How did that turn out in the end? I presume having a real number is long-term optimal in terms of keeping customers compared to showing a fake number.
Re:What Is Value? on Friday August 13, 2021 @10:57AM (#28169669)
Ha, I also wrote a post on value once. https://azatris.github.io/true-value

A bit weird and philosophical, rather than useful.

This is exactly what I wanted to hear! Awesome, thank you!
I do not know much about quantum computing. But could you explain what makes these computers quantum? Is it the configuration of these transistors to invoke some quantum phenomena?
Re:Java 16 on Tuesday March 16, 2021 @12:21PM (#26478906)
We use it on servicing the backend of an e-commerce website. The code is now 2 decades old and wonderfully refactorable to modern code.
Gold is a decentralized store of value too, to be fair.
Yes, a decentralized international payment protocol is a good answer, but it also has a currency itself embedded in it. A type of currency to make this protocol work.

The whole thing saves a lot of manpower and energy in the world, so in that regard it potentially holds a lot of value.

However, if you told me to open up Excel and calculate the approximate true value of 1 BTC, I am unable to do so.

I can imagine scenarios where for someone with very specific needs of anonymity it solves problems, but I cannot imagine any direct problems it solves for me.

I guess it is wise to sell when the market is greedy and buy when it is fearful, as long as you have the foundations in check.

I am more of a holder usually as well, unless I truly believe the price is so overvalued that it would take a lot of time before another full dip-rally cycle.

Re:Why webcams aren’t good enough on Friday January 22, 2021 @03:03PM (#25875669)
Where's the "call a friend" button in VLC?
Re:Why webcams aren’t good enough on Friday January 22, 2021 @08:59AM (#25871694)
How would that work? Which application supports it? I don't know of a native way to do this.
Re:Why webcams aren’t good enough on Friday January 22, 2021 @05:00AM (#25870159)
But given that you have a 4K RED setup in your bedroom with a studio microphone, what technology actually preserves most of the quality over the video call? Let's say both participants have fibre connections and located in the same city.
Re:Ask HN: How many hours per day do you work? on Monday December 14, 2020 @11:32AM (#25419457)
That's impressive. Do you think it will get better mentally at one point?

I guess what drives it all is that the work is meaningful, am I correct?

Re:Ask HN: How many hours per day do you work? on Monday December 14, 2020 @11:07AM (#25419107)
I would call routine coding something like you have a set of constraints and you just have to manipulate code to fit these constraints.
Re:Ask HN: How many hours per day do you work? on Monday December 14, 2020 @11:05AM (#25419076)
Exactly. :)
Re:Ask HN: How many hours per day do you work? on Monday December 14, 2020 @08:41AM (#25417357)
You can easily do routine work for 8+ hours daily. The sort of work that can potentially be automated one day. What you call "coding" is routine enough in my book.

But if you're doing something novel and solving hard problems, I think 4-5 hours would be a maximum for sure.

Re:The TikTok War on Tuesday July 14, 2020 @11:39AM (#23833208)
Since the content is curated strongly by your likes and dislikes, I am afraid your children might actually get some nasty stuff there. There's psychotic horror and soft porn. I don't think I'd trust my child with it unless they're older than 14 or so.

The dancing stuff is pretty mild and I'd say even constructive for children.

The allure, is hard to describe. The content I see is very human, people describing their experiences, doing harmless jokes on each other, or teaching something. How it differs from YouTube is that it is much more strongly tailored to your likes, and due to time constraints, skips the chuff and gets to the meat of things quicker.

Re:The TikTok War on Tuesday July 14, 2020 @10:43AM (#23832537)
I absolutely love using TikTok, but would give it up in a heartbeat for a Western replacement.

It has absolutely brought more positivity into my life. I am specifically feeding the algorithm with this intent and I get what I asked for. It is a psychological tool.

How do you differentiate between analytics that serve the author's ego and analytics that serve other purposes?

Title says 'A Recession Is Coming...', yet the contents of the article directly imply that none of the indicators clearly show that.

Re:Why no one really quits Google or Facebook on Tuesday February 05, 2019 @07:19AM (#19084621)
Would a solution to Facebook's monopoly be allowing other companies to interface into their systems and databases as it's more of a public good than a private one people can reasonably opt out of?

So I'd expect something like a company coming out allowing you to do everything Facebook does and use the same data with events and everything, but that does not ask you to give away your data.

Re:Why no one really quits Google or Facebook on Tuesday February 05, 2019 @07:15AM (#19084602)
I am not lazy, but cannot quit Facebook, as it is a valuable resource for events and keeping contact with people, both close and far.
Re:SpaceX to lay off 10% of Workforce on Saturday January 12, 2019 @03:47AM (#18890355)
If what SpaceX is doing aligns with my values very well, but I live in Europe as a software engineer, how could I help the goals of this private company? Is it even possible?
Re:The Hallmarks of Aging (2013) on Saturday January 05, 2019 @06:52AM (#18831209)
I contacted lifespan.io with a similar question and they suggested I'd join their Discord server to have a deeper discussion about how to help.
Re:Google transferred ownership of Duck.com to DuckDuckGo on Wednesday December 12, 2018 @11:26AM (#18665204)
I wish everyone used DDG for the sake of privacy, but I cannot. It just doesn't give me answers that I am expecting. It reads my mind less than Google and that's a problem.
Re:DuckDuckGo Traffic on Saturday September 29, 2018 @10:35AM (#18100566)
I wish this had better branding. You can't say "just DuckDuckGo it". It has to have a single, or at most a double-syllable name that is easy to remember. Like Google or Bing.

But maybe it's part of some sort of strategy where in the early years the branding is weird in order to gain notoriety, and then change it when the timing is right.

I think right now this is probably slowing growth. I wonder how much would duck.com cost.

Re:Ask HN: How's the Paris startup scene? on Friday August 10, 2018 @11:20AM (#17734086)
I am working in Tallinn. This is the first time I've ever heard anyone say anything good about the salaries here. I'm happy with mine, but it would be 3x higher in US and Switzerland (I have also worked there). What do you base this opinion on?
Re:Openbook social network on Tuesday July 17, 2018 @05:30AM (#17548424)
If it made any sense to the common person, the front page shouldn't have "open source" in its description. Because your average grandma has no idea what that means.

It's an insanely hard market to chew into and thus I can say they've already lost.
