What do you mean “what’s the thinking?”
Re:William Nordhaus has died on Saturday October 31, 2026 @06:42PM (#50320969)
The “damage” is that he showed with reasonable assumptions that climate change might not be as damaging as some claim? And the research was good enough to win the Nobel prize? That’s why it is damaging?
Re:William Nordhaus has died on Saturday October 31, 2026 @06:37PM (#50320947)
He won the Nobel prize for that climate change research…
Re:Big Tech's thirst for water is sparking a global resistance on Wednesday October 28, 2026 @04:18PM (#50280297)
Why do you assume there is any real impact on local water districts? The evidence isn't strong there is much of an impact.
Re:Big Tech's thirst for water is sparking a global resistance on Wednesday October 28, 2026 @04:17PM (#50280275)
This is as weak article. For example, it says, "A hyperscale data center can suck up between 1 and 5 million gallons of water a day..." but does not cite a source. It also says, "Data centers end up competing with communities over their potable water supply." Not really. Data centers have to buy potable water, so unless the water providers are selling water too cheaply, what's the problem?
Re:Git for US Legislation on Wednesday October 28, 2026 @12:15PM (#50276103)
What do you see the value? What would this add? All of the data is currently available? What am I missing?
Because Joe Biden was too old and shouldn’t have started to run for President again and because Kamala Harris was a bad candidate? Or do you mean something else? You can complain about Trump, but the people had a choice.
Re:Things that apparently cause cancer on Friday October 02, 2026 @09:54PM (#49940684)
Do you think Costco really is associated with 2.2 million deaths?
Re:Things that apparently cause cancer on Friday October 02, 2026 @09:39PM (#49940615)
Do Tilson and Stein have more or less of a vested interest than the people who wrote the studies they are criticizing? It’s not obvious to me that they are more (or less) conflicted.
Does anyone have any good experiences with copilot? I have never heard anyone say anything good about it.
Is Darwin TTS from Fish Audio? It wasn't clear when I searched for it.
No. The modern grid has little relation to capitalism. There is some private ownership, but there are massive government barriers to entry and massive regulation of the system.
Re:The UK's War on Anonymity Has Come to America on Monday August 10, 2026 @09:12PM (#49252099)
You are giving them way, way, way too much credit. They are not planning for a future economic crisis.
Re:Obviously, DOGE Did Not Save Money on Friday August 07, 2026 @02:03AM (#49206419)
Sure there were some people involved in DOGE that had good motives, but overall they assumed that history began yesterday and that they were the only people that had thought about reducing the size of government. This was a recipe for disaster.
This is exactly who it sounds like Dvorak was. I never got to know him like that, but being a public curmudgeon, but private warm-hearted person is a pretty great compliment.
I enjoyed John and Leo butting heads. I agree that it was great. It's a bummer they haven't done that for a long time.
I write Donald sometimes. If you say Donald in the right context we know who are talking about. Or Kier or Emmanuel. There is nothing wrong with first names of public figures.
So far, the data are clear--data centers are not increasing electricity rates. Those are the facts. https://www.instituteforenergyresearch.org/the-grid/the-numb... This may change in the future, but so far, there is no statistically significant correlation.

Not only that, but states with increasing electricity consumption have lower rates. So it's possible data center will lead to lower rates.

Except the environment in the U.S.—better air quality than almost all of Europe. Except natural beauty in the U.S.— the U.S. has some truly beautiful places to visit and to live. The people are very friendly, especially outside of the cities. These are all good things about the U.S. that has nothing to do with the fact that the U.S. is rich (actually the U.S. being rich is one reason air quality is improving and better than Europe).
Re:The Pack That Killed the Pack Mule on Thursday May 28, 2026 @11:20PM (#48318613)
I also had a Kelty pack. It was great for the time.
Types of energy are not fungible. In some circumstances they are, but not always.
That may be true, but also according to data from the U.S. Energy Information Administration, global oil production is up over 8% since 2017 (2017-2025). https://www.eia.gov/outlooks/steo/data/browser/#/?v=6&f=A&s=...
Nor does it say how much subsidence the satellite documented.
I mean, the likely democratic senate nominee literally has a nazi tattoo. Fascism still has its fans.
Re:A Man Who Invented the Future on Saturday April 25, 2026 @08:43AM (#47901026)
I read some AI slop earlier today and then read this. The AI slop was better than whatever this is.

The article concludes, stating that LLMs are the “apotheosis of knowledge stripped of animating spirit and reduced to mere utility.” Maybe, but LLMs have far more utility than this directionless essay.
Re:NSA is using Anthropic's Mythos despite blacklist on Monday April 20, 2026 @07:28AM (#47832788)
It’s funny that you say that tweets are US policy when the Supreme Court struck down Trump’s tariffs.
Re:The Shinkansen on Tuesday April 14, 2026 @07:29AM (#47764194)
What is this corruption you are talking about? What specifically are you talking about? Things you don’t like aren’t necessarily the result of corruption.
Re:The Shinkansen on Tuesday April 14, 2026 @07:24AM (#47764147)
The U.S. can build trains and has a good rail system—for freight not passengers. It’s not obvious how Japan moves freight, but the U.S.’s rail system evolved to move freight efficiently. That is a huge difference and not necessarily the result of corruption or incompetence.
