Re:Not Explicit on Saturday December 30, 2017 @04:44AM (#16034569)
Not sure what he was going for with that definition of "explicit." It wasn't explicit at all.

> you can figure out a lot about your program from the source of it.

How does "implicit" not satisfy this condition? I can tell a lot about a program from the source of it implicitly as well.

Not sure what you're saying is obvious. What makes you think they can't do this on their own?
Re:There are very few suitable use cases for DynamoDB on Friday July 07, 2017 @08:18PM (#14723316)
He complains that DynamoDB doesn't work for him, then says you should instead use Google BigTable. But he doesn't offer evidence why you should use BigTable. And just says that it works for him.

I don't buy it. I've used BigTable in the past and found it to be infuriating. Now, because it works for him, I'm supposed to believe that BigTable is right for me?

Not only high-end cars.

Every Toyota comes equipped with lane following and smart cruise control. They call it Toyota Safety Sense, and even the lowest priced, $18k Corolla has it.

Yes, people absolutely prefer public transportation to cars with accommodating roads.

Have you been to Japan?

"Travel to Mars"

Ha.

Is that the trend now?

Network Effect? I have another theory.

Allo is #1 in India because a Jared paid people to download it ;)

Yes... When it made a point.

The bare skin in these photos have little to do with the content of the article.

It is NSFW.

Saw that picture and the one of the couple in the hot spring. Then I remembered, Nat Geo was recently taken over by Fox.

Ah, I thought. Explains everything.

I completely agree. The title is reductive.
Sounds like it worked great for you.
Re:Tech Prep by Facebook on Thursday October 22, 2015 @12:50AM (#10430454)
I think that's the point.
It looks like he originally built the site for himself (it made HN awhile back) and then generalized and open sourced it for everyone.
I hope this plan includes the Rich Purnell maneuver.
Re:Totally Honest Software Engineering Negotiations on Thursday September 17, 2015 @01:34PM (#10234834)
Agreed. This is more about seeing the perspective of the employer than the employee. Managers who claw their way up expect employees to do the same.

Also, it'd be interesting to see his manager's perspective in this all as he claws his way up. I'm betting there were points where, just as he thinks he's getting what he wants all along by lying (why are his lies always in parentheses?), management is thinking they had this planned all along as well.

Sounds like Instacart. How's this different?

> (asian Americans also earn more on average than white Americans, are whites being discriminated against?)

Really? Seems like an unnecessary thing to say.

If you take a closer look at the numbers, this isn't really the case. Asian households are larger, so median incomes are larger, and Asian-Americans tend to live in about 5 states, which have on average higher costs of living (and as a result higher median incomes).

Re:Iran Nuclear Deal Reached on Tuesday July 14, 2015 @12:35PM (#9886161)
I'd read this as "The US is not good at cleaning up after wars" more than whether the US is good at "kicking ass"

Source?
From the article, "Google’s system may not have 'seen' enough pictures of gorillas to learn the differences – and wouldn’t understand the significance of such a mistake, he said."

It seems to recognize gorillas just fine. I'm guessing it's more like, "may not have 'seen' enough pictures of black or dark-skinned people."

Re:Ask HN: Open source OCR library? on Thursday June 25, 2015 @12:34PM (#9779114)
I've tried using Tesseract before, the biggest of the open source libraries. It goes from "okay" to "terrible" depending on the application.

Our particular application was OCRing brick and mortar store receipts directly from emulated printer feeds (imagine printing straight to PDF). We found that Tesseract had too many built-in goodies for image scanning, like warped characters, lighting and shadow defects, and photographic artifacts. When applied directly to presumably 1 to 1 character recognition, it failed miserably.

We found that building our own software to recognize the characters on a 1 to 1 basis produced much better results. See: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/9413216/simple-digit-reco...

Re:Stripe Is the New PayPal on Thursday June 18, 2015 @02:58PM (#9740864)
I don't think thats true. I work at a startup that's recently raised our series B, and I use our customer service all the time. I always get excellent response times, and I'm treated just like every other user of our product. Our CEO spends a ton of time ensuring that operations and customer happiness are priorities. If it's a focus of the company, it's definitely possible.
Re:John Nash Has Died on Sunday May 24, 2015 @04:46PM (#9597511)
I also never understood the social norm of not wearing a seatbelt in a taxi, but went along with it for my first few years living in New York.

I think the mention of "some dude yelling in some foreign language" is unnecessary. A person's native tongue says nothing of their intellectual capacity, nor of their ability to safely navigate a city.
