Re:A Way to Manage Dotfiles on Wednesday May 12, 2021 @05:38PM (#27135461)
I have a `.gitignore` file with `*` in it to ignore all files, so I explicitly type `dotfiles add --force`.
Re:PinePhone Beta on Friday March 19, 2021 @06:56PM (#26519011)
Hardware still uses a single band WLAN. Unfortunately, I won't be able to use it because of this. The 2.4GHz band in my apartment complex is severely degraded due to the sheer amount of channel conflicts. My Netgear router can only handle 2-5Mbps.
Re:Out of the top fifty games on Steam, 70% work on Linux on Saturday March 13, 2021 @04:26PM (#26450152)
While I don't think there is anything exactly like that, I believe Geary and Mailspring come close. I personally use aerc, a CLI email client.
Re:Valve's Proton Has Enabled 7000 Windows Games on Linux on Friday March 05, 2021 @11:58AM (#26359052)
The RX 480 is far from ancient and is probably one of the best cards that I've used. When I RMA'd my RX 5700XT (which still crashes after RMA), this thing was a champ. This card is still king for 1080p gaming and can handle 1440p too.
Re:Valve's Proton Has Enabled 7000 Windows Games on Linux on Friday March 05, 2021 @11:50AM (#26358964)
The restarting issue also occurs for me on Windows 10. Although, it usually occurs 80% of the time rather than half for me. I suspect it might be due to me plugging in power to the headset after starting the system, but I've seen it occur without doing that as well, so I am unsure.
Re:Fish Shell 3.2 on Monday March 01, 2021 @08:34PM (#26310864)
Probably my favorite feature with fish is the improved globs. I can do

  **.pdf
to recursively get all pdfs or

  *{.flac,.mp3}
to only get flac and mp3 files from a directory.
Re:How I cut GTA Online loading times by 70% on Sunday February 28, 2021 @06:05PM (#26297952)
It's highly unlikely you are going to get banned on GTA even with cheats. The anti-cheat is a joke. The game is filled to the brim with cheaters. If me and my friends play, we play with cheats just to protect ourselves from other cheaters.
Re:Ask HN: What websites do you visit every day? on Friday February 19, 2021 @08:24PM (#26200461)
I don't browse it daily though. I browse it nightly ;).
Re:Wayland on Wine: A First Update on Friday February 19, 2021 @07:37PM (#26200065)
I have yet to experience this. Granted XWayland makes any utilities not running in Wayland work perfectly for me. The only issues that I have ran into were because of screen-sharing not being supported by Electron. OBS works perfectly though. However, keep in mind that I use sway. I've heard horror stories from KDE and Gnome running on Wayland, but, as far as I know, this is because they apparently have terrible implementations. The benefits for me are the lack of screen tearing and Wayland just feels smoother.
The question is where to source alternatives. It is significantly harder to find products from alternative sources. For some products, the only solution is DIY.
Re:I'm tired of this anti-Wayland horseshit on Tuesday February 02, 2021 @11:30AM (#26003017)
That's true. Hopefully Ozone will be officially released in Chromium/Electron which will make this as simple as that. At least in Discord, XOrg screenshare always gave me trouble.
Re:I'm tired of this anti-Wayland horseshit on Tuesday February 02, 2021 @11:23AM (#26002893)
I believe that this is being fixed soon if you compile Electron with "Ozone" support. Otherwise, I use the current workaround of using OBS with a "virtual webcam" which allows me to stream OBS to a webcam and just use my webcam as the screenshare. Actually ends up working better than any screenshare utility that I've used.

Still waiting on a Luxembourg KVM slice to come in stock.
Re:Fuck Cloud Messaging on Sunday September 13, 2020 @01:35PM (#24462505)
True, it's definitely not a daily driver at the moment, but the software will mature.

My friend has one with an ATT sim, and calls+SMS works just fine on postmarketOS. The UI is really sluggish though.

Re:Fuck Cloud Messaging on Sunday September 13, 2020 @12:30PM (#24461941)
Until the PinePhone gets 5Ghz, its unusable for me. I live in an apartment and 2.4Ghz has like 15% packet loss and only has 2Mbps downloads with stuttering and slow loads.
Re:Ask HN: How many email addresses do you actively use? on Sunday December 08, 2019 @04:06PM (#21738318)
Three Emails:

- [email protected] - Catch All for emails for services (account/<service>@domain.tld)

- [email protected] - Personal Email

- [email protected] - Work/Professional Email

This is why I always use PDFs as the slides. Even if there is no PDF viewer, the web browser is capable of opening it.

I'm just entering the field (19-yo), and I don't have an particular experience in the field yet. From people I've talked to, jobs that you describe are the best options. I'm particularly interested in government jobs for these reasons.
Re:OnePlus Hit by Data Breach on Friday November 22, 2019 @06:09PM (#21611088)
The great thing about OnePlus phones is that nearly all of them have LineageOS support. I just install this over OxygenOS. Also when I installed OxygenOS, I recall it asking if I wanted to provide analytics to them in the setup process.
Re:Gmail marking email from me as spam on Friday October 25, 2019 @06:38PM (#21359926)
Honestly, running an E-Mail is so tedious that I just allow Migadu to manage it for me. You have to deal with configuration (as the original poster said) and run into issues with systems just blocking you outright (especially Outlook). There are some utilities or Docker images that make it easier, but in the end its not worth the hassle. I still think domain-based email is way better than allowing G-Mail or Outlook to host your email though.
It's very easy. BitWarden has this listed in their faq. Simply just export LastPass to a CSV file and import it in BitWarden.
Re:The ReMarkable Tablet: A Review on Sunday September 22, 2019 @12:55PM (#21042386)
To each their own, I've found with my ereader that backlight (or are they frontlights?) are pointless. During the day, I always use no backlight and I find it easier on the eyes just to turn a lamp on at night.
Re:From Mac to Linux – the setup I've grown to love on Sunday August 25, 2019 @06:16PM (#20795974)
The problem I find with Arch Linux, and this really only has started happening recently, is that for some reason Arch loves to break stuff. My most unstable distribution had to do with Arch. I find that distros like Void and Alpine Linux offer more robust rolling release systems.
Even Samsung took away the headphone jack recently :(. I might as well buy a classic iPod for music listening now-a-days.
Wouldn't a keyboard be considered a mechanical interface still since you have mechanical springs, switches that convert into a digital signal which is what is used for most games.
> Physical controls that have no physical state are the worst of both worlds.

This is so true. I absolutely hate the AC knob in my car. Apparantely, they thought it was good engineering to make it infinite.

Re:The PGP Problem on Wednesday July 17, 2019 @11:22AM (#20460424)
Are we sure about this? When I downloaded my Google data, I fished around and found information related to my Amazon purchase history and etcetera. The only possible way that I can think of that Google is able to get my purchase data is from my email.
Re:Living without the modern browser on Wednesday July 10, 2019 @07:04PM (#20407492)
You can disable the new polymer layout for YouTube on Firefox using a console command. It brings back the old layout which is much faster and more functional.
Re:Google Gmail purchase history can't be deleted on Saturday July 06, 2019 @06:54PM (#20372522)
I recommend Posteo. They've been great to me so far. They are 12 euro a year and run on renewable energy plus have sane privacy standards. All payments are anonymous according to their website. But GPG will always be king for privacy.
