Touchscreens on vertical screens are ridiculous.

Especially if they don't even have stylus support

So, what's the go-to client for Nvidia Shield Pro now? I've tried Jellyfin and it has a lot of trouble with fancy anime subtitles (forgot the extension)

Dunno. I prefer the mod+arrow keys or terminal shortcuts to 4 new keys
Re:Why don't more developers "use the platform"? on Monday October 05, 2026 @04:48AM (#49962264)
There's also no virtualized list, which has been the defacto standard for the past 20 years in every other platform.

This forces devs to use userland hacks which break accessibility and lower performance.

Re:Why don't more developers "use the platform"? on Monday October 05, 2026 @04:46AM (#49962253)
Because "the platform" more often than not, sucks ass. Web components are ass. Writing vanilla HTML is ass. Writing vanilla JS is ass. Vanilla CSS is ass (albeit getting better). DOM primitives are ass, as are the DOM APIs.

Is the solution to throw more React + Tailwind slop at the problem? Absolutely not. The solution is to _KNOW_ the platform and pick the best tools suited for each problem instead of chasing some form of academic purity.

So, I'm holding the AI wrong is what you're telling me
Re:I'm Tired of the AI Tone on Sunday September 20, 2026 @07:44AM (#49774836)
I'm sad that the em dash has been appropriated by clankers. It was a part of my tone, which I used often in writing.
The fuck does "agentically" mean
Re:Anecdotally, Programmers Dislike "Reduce" on Wednesday September 16, 2026 @06:10PM (#49733731)
Nah. Reduce is less performant and less readable than a regular loop. In my anecdotal experience, only people who want to appear smart and minimize the number of characters prefer reduce.

Re:iPhone Duo on Thursday September 10, 2026 @06:41AM (#49641441)
I'd like to have one of these devices once the prices get a bit more normal. I remember paying 400€ for an iPhone 4 when it came out, a flagship phone at the time by all metrics. Adjusted for inflation, that's about 600€.

Flagship prices have now reached the 1000€ mark, with marginal upgrades, and in many cases actual downgrades.

There is no world in which I can justify paying 2x-4x the flagship price for a device fulfilling a fundamentally similar purpose.

For a different comparison, a 14" MacBook Pro costs that much.

Re:The Browser's Main Thread Is Expensive on Thursday September 03, 2026 @05:37AM (#49547886)
There's an RFC or two to spawn threads so I'm looking forward to that. The current way of workers + messages is tedious as hell.

This is great stuff. Gaussian splatting is really proving to be a great format, even an intermediate one.
This might be very useful for bonding PTFE and aluminium on cookware if it ends up being food safe.
Re:Jellyfin founder Andrew leaves team on Tuesday July 21, 2026 @05:56AM (#48990164)
The media player app for android set top boxes like nvidia shield handles different subtitle formats and advanced settings much better than the jellyfin one, especially for anime subs.
Now we know why the new AirPods will have cameras!

I don't engage with the "firehose of falsehood" types of articles as it's a losing battle. This guy's is a high school teacher whose side-gig is churning out pro-AI content for validation. I simply disregard the entire article since I know the author's MO, and I inform other HN members of it.

Same as with NFC credit cards and similar auth mechanisms. You need hardware and OS-backed encryption that is tamper-proof.
