News for hackers. Stuff that matters.

Indeed. Then again "the news" is well known for carefully editorialising things and conflating unverified sources as facts on and off. General journalistic standards have been compromised because there's a race to get the information in front of people faster than social media and it is now seen as ok to correct it later. This is mostly online though. Print and televised media is usually not as real time.

Everything is a shit show.

I think it would be safer to remove all political posts from social media (both sides) as policy. There is a massive propaganda war on both sides and all it does is amplify sentiment, create further division, hurt more people and compromise security over time.

The press are bad enough at coming up with verified claims from the right people. Social media is 1000x worse.

Of course our current American social media dictators are pretty lax on doing anything positive for society as a whole while it benefits them.

Had no problems anywhere in the UK in recent years on 4G and I've been all over the place.

4G has been incredibly reliable for me. Even on a £10/month SIM only thing, I was up a volcano in the middle of nowhere in Iceland and able to make calls.

Re:Using Git Offline on Tuesday January 09, 2024 @11:47AM (#38928311)
Most of the people I work with can barely tell the difference between git and github.
I think the point is the signal to noise ratio is poor. But it's less bad than everywhere else I find.
Re:How to mod any lens for anamorphic bokeh on Tuesday January 09, 2024 @07:31AM (#38925367)
To be fair we were doing this in the 80s with crappy M42 lenses and slightly less scientific method. Pentax 50mm one that came with your GDR clunker could be pushed pretty hard if you were on a budget.

The main reason for this though was to make the bokeh look like it was from a more expensive lens.

Sometimes we do gold plating intentionally because the new tasks are stupid or will compromise the business and we’re trying to make them go away.
Conversely my iPhone 13 Pro was taken all round the world and been soaked through, frozen and dropped tens of times in snow and a river. The clear TPU case looked like a water puzzle on a regular basis.

Apple replaced the battery in it last week without a whimper and I expect they would do the same in the future.

If I did this to my MacBook they probably would not. Which is the point.

Race to the bottom propelled by the current fad here we come.

Duolingo has been completely fucking useless for me compared to spending a few hours in the country in question though. It's pretty much HOW DO I GO LEFT AT THE BAKERY level of teaching.

In software this is a reboot or an apology to a client.

In aerospace this is dead people.

Re:Apple Starts Sending 'Batterygate' Settlement Payments on Sunday January 07, 2024 @05:30PM (#38905862)
That’s literally what they have done. My iPhone 15 tells me the battery install date, the cycle count, the remaining life estimate and what performance profile it is using which can be overridden.

That's two no thank you's in one product!
Rebuilding this turd with that. Thanks for the info :)
It used to be the OS I want. They cut the 10 years LT support to 5 years.
I’m not even remotely surprised about this.

I think this was done with good intent but could have been handled better. But you can't satisfy anyone these days. All that happens is a YT celebrity does a hit job on Apple and everyone dogpiles on.

Just yesterday I was speaking to someone who was getting fed up of her iPhone 14. She said she'd had it less than a year and it'd been terrible, charged really slowly andw ent slow and she was "going to buy a fucking samsung next time". She let me have a look at it. It was in low power mode and she was using a poundland 5W charger on a chewed up piece of shit cable. Charged it up of my PD powerbank and got her to order an Anker PD charger and a good cable on Amazon and explained what power save mode is.

That's the average user. And when they go looking for solutions they find idiots on YouTube with whole channels devoted to shitting on particular vendors because it's divisive, they get clicks and make money.

On top of this, the woman spends a fortune servicing her Mercedes but will only spend £1 each on a replacement charger and cable. What do you think will happen when her battery craps out?

If Apple tell people that their battery needs replacing some fucker will fire up a video with APPLE GOUGING PEOPLE FOR NEW BATTERIES. Fuck, it's disposable, it's maintenance no different to your car. Take it to the garage and get it swapped out.

Ok wow I have my mother's old one in the cupboard. Will have to clean it up and test it.
I dunno their mice are ok. I've got a G203 on the PC and an MX Master 3 on the mac and they are both excellent. The G203 is the best mouse I've used since the MS optical mice.

Only downside is you have to turn all the RGB lights crap off on the G203.

Exactly that!
Re:The Everything NPM Package on Sunday January 07, 2024 @06:21AM (#38900305)
We have almost buried those.
Re:The Everything NPM Package on Saturday January 06, 2024 @06:49PM (#38896834)
Personally I would like it and the ecosystem to just cease to exist overnight. Nothing on earth has caused so much pain, misery, suffering and agony, apart from possibly PHP.

Our devops guys scream from the seething pain whenever the have to debug some pile of shit that decides it won't build unless all the runes are aligned precisely and all the RAM in the universe is available on the build runners. And pushing this to the developers results in importing more packages thus adding to the burning tyre fire.

And after several hours of builds and 9000 layers of packages you wake up one morning and in that 50 meg chunk of javascript that is excreted from the process, someone managed to inject a "Slava Ukraini!" banner into your web app.

Some people feel validated by causing or supporting moral outrage on behalf of others as it feels like they are safeguarding them.

I'm just happy some people are keeping the yiff community in mind :)

Same here. Airbus every time.

Also I know a 737 MAX pilot who had time on A320 and he said fly A320 if you can.

Re:Everything will be alright in Iceland on Friday January 05, 2024 @10:55AM (#38880404)
According to OECD Health at a Glance 2023, Iceland is the highest per-capita consumer of tranquilizers. YMMV.

I did go there last year and I'm not sure I'd want to live there. Nice place to visit though and mostly nice people (apart from the large Ford truck driving psychopaths)

Re:Cleaning up my 200GB iCloud with some JavaScript on Friday January 05, 2024 @07:38AM (#38878475)
Actually I may be wrong there. I was on 200Gb with Apply Family but have stuck 50GB on top of that for £0.99 month.

I can only swap that out for a 200GB increment. This is weird because I'm sure you used to be able to do that.

Re:Cleaning up my 200GB iCloud with some JavaScript on Friday January 05, 2024 @07:08AM (#38878286)
You can chuck as many 50GB increments on your 200GB if you need it.
The company's vision as a whole is to throw some effort at everything and write off what turns out crap. Everyone I knew was on board with that. I was not. That's not a vision, that's distributed incompetence.
I worked at Microsoft. I left because they weren't like me.
Oh completely. I'm also 100% fed up of my tax money being spent on stupid attempts to unfuck it.
I really wish they would just piss off with this. I have found no actual real world life improvements on the windows ecosystem from the integration of copilot at all. Anything that it has attempted to do actually removed the determinism I had in the existing process or did something to piss me off. It's like having Mr Clippy shoved down your throat constantly and being told it's a good thing without a single use case making sense for me at all. Literally I can't think of an actual use for it and I've tried. It's like pair programming with a chimp.

I'm still bitter that the menu key seems to have disappeared from the keyboards recently.
