Re:Evidence for man-made global warming hits 'gold standard' on Monday February 25, 2019 @07:54PM (#19251095)
RCP 8.5 is, even according to the IPCC, highly highly unlikely. One could say the evidence for that scenario is... not overwhelming, or even whelming.

Evidence for "just what" is overwhelming... you find out the "just what" is nothing much, really.

There's a correlation between CO2 rise and a very small temperature increase, tht may or may not be a big deal. We don't know.

Re:Evidence for man-made global warming hits 'gold standard' on Monday February 25, 2019 @07:41PM (#19251014)
I deny creation science. I am a denier.
Re:Evidence for man-made global warming hits 'gold standard' on Monday February 25, 2019 @07:38PM (#19250986)
I deride it based on bad journalism AND bad science.

Not all climate science is bad, of course.

The kind that takes an RCP of 8.5 with zero chance of happening and uses it as an input to policy recommendations is bad science.

Attributing current weather extremes (hint, occurrences are non Gaussian) is bad science.

Releasing doom and gloom predictions to the media before peer review that are then ripped apart (but not covered by media) is bad science.

Re:Evidence for man-made global warming hits 'gold standard' on Monday February 25, 2019 @07:33PM (#19250942)
Except the followup inflammatory comments, of course.

I used to evaluate scientific contracts for the federal government. I was lied to on a monthly basis.

Scientific fraud is not a thing of the past. It's not even rare.

Karl Popper is turning over in his grave.

You compost it.
Re:Why Empathy Is the Secret Sauce for Good Software Development on Thursday February 14, 2019 @07:33AM (#19161383)
There's been an odious trend "coaching" as an actual job title lately - promoting cooperation and positive environments as if the acts of just listening and inclusivity can make even incompetent technology teams better.

It can only make competent technologists and receptive junior technologists who wish to learn better. Caring what the dead wood thinks is a recipe for an inferior product.

Empathy is not a solution for turning dead wood into live wood. There's negative value in making incompetents feel like equal members of a team.

After reading this thread, I think I've discovered the real reason new physics isn't being done.
Most of them don't have the education to know the definition of a false equivalence.

That you can seriously entertain Republicans would remove black freedoms if not for Black Lives Matter just turned this thread into one where you can rant away without my participation.

I'm learning to walk away from hate.

I come from a very right-leaning area. I was quite surprised to find that everyone I knew supported the daily killing and torture of Jews... because that is what Nazis do, right?

I was also quite surprised to hear that my community wants to take away rights from black people, which I heard in a radio ad not so long ago.

The left has its equal share of hobgoblins.

Assuming that the "cure" refers to some form of blasphemy law, then it is actually apropos, although devoid of explanation, sure.

I'm assuming you are liberal. Go read Popehat's views on blasphemy laws. He's liberal.

It certainly did connect less educated. This is a only part of the picture - the misinformation crisis also involves the miseducated.

The quality of our collegiate has been much displaced by the rise of the true-believing college administrator with authority to suppress unorthodox curriculum and research.

Facebook ALSO gives this cancer a platform.

I wouldn't expect this crowd to believe it even with a solid source.
It is most certainly not fine.

Regardless of individual choices to share private data, the platform itself is a large step in the direction of something horrible.

My hat to you, sir. Sometimes, the best incentive for honesty is the punishment of dishonesty.
Re:3 Reasons Mainstream News Is Awful on Saturday October 06, 2018 @10:00PM (#18158476)
I wish you luck, amigo. If you get traction, the next two challenges will be to prevent people from gaming your rankings, and to prevent experts with undeserved cultural authority from monopolizing results in their area of expertise.

How do you allow for multiple schools of thought and also whittle away the dead wood?

Even if you don't succeed, you may pave the way, and that is no small thing.

Re:Michigan Gambled on Charter Schools. Its Children Lost on Tuesday September 05, 2017 @07:47PM (#15180019)
The teachers' unions are one of the highest donors to the Democratic Party. At the top support is almost purely financially motivated. By the time the support message reaches the Democratic rank-and-file, the message becomes more emotional in nature.
Re:Why It's Useful to Talk to People You Don't Agree With on Friday August 25, 2017 @08:46PM (#15103435)
Good old-fashioned demagoguery is alive and well in both major American parties, and many small ones.

The present system depends on outrage. So much money is spent to cause it. I don't see this changing without major calamity.

The Democrats own this as well. When the rank-and-file realize that, there will be talk. Slate, ThinkProgress, and other rags hardly comprise a barometer for impartial documentation. They're just as guilty as Sean Hannity.

I wonder if the Friday announcement will dampen reporting on this next week.

Its a shame, really, I actually agree with a lot you have to say.

Mormons are fair game too.

LOL can you imagine if the South Park writers made a Broadway play mocking Muhammad?

I can only imagine all of the openminded liberal attendees laughing at all of the mockery like they laugh at the mockery of the Mormon religion.

The current chattering class views on race are fucking sick.

Re:Are You Downplaying Luck’s Role in Your Life? on Thursday August 24, 2017 @01:17AM (#15087776)
Wow, all that insight from one post? I think I should be reading your memoir, instead. Clearly your insight even exceeds your subtle mastery of irony!

Totally sorry if I was rude. I can help you with what those words above mean if you like.

Re:Are You Downplaying Luck’s Role in Your Life? on Thursday August 24, 2017 @12:14AM (#15087549)
Hopefully someone smart enough to explain my point to the New York Times. Their journalists are a little... dense.
Re:Are You Downplaying Luck’s Role in Your Life? on Wednesday August 23, 2017 @11:40PM (#15087427)
I am not sure what that means in this context. I will assume I have touched a nerve and you wish to rebut. Your rebuttal asserts that a black woman would enjoy my brothers' advantages, and vice-versa. Except the saying is advice to stop worrying about one's life situation, which seems counterintuitive to whatever point you were trying to make.

If I'm incorrect, I'm sorry for misreading you.

Re:Are You Downplaying Luck’s Role in Your Life? on Wednesday August 23, 2017 @10:26PM (#15087156)
Thanks for this insight. I think all of these things could easily permanently handicap anyone.

And I have serious respect for those who manage to overcome these issues, if luckily.

Re:Are You Downplaying Luck’s Role in Your Life? on Wednesday August 23, 2017 @10:21PM (#15087138)
Its an easy concept to grok, but I ain't buyin it, homes.

Sure, you can be born poor, and that makes life hard. I've seen it, or more appropriately my dad did.

And while he picked himself up by the bootstraps, thats increasingly hard to do nowadays.

Ask my poor white brothers who have a HARDER time than someone who can get the Racial Bonus of Hiring +1.

Its your stupid obsession with the decades-expired innate disadvantage of color which is getting you mocked, and for good reason.

Re:Are You Downplaying Luck’s Role in Your Life? on Wednesday August 23, 2017 @10:05PM (#15087073)
I know a lot of poor white dudes in West Virginia. Amazing how being white and male brought them luck and overrode all forms of class discrimination against them...

Oh wait, no it didn't.

Funny how I can dress in a hoodie, fake a pimp walk, and get an equal amount of discrimination against me.

Or put in some fake teeth and speak with a southern accent.

Or just be myself and experience discrimination when in a poorer neighborhood.

Its mostly about class nowadays, except in isolated bumfuck areas way out of the cities.

Or perhaps another more honest source, who is upfront about the statistical uncertainties underlying all but the most basic climate science.

Hell if you want a good scaremongering, there are some old Van Impe videos around somewhere.

Or the MWP, which ended about 700 years ago. Which also coincides with an Indian Warming Period.
Re:Summers Are Getting Hotter on Saturday July 29, 2017 @09:08AM (#14881030)
The data points become invalid. You can't just adjust them to become valid, then you are no longer measuring. You are telling the data what to be. There is no math that can do this, which is WHY apolitical physicists/engineers/mathtypes mock climate science.

When doctors tell you normal body temperature is 98 degrees they are dumbing it down for you, instead of relying on bad sampling from the past.

Not that medical science is that great either.
