Re:Ask HN: Which TV do you recommend for privacy? on Sunday November 01, 2026 @05:26PM (#50330571)
Apple is not a “surveillance capitalism company that trains on your data to manipulate you”. The exact opposite, actually.

Source: I work at Apple. The privacy story isn’t just marketing, it’s very real and part of every discussion.

Re:The Other Epidemic: Trying to get off benzodiazepines on Wednesday October 21, 2026 @12:09PM (#50183346)
I wonder if there’s a way to predict how someone might react to them. This isn’t my experience.
Re:The Other Epidemic: Trying to get off benzodiazepines on Wednesday October 21, 2026 @12:08PM (#50183323)
Very similar. I had daily panic attacks for a while. Lorazepam and therapy helped me recognize the signs and slowly they went away.. along with how often I even took the lorazepam. It’s useful every now and then but it’s very rare.
If this is meant to be published research, its often because there’s a long lag with doing the research and getting published results back compared to how fast the AI world moves.
They’re American. Lockheed Martin isn’t part of the gov either. That’s the private/public model in the US.
I don’t know why this isn’t the majority opinion here in this western audience, but this seems like common sense to me. Why would you let the gov use foreign technology, particularly when standing in for human thought, when you have your own technology to choose from? No one is surprised we’re not buying military planes from China.
Re:Apple broke an essential presentation feature of iPads on Tuesday October 20, 2026 @11:16AM (#50167691)
> Whoever made this decision in Apple seems pretty close to flat out evil.

Could not be further from the truth. Let’s stop such nasty hate for the most minor of things; there are lots of choices one makes when designing software / interfaces / hardware and not every edge case is immediately apparent.

Disclosure: I work at Apple. I also had nothing to do with this change.

Re:Claude reveals ECDSA curve origins on Friday October 16, 2026 @03:51PM (#50123649)
Very well possible. I’m glad to see that this is all above board in the end, which further argues the case AGAINST conspiracy theories. Most people are just trying to do the right thing.
Re:Desire to Move Permanently to U.S. at New Low on Friday October 16, 2026 @01:24PM (#50121426)
This is a bit extreme.... and yes I know this admin is extreme but there are still millions who visit the US and have a perfectly normal time.
Re:New Apple TV 4K on Tuesday October 13, 2026 @11:23AM (#50073182)
It’s ok. Their app isn’t great, but the underlying technology is. Spotify can directly play to one of their speakers. Their local protocol is also well understood and you can do most things with it, so you can vibe code your own replacement app pretty easily. The problem is once you hit their cloud APIs the latency is way too high for something like a speaker.
Re:Apple HomeView on Tuesday October 13, 2026 @11:16AM (#50073045)
27 is really good. Worth the upgrade.

Disclosure: I work at Apple. But that’s also my honest opinion.

I can’t do that, and I think I’m a very capable HI. Is that really the bar?
Re:Remove and Disable Apple Macos27 AI Models Tool on Sunday October 04, 2026 @08:26PM (#49959421)
You’re missing the entire new world of personal context retrieval.
Re:Remove and Disable Apple Macos27 AI Models Tool on Sunday October 04, 2026 @05:38PM (#49958169)
Nearly everything is improved and the new Siri is great.
Re:Remove and Disable Apple Macos27 AI Models Tool on Sunday October 04, 2026 @05:37PM (#49958161)
What makes you call it crapware? The new spotlight search (from Siri) is amazing and super convenient.
I’ve changed my mind on this and think we’re already at AGI, in a jagged way. Remember we used to talk about narrow AI, which was the chess systems that beat expert humans but could do nothing else. Now models can do a wide range of tasks in very useful ways. That’s the general in AGI.

Now it seems like this ill-defined term has various other meanings attached that are separate milestones:

1. Continuous learning 2. Human-like reasoning 3. Ability to adapt to new situations and modalities 4. Being smarter than the most smart humans

And probably many more.

It’d be nice if we could get some general consensus on terminology if we’re going to debate what has or could come.

Re:DeepSeek Elastic Compute (DSec) on Sunday September 27, 2026 @01:53AM (#49863723)
They were at the frontier because they invented many of the techniques. Google already had the internet’s data well beforehand. Anthropic and OpenAI are still at the frontier today, independent of legislation.
Re:DeepSeek Elastic Compute (DSec) on Sunday September 27, 2026 @01:21AM (#49863588)
Well we do know the results. They’ve been at the frontier constantly, including developing the entire field and set of capabilities. In the beginning every OpenAI paper was basically a landmark.
Except it quickly becomes close to cable when you start adding all the streaming services up.
That’s fair as a very troubling threat. So far it hasn’t materialized. Seems to be the boy who cried wolf.
How could you possibly label the Iranian war so far a genocide?
Re:New $100k H-1B visa fee pushes tech jobs offshore on Monday September 14, 2026 @11:14AM (#49698342)
Its goal to protect the American citizen is fulfilled by economic security. If you let your industries leave, you have done a disservice to your citizens. That’s how trump got elected in the first place, and ironically it’ll only get worse because it’s the wrong solution.
Re:New $100k H-1B visa fee pushes tech jobs offshore on Monday September 14, 2026 @11:11AM (#49698285)
Are there not 10x the need of software engineers compared to other engineers, particularly in the US?
Re:New $100k H-1B visa fee pushes tech jobs offshore on Monday September 14, 2026 @11:09AM (#49698252)
Except that’s clearly not the case here.
Photo indexing is already local. What specifically are you looking for?
Re:Fable 5.1 Solves the Cyphral Distich, a 370-year-old cipher on Monday September 14, 2026 @10:07AM (#49697140)
Because this was a mystery. The other replies seem to be missing that point. It’s similar to the issue that mathematicians are having in their field right now.
Re:Fable 5.1 Solves the Cyphral Distich, a 370-year-old cipher on Sunday September 13, 2026 @07:56PM (#49690063)
Let’s say it gets to the point that we reach superintelligence. All previous puzzles can be solved. But should they? Once you solve them, it’s done. What’s left? And where’s the fun and humanity?

The Olympics exist because we want to see human skill, even though jet planes exist.

What are you talking about?
Re:Rivian's Gambit for Full Autonomy on Wednesday September 09, 2026 @10:59PM (#49637840)
I really like the way they look. Taste is subjective and. It absolute. Some people even like the cybertruck.
