Re:Postgres 19 is late, and it's AI's fault on Monday November 02, 2026 @01:32AM (#50333745)
The process should now be: write your specs in lean, LLMs fill the gaps, then you translate the proof into your end product software. Otherwise LLMs will simply keep finding bugs, both in old and new code.
Re:Postgres 19 is late, and it's AI's fault on Monday November 02, 2026 @01:11AM (#50333642)
Medicine is fuzzy, software is mostly maths. You can prove your software has no bugs and you increasingly should be proving that. The hard part is knowing if what you prove is what the software is doing.
Re:Postgres 19 is late, and it's AI's fault on Monday November 02, 2026 @01:08AM (#50333623)
Disagree. The takeaway is that software is much harder to write correctly and securely than almost everyone has internalized. The amount of vulnerabilities released in the past couple weeks makes me think writing software by hand will soon be not only uneconomical, but mostly irresponsible.
I see not only me tried to give astra insufficiently described tasks

Token providers in aggregate work a bit like airlines so the end pricing should also work a bit like airlines; expect budget tokens, fast boarding tokens, window seat tokens, last minute tokens, miles for tokens, … and naturally prices fluctuating by the hour.

I disagree. I would gladly hear why they think there are no privacy concerns or why they don’t care about their privacy so much. I find it hard to understand.

The fact that it made the browser itself impossible to monetize to fund development was a part of it. They were an antitrust insurance to Google and tried lots of stuff to improve its position. Granted they failed, sometimes quite spectacularly, but I still drive Firefox for personal use.
Re:Gemini 4 Carbon on Thursday October 29, 2026 @02:35AM (#50285249)
It was the rare confluence of people needing the same thing the megacorp showing them ads needed. We all benefited, no hard feelings, but always remember to look at where the puck is going.
Not too far fetched to say this potentially solves continual learning, which is a scary prospect. Wonder what ram and disk prices will go to once every model needs its own long term memory capacity and not just weights and cache.

I had an idea of splicing a z3 solver into the weights of a sufficiently smart model after the first chatgpt release in what feels like a glaciation event ago so the things could do logic and literally make no mistakes. Was never in a position to follow up. We’re almost here now.

Haven’t tried opus 5, sol 6 or haiku 4.5 I see

millenium? they'll be solved by then; but hopefully there are some unsolved ones left
'biology moves at the speed of life' is a fantastic quote that should ground everyone's expectations - unless there's a revolutionary advancement in simming life, do not think that we'll see the same pace of progress as we've seen in software engineering or maths.
Re:The Exponential Time Hypothesis Is False [pdf] on Tuesday October 27, 2026 @01:23AM (#50254998)
Dropping ultra hard problems on those things and giving them reward when lean accepts the proof sound like an obvious RL environment tbh
What a time to be alive honestly. Can’t know what one will wake up to
Re:Anthropic S-1 on Monday October 26, 2026 @11:31AM (#50245460)
Why? Whatever's vested is yours.
Re:Anthropic S-1 on Monday October 26, 2026 @10:06AM (#50243958)
Yes, I'm buying. Alphabet.
Re:Anthropic S-1 on Monday October 26, 2026 @10:06AM (#50243950)
S-1 states directly that some of the shares sold in the IPO are sold by current shareholders.

Employees are a different matter, lockouts are for them not quitting immediately. My bet is that a few of high profile departures recently is exactly for this reason: no lockout if you aren't employed anymore.

Re:Anthropic S-1 on Monday October 26, 2026 @09:34AM (#50243417)
Now, hence IPO.
Re:Anthropic S-1 on Monday October 26, 2026 @09:32AM (#50243385)
Amount of early money waiting to exit is absolutely staggering, wonder if there’s enough retail to buy the leftovers without crashing the price. Reminder everyone with money who wanted in before IPO got in!
Let’s not forget that Luna max is actually extremely capable for the price, you can get a lot done on the $20 sub.

Haven’t tried haiku 5.5, I expect it to simply run out too fast, but they did change the price below 100k tokens recently; perhaps I should check it out.

with programming languages which just rehash ideas (not saying it's a bad thing mind you! a good mix is better than a sum of its parts) you can nowadays get literally years of work in a week. truly novel stuff like bend2 takes longer (ask Victor), but I expect the next generation of models to compress those timelines, too (if the next generation is allowed to be released, since the security brouhaha going on now is seriously concerning)
Re:We should be more ambitious with the software we build on Sunday October 25, 2026 @02:14AM (#50228811)
‘Having to work for money’ beats ‘having to hunt and farm for food’ and it’s technically a small step away.

‘Not having to work and being warm and fed’ is called being a pet. Some cats and dogs enjoy this life greatly. I’ve been thinking about this a lot recently.

Re:We should be more ambitious with the software we build on Sunday October 25, 2026 @01:54AM (#50228733)
Rewrite X in Y is an ideal RL task given you have X as an oracle trivially.
Re:No Signs of AI Payoff Outside the Tech Sector on Saturday October 24, 2026 @04:22PM (#50224814)
most lawyers haven't tried fable and astra ultrafast yet.

those who did are rather convinced it's over, for juniors at least.

we lost so much with SPAs and js everywhere.

htmx will save us!

It’s much easier if you can simply not coordinate. Bonus points if that doesn’t mean you need an atomic clock in your rack
