unrelated things, make new relationships, see the scenery, listen and smell what is around you and have time to contemplate things which may or not be related.

This particular tool economy robs us of all these things in the rush to the destination.

I'd sacrifice "progress" a little for some of the better bits of humanity.

Do you let your suppliers run your business? Fuck no.
Wait until they block what your business does.
I don’t really give a shit. The real problem is they put much more attention on Palestine than the UK.

We need the Middle East out of our political system full stop. All of it.

Back to Minitel it is!

Cloud bad! Vault big!
I talk to our risk lead and he was also weirdly oblivious as well. The whole company is dependent on them not going down the shitter. Surely that's a tangible risk?

I'm indifferent either way myself. It's just shocking the amount of ignorance.

Oh so these incidents are why we have regulated markets! Who’d have thought?

Indeed.

If you want deniability no one should be doing business with you.

Re:AI Isn't Replacing SREs. It's Deskilling Them on Friday October 30, 2026 @01:22PM (#50307150)
Our lot were. It's like they're now a 5 year old that has been exposed to Italian brain rot for 6 months. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DaJ0JAsJEAc

Yeah don't start me on using the cloud. I am well aware of that concern.
Re:AI Isn't Replacing SREs. It's Deskilling Them on Friday October 30, 2026 @12:16PM (#50306068)
I am more worried that an LLM company could destroy your entire company by removing access or losing enough cash to go under.
Re:AI Isn't Replacing SREs. It's Deskilling Them on Friday October 30, 2026 @12:12PM (#50306002)
Yeah that. Watched our lot spending 2 hours using Claude to debug shit that was blindingly obvious if they actually didn't go to Claude first.

If Claude goes down or stops existing when we go down, we're fucked.

Re:Patrick Stewart has died on Friday October 30, 2026 @07:22AM (#50302467)
That’s because the usual dickheads you work with have been filtered out by starfleet academy.

Need more starfleet academy.

I’m using that. That’s exactly what this stuff becomes. At some point it becomes unmanageable for who is looking after it.

Definitely the better CPU. You could write position independent code on it for a start.
Re:StackOverflow now gets fewer than 1000 questions a month on Thursday October 29, 2026 @11:52AM (#50291044)
Honestly I bought a 6502 (BBC Micro) after I got tired of the Z80.
Not sure why the hell you'd trust Proton in the first place? What they sell is some loose guarantees slapped on a completely insecure protocol with many footguns lying around.

Now we know it's run by a dick too.

They sold fear. That was all.

Re:StackOverflow now gets fewer than 1000 questions a month on Thursday October 29, 2026 @11:01AM (#50290220)
At least you haven’t spent two weeks in AI strategy meetings with people who have used AI to come up with a strategy for AI to implement because if we don’t, our single competitor will win the AI arms race.

Our products are both mature, entirely finished, fully deterministic and the last attempt at this using the same approach just burned all the money that was spent instead of generating any new revenue.

Re:StackOverflow now gets fewer than 1000 questions a month on Thursday October 29, 2026 @07:35AM (#50287395)
Hey I assembled that code on paper on my home made computer and I was in Alan Turing's office the other day!

(not even joking)

Re:StackOverflow now gets fewer than 1000 questions a month on Thursday October 29, 2026 @06:49AM (#50287037)
As someone in the "some of you older programmers may have used Z80 assembly" territory, I find that hilarious.
Re:OpenAI's agents talked to each other through the CPU Cache on Thursday October 29, 2026 @06:45AM (#50287006)
As someone who designed heavily compartmentalised and isolated systems, nope.
