You and the parent comment are both true enough.
As an engineer writing software and running a small team I'd flirt with the idea of "moving up". Then I'd really study what the VPs and CEOs actually did and realize that I didn't have any real desire to do that all day everyday. I could do it but it would require me to rewire my psyche and soul (not saying it's bad, just not for me).
I asked Gemini the parent question and got a very comprehensive answer. I didn't want to cut/paste it here because the villagers have torches. Your summation is very good and took some effort, thanks!
This is Iceland, a very homogenous population.
And what-about the effect on teachers and staff? Don't they matter?
I'm being a bit dismissive. This is however a very very small study.
Just using an iPad trains me to touch the screen. Non touch laptops are the holdouts. This will all be forgotten soon enough because a non-touch display is archaic. My opinion doesn't matter it's only a matter of time. Please name displays in your life without touch (large TV for sure but even they will eventually have touch).
It's expectation. Think of all the screens in your life that you interact with and when you can't touch them it feels broken (at least to me). So I don't use my laptop as a tablet but when some dialog pops up I want to touch the cancel button. Or I'm helping someone with a task and reaching to move a window directly is natural.
So it is just table stakes at this point.
Spelling Orge is just a QA test. Details matter but so does the larger picture.
I appreciate you diving into the details, that's helpful to me. I've reread their post. They do say Claude many times so yes it's clear they are framing their work this way.
We have seen how these large models learn high order levels of understanding that is unexpected, e.g. physics in video generation. That makes me not want to dismiss the work in this area particularly when paired with orders of magnitude more computation being applied than us normies have access to.
This almost seems like catch-up to Google DeepMind stuff where it is research for research sake. So in that sense I can see the skepticism where one can look at this as taking Claude and pouring it over a problem like sweet LLM syrup that will make it all taste great.
Hopefully that's not the case.
I am confused. Someone put in place a system that would allow journalists or citizens to meaningfully engage with the law in a much better way than they can now.
However you are proposing that journalists as a homogenous group do some extra work. I think that's a great thing but I don't get why you say the press aren't doing their job when they are at an historical low of compensation and respect.
If sounds like you are outsourcing your rage at the legislature and the press and journalists are the problem?
Sticking to the FTA someone made a first step in version tracking legislative texts but you do not think they've done enough?
Calling these "machines" LLMs seems to sell the process short. Using the same style of attention in a different domain is very valuable. An LLM wasn't what created a video of a panda on the moon. I am not remotely an expert, just a software person with a lot of interest over the years.
I didn't see any comments related to that - now I understand. Your reply does not seem to be in good faith, then you pick on the poster not the message.
Interesting. In TFA they don't focus on that, they say:
"Developing a drug involves many varied tasks: doing early research to identify a target for a drug and the right type of drug to engage it, designing a molecule with the right properties, optimizing it to be manufactured reliably at scale, drafting the regulatory filings needed to run clinical trials, designing and administering those trials, and much more.
Our strategy to realize AI’s medical benefits is based on having AI increasingly involved in all of these tasks."
I'm super glad that you've been hopeful for this! But we must always focus on the wording.
I am again so disappointed with the discourse about AI in these threads. It rarely if ever focuses on anything remotely technical. People just trot out their agenda and their opinions (much like what I am doing now). We are building civilization level tools and the most technical analysis I see is that the blog post announcing it was written by an LLM (it wasn't) or that an ogre riding a unicorn into the clouds of Venus was missing a claw (wth?).
Yah, meta is discouraged here but why are we as a community putting up with this level of meta disruption? I guess I'm supposed to adapt to the new community but there's nothing there there.
I will stick with the more technical posts here and avoid anything to do with a new AI model and the complete and shocking thoughtlessness of the commenters (most of them).
[edit: grammar and spelling]
It starts at $1500 not $1700
First known use of factuality was in 1859. It's a "real" word. You can look it up.
Interesting. I researched what you referenced. This is a fantastic "hobby project" level of engineering but if one is truly tasked with this level of metrology there are still many aspects that need to be addressed and corrected for. Usually that means there is a lot of money on the line and one can't mess it up. Hence the high price tag of established industry accepted solutions. -whew- I wrote that myself.
I'm not an expert but the video is very comprehensive. There is closed loop control that is extremely precise in a relative way. In this domain it's all relative anyway because there's no GPS so to speak. It's all reference frames and 3-2-1 locality. [edit: ahhh at 21:47 in the video he says (paraphrasing) "there is offset due to thermal drift of the plastic parts as they get warmed by the motors". ]
I was surprised to see this here and was wondering if he updated anything from a year ago when I first watched it. Doesn't seem like it but I haven't dug into it. Really nice stuff and I'm hoping he got a job from it or got really busy doing stuff around it that pays the bills.

Fascinating. Read up on it, thanks for the info! I am wrong. I was tossing out a dismissive as one does and shouldn't do.
Reminds me of the Vaqueros in Hawaii for whatever reason.
Yes, to me that is catering to your audience. It also seems to overlap with coming back from your London trip with a British accent.
For her voice register change, where's the line or the gray area? It's a very personal human thing. I find her to be oriented around how she presents herself and how she is perceived. Then she uses her impressive talents to guide and manipulate.
I find her unnerving but also a great example of how the eyes are really part of the brain.
[edit: a lot, same general idea but composed bester[
There are no cowboys in Florida. Clownboys.
This is what stood out to me. They did the actual work of testing and documenting deployments on several platforms. It's a bit of upping the standard for open weights instead of just posting the blob and letting the community figure it out.
It makes sense from a provider standpoint. If you are going to give it away for free what is the end game? Helping build the world around your model such that it is a pathway that leads to greater adoption of your ecosystem is smart. Dev relations in a way.
Yes you need big compute to deploy this locally but $20-30K in hardware for specialty markets is nothing.
This isn't an accident. It is revealing a strategy.
How do they do with staying on and then restarting everything after power off? Can they automatically repower?
I don't have my embedded macbook fully configured but gemini says I can get it to repower itself.
By repower I mean if the power goes out and then returns the machine needs to power on and boot.
I have a couple of older Chromebooks I use in rando locations (basement, shop, car, rv, boat etc). And they are great for that casual scene-specific use. Very much recommend and amazing what you can get for sub $50 easily.
One can create a gmail account like [email protected] to sync everything too without touching your main google account. Very handy.
[edit: one thing about the M1 is that it has native h.264 h.265 and prores hardware encoder decoders if you are doing video intake of multiple streams]
Just FYI you can get a M1 Macbook Air with a broken or cracked screen for about $250 on eBay. It's a headless device at that point but it has a keyboard and touchpad.
I use it for my Home Assistant setup and more. It still has headroom. No fan, very low power consumption. Not true Linux container stuff but pretty much everything works on it in this area.
This is about sub sea pressure where it reaches a thousand atmospheres. So a space telescope in zero atmosphere doesn't help.
That's not what you said. You said the lab told it to "go rogue".
Wrong. Please read the incident write ups before making such a misinformed statement
