It has that "version 1" aesthetic of anything Apple makes. Now that they have shown it to the world, we should all agree that Apple can skip to their version 4 design.
> .. panels over water makes them run colder ..Is the suggestion here that there is some heat transfer from the panels to the water? If so doesn't that introduce a different sort of problem?
I hope all the cool people doing all the cool things in current year are not doing cool vandalism just because its a cool thing-to-do that they saw on Reddit in current year. Other cool things cool people are into in current year; Cyber trucks are still on the road, and data centers are still being built.
The obvious question to any business leader is "why?" Why deploy resources to a project? Is this project central to our current or future revenue streams? If not, toss it out.
What are they scanning? Are they just trying to figure out what devices are in range?
For what its worth Ross Perot had an ominous take on the effects of free trade back in the 90s with his "giant sucking sound" observation.
This is what lawmakers that don't want to deal with the real life issues do. They work on nonsense laws while citizens live in squalor.
I gave up on and unsubscribed from the Times about 20+ years ago. Even back then the unsubscribe process was painful. I guess nothing has changed.
A half decent Board of Directors at The Onion mothership would have asked the question: Is this what we should be spending time and money on?
What recourse would Illinois have against open-source operating systems? Anyone can roll their own Linux distro and share it with whomever they want.
Some of the "news" items these days read more like suggestions.
Immigration enforcement is a hot topic today hence why you see lots of such stories. The reality is the federal gov has been aggressive in its enforcement for decades. ICE took a break during the Obama and Biden years for some reason. Might explain younger people are surprised by the renewed enforcement.
Remember that scene in the show Seinfeld where Babu Bhatt is taken from his house for expired immigration papers? That was in 1993.
As presented, that dude's story as makes little sense to anyone familiar with the immigration process. There is more to this story, I wish the reporter would just tell it.
Decarbonization needs to happen anyway - that statement is issued as if its fact. A realist would would posit that energy independence, or energy security and its underlying national security implications should be arrived at by any means necessary, carbon or non-carbon based.
There is a reason they publish opeds right next to hard news. Its not by accident.
Concerns about inconsequential water usage at datacenters is a far more welcome problem for the the industry than the other real issues they could be dealing with. People distracted by water concerns will not notice the very real energy usage and AI ethics/practices issues.
Say what you want but the industry has figured out how to manage public perception and sentiment. Water usage problem is easy to fix, while energy usage is a far tougher nut to crack.
Federal subsidies don't stop at paying for much of the bus purchase costs, they are also paying for much of the roads and bridges the busses run on. Subsides cover of the operating costs, especially labor and energy. And at the very end, the reason most localities are able to offer free rides or very low cost rides is because federal dollars are subsidizing the final ride fares.
I'll argue that this Woit post is no better. Its lazy. What was the point?
Obviously, the next move is to build and sell the new iPhone Air 2 which has a two-day battery and improved camera system.
For better or worse the man is exposing the mindboggling scale of deindustrialization that was hidden underneath America's transition to a "knowledge economy". Decades of failed economic policy has led America to this point.
Technically, they are leaving the front door open to all interested parties
New allies, same as the old allies.
The cynic in me sees people building careers off promotion of pseudo-science, and other on the creation of content around said pseudo-science. Reminds me of string theory for some reason.
What does it mean when I get better and better at picking blues/greens on second or third attempts? Does it mean my ability to pick colors can be somehow influenced or improved?
Patreon also stands to gain from this change. Come think of it, the new arrangement is a win for everyone involved - except the actual patrons ofcourse.
Heaven knows Apple would never give me anything for free. So, Apple will have to PAY ME to try their beta product. The era of free work is over.
I totally agree. I have also been captivated by the oral arguments. To the extent that I find myself pre-researching some of the cases' background beforehand. Makes for compelling entertainment when you have a sense on why the justices approach questioning the way that they do. Beats any podcast I know.
Well...they will just sell your $900 debt to a brass-knuckled debt collector for $19. That's what I would do.
A major vendor did something similar to us about a decade ago. Brand new notebooks bricked after the vendor's tech support directed us to install a "required" system update. Vendor claimed that they we're not liable for the damage and pointed to their End User Agreement and Warranty policy. Turns out they had clauses that stated that the vendor was not responsible for damage to devices caused by firmware or BIOS updates. We would later learn that the required system update included a BIOS update responsible for the damage. Its been over a decade since we've even considered a purchase from them again.
Call it what it is: censorship.
Also, there is an interesting recent study from a group at Vanderbilt University that looked at the effect that European speech regulations have in muzzling of online speech. Featured in Reason Mag.
