If I ever start caring what random people like you think about a particular subject, let alone a subject about which I already have a strong opinion, I'll be sure to let you know, ramon156.

> But because he has Down syndrome, someone told him he’s different.

Yes, and him being different is a statement of fact. Stop pretending low IQ is something to be celebrated or ignored.

I’m all for local models and getting away from Anthropic/OAI but Qwen 27B might as well be a horse drawn carriage compared to a 2026 Porsche. Like, I guess it’s useful if you had nothing better but acting like it’s comparable to anything the frontier models have is just disingenuous.

Pretty cringe, and if what I've seen at the top of university faculties is any indication, it's gonna be a shitshow. There's something to be said for at the very least the common working class man having a direct say in things, if not the deciding say in the things.

There's no modern historical indication that more degrees results in better governance.

Because nobody uses this cancer scam website lol.

If ever there was proof that this site doesn't do sarcasm, this comment being downvoted is it.

EDIT: lmao even

Nothing in the FBI's letter was untrue.

MLK Jr watched a woman get raped, and encouraged the rapists while they were doing it.

"By bugging the room, they were able to listen in on King and at least 11 others participated in what the FBI memos describe as “an orgy” on Jan. 6, 1964.

The microphones also picked up activities from the night before, when Kearse, who died in 1991, allegedly sexually assaulted one of his parishioners. According to the memos, King was in the room. The handwritten note indicates that King didn’t just observe the assault – he laughed.

Worse, instead of trying to stop the incident, the memos say King apparently offered advice to the perpetrator, encouraging the abuse."

That sucks I guess but until there’s an alternative I don’t really care.

Not really impressive at all at this point. That dragon clip was pretty awful. If you told me this page was from 2024 I’d believe you.
Re:GPT-6.1 Terra on Monday October 26, 2026 @04:45PM (#50250668)
This is kind of like Apple with the iPhone. You need 3 model products max. 3 is easily understood and people can be bothered (if they care) to track the difference. More than 3 is a mix of being redolent of ADHD (viz bad PR) while also being annoying for consumers to track the difference.

I can’t tell you the difference between the 10 different versions of the current iPhone and I can’t you the difference between the 5-6 different models put out by the Anthropics/OpenAIs of the world. At this point I just try to track the flagship and then the cheapest one or worst case I just use the flagship.

I’m sure internally there’s data showing people want choice and options but decision fatigue is of course very real.

Well you definitely missed that mark extremely badly here.

Yes please Europe - decouple from America. We are rooting for you!

Make sure you guys also make your own European-only version of the internet, too, so the rest of us (us as in the rest of the world) can stop seeing European-centric virtue signalling spam that none of us cares about. And make sure you pass bloc-wide legislation limiting all Europeans to using only that European version of the internet (this part is important).

Sincerely,

-a non-American

You weren’t under the embargo. End of story.

Nothing to apologise for.

lol

Lmao even

Encapsulates enshittification in the current era really well, actually.

The lasting memory of these guys is how they refused to listen to their users. It was insane from the beginning how little they cared what their niche demographic even wanted. It got so bad so fast that after trying to get an invite and waiting a few months by the time I got invited it was already clearly a shit show and I didn’t even bother trialling it. The WeWork of browsers.

Yeah maybe. Too much blood flow to the wrong head.
Re:When Do We Become the Person We Ought to Be? on Thursday October 22, 2026 @02:26AM (#50191890)
Judging from the chart the answer is TLDR: We don’t.
Re:When Do We Become the Person We Ought to Be? on Thursday October 22, 2026 @02:25AM (#50191885)
Were you not able to get laid or something?

I’m nearly 40 and my sex drive has always been insane and to this day is higher (much higher) than young people I know. I don’t have sex any less than I did when I was younger but being less angry and less dissatisfied with one’s life just seems to be part of getting older. I know there’s that (hilarious) line in The Republic from the old man about not being a slave to his sex drive anymore but I always took that as more of a ‘women are more trouble than they’re worth’ kind of thing. Surely sex is a sine qua non of being satisfied with one’s life.

Libido motivates so many things in life that I’m not sure that I’d be bothered getting out of bed without it.

Phrasing.

That’s what happens when there aren’t druggies and nut jobs in public everywhere.

Yes, and? This would be a boon for the rest of the world.

Re:RPKI now protects 70% of internet routes on Saturday October 17, 2026 @02:19AM (#50128467)
Given how much the US and China seem to be mutually interested in decoupling, I don't think that's such a bad thing in the longer term. Certainly Chinese-American business partners interested in finding ways to continue to communicate would do so.

As for Russia, good riddance.

Re:RPKI now protects 70% of internet routes on Friday October 16, 2026 @02:36AM (#50114904)
If it’s so simple to do I’m not sure why the west hasn’t already done it vis a vis Russia and China. Spam and scams would drop precipitously instantly.

And nothing of value would be lost. Quite the opposite in fact.

Well two of us have said it just today so you’ll have to update your assumption.

Steam is dogshit and it’s crazy they haven’t optimised it all in 20 years.

Re:I know why Mathematicians weep on Thursday October 15, 2026 @12:59PM (#50106639)
Because we don’t see it as something for them to be legitimately upset about, except that it’s going to disturb their ivory tower unserious profession.

If AI got significantly better at performing surgery overnight and doctors started crying about how they were going to be replaced, what do you think the public response would be? Non-doctors want the best possible care; they aren’t interested in protecting an industry. The same will be said for pilots and lawyers, too.

People dislike self-serving whingeing, end of story, but that’s doubly true when it comes out of a profession (theoretical mathematics) that is mostly practically useless.

I haven’t done the math but I’m assuming if you look at the founding fathers and life expectancy for the general population in the 18th century they would have represented what people in their 60s represent today relative to the rest of the population.

Also you can’t really talk about a geriatric population ‘voting itself into power’ if it makes up such a small proportion of the population. Young people just abstain from voting in western democracies, which is a choice just as much as voting one way or the other is. Yes, a person votes in his own self interest - that’s how that works.

Yes, in general people place a lot of value in the wisdom that comes with age so long as the person isn’t senile.

Obviously with autocrats this isn’t applicable but there’s nothing inherently nonsensical or inexplicable about why mostly old dudes rule much of the world.
