News for hackers. Stuff that matters.

b0rtb0rt

yes because captain picard said them

writers are dime a dozen, how many patrick stewarts were there?

also there’s not a version of ds9 that doesn’t look like shit, it never got the upscale treatment that TOS and TNG got
Re:Hackers expose the identities of more than 40k DHS employees on Thursday October 29, 2026 @02:29PM (#50293751)
enforcing laws is like racist and sad and stuff
the researchers don’t care, you have to be a psychopath to even be willing to do stuff this in the first place
name one important breakthrough that actually affects people’s lives that came from this research

these monkeys die to become data for some grad student’s poorly thought out research experiments

i work at a major cloud provider and the vast majority of the services are written in java
is this a joke?
don’t commit crimes, don’t get caned

seems pretty straightforward

And then those dense cities proceed to not spend that money on infra maintenance and instead use the money to buy free drugs for homeless people
everyone actually thought taco bell was healthy food until reading your comment
Re:Leave your (Apple) watch at the door on Thursday October 15, 2026 @08:49PM (#50112311)
i take as long as i want when i go on a walk. i like seeing how many calories ive burned while walking. i also like keeping track of my workouts to see if im improving. why is this sad to you?
Re:Leave your (Apple) watch at the door on Wednesday October 14, 2026 @03:46PM (#50093952)
what does that have to do with measuring my heart rate and energy trends over time?
the world doesn’t support it because of this completely unproven hypothesis?
Re:Leave your (Apple) watch at the door on Tuesday October 13, 2026 @11:13AM (#50073003)
apple watch is incredibly useful for workout tracking that’s the only time i wear mine
Re:We Asked Starbucks Why Their 'Sugar-Free' Drinks Have Sugar on Wednesday October 07, 2026 @02:43PM (#49997071)
added sugar actually is totally different than naturally occurring sugar though

i’m on a no (added) sugar diet most of the time, so the effects of sugar are very noticeable when i do have it. when i have stuff with added sugar, at first it seems gross and too much and then i mysteriously have cravings for more sugar. things like milk with naturally occurring sugar don’t have that effect

so does this mean i get paramount plus for free with my hbo?
how does your brain decide what words to say and what order to say them in? how do you know that it’s not the exact same thing you’re describing but using the context of your own memories?
Re:McDonald's Is Using AI to Dynamically Price Its Burgers on Tuesday September 29, 2026 @10:16PM (#49903579)
interesting, for me the app is always way cheaper than ordering in person. but i guess i have no way of comparing with other peoples prices in their apps. what an age we live in
Re:Everyone has ADHD because we made it up on Monday September 28, 2026 @10:04PM (#49887190)
pretty much everyone is going to perform better on amphetamines
more like “they didn’t follow the rules and destroyed our nice society and dumped garbage everywhere”
Re:Tell HN: AGI Is Here on Saturday September 26, 2026 @12:38PM (#49858174)
how do you know?
Re:Tell HN: AGI Is Here on Friday September 25, 2026 @09:42PM (#49852340)
your brain just used fancy autocomplete based on past patterns to write this post

prove me wrong(you can’t)

Re:Plan Mode Is Dead on Friday September 25, 2026 @09:38PM (#49852317)
why do you even need plan mode?

“discuss your plan with me before implementing anything”

theres your plan mode

i played thru it with my kids recently and they all loved it so i would say it holds up, the steam version is fine
Re:The senior engineer death spiral on Sunday September 20, 2026 @06:34PM (#49780810)
i’m very happy in the “terminal” senior position at my company, there are higher levels but it’s fine to stay at the level that i’m at forever. i don’t need to pick up extra work because im not trying to get promoted and i can usually get by just by having smart sounding ideas in meetings, helping figuring out the more ambiguous tasks and just doing enough to meet expectations. the expectations of the higher levels seem pretty unpleasant , and the guys at lower levels than me are happy to pick up extra work because they want to get promoted lol
Re:T. Rex Had a Body Temperature of 97 Degrees on Thursday September 17, 2026 @11:34PM (#49749913)
the best part of this kind of science is that there’s no way to reproduce it or prove if it’s actually true, but it makes a great pop science article
Re:T. Rex Had a Body Temperature of 97 Degrees on Thursday September 17, 2026 @08:28PM (#49748699)
we don’t, all of this dinosaur stuff is bullshit
Re:Your car is selling your data on Monday September 14, 2026 @02:08AM (#49692603)
other drivers will assume someone else already called it in and drive past
Re:Ask HN: Are we losing our engineering literacy? on Sunday September 13, 2026 @02:03PM (#49686775)
i think the opposite is the problem

lots of people (such as yourself) who think they are really smart with no understanding of how consciousness works, confidently proclaiming what does and does not count as consciousness

“it’s just glorified autocomplete”

ok, so prove to me that the post you just wrote with your brain was doing something differently than glorified autocomplete

Re:I resigned from Anthropic today on Tuesday September 08, 2026 @10:55PM (#49620269)
oh so “all” it can do is bring down all banking and critical infrastructure services, no big deal really
