link the custom firmware!
Re:The Xteink X4 E-Ink Reader on Wednesday June 24, 2026 @02:20PM (#48663748)
what phone does it fit on? I have the X3 coming today for this very reason. The x4 is just too big and the magnets misplaced to fit on any phone I own
Re:Ask HN: What Are You Working On? (March 2026) on Monday March 09, 2026 @12:21AM (#47304856)
I’m making an RPG Engine/toolset (i.e. Final Fantasy SNES or Game boy) that targets iOS/Android and the tools themselves are shippable in the mobile client (or web if you want some actual screen real estate)
Re:Clicks Communicator on Friday January 02, 2026 @12:51PM (#46467380)
I'm with you. But what phone are you using day to day? I keep watching for linux phones or even start to wonder if Apple is finally the "lesser of two evils" :/
Re:Molly: An Improved Signal App on Friday November 28, 2025 @04:19PM (#46082848)
I just saw a blog post they’re working on this in the official app, though! Finally. Fingers crossed.
Re:Brian Wilson has died on Wednesday June 11, 2025 @01:10PM (#44249653)
My wife took me to see him a few years ago and I'm so glad. One of the most influential people in rock and roll for sure and I hope in time more people realize that.

RIP to a real one.

Re:I want an iPhone Mini-sized Android phone on Tuesday May 17, 2022 @11:47AM (#31412403)
For me, must have: - Wireless Charging

Nice to Have: - Higher refresh rate screen!

Just because we're small doesn't mean we need to have worse feature sets!

RIP to a legend
I've never really considered it a feeling of doom. It only lasts a partial second or two and you don't really have time to feel anything.

I mean, it literally can take your heart going 400 beats a minute, stop it, and instantly start going 72. It feels fucking crazy but I never have time to feel "doom" specifically.

I do know that the paramedics love administering it though haha.

Re:Alphabet in bid to buy Fitbit on Monday October 28, 2019 @12:56PM (#21378780)
My Fitbit Versa is my favorite smartwatch (and I have two Android Wear watches in a drawer that couldn't get one full WORK day of battery)

I'd love to see the Pebble hardware running Android Wear (maybe fixed by Fitbit to last longer) with Pixel branding. I'm hopeful.

Just try and recognize you're not the only person on the internet. Do right by them, and if you fuck up, apologize and move on.

If you're getting angry that you (might) upset someone else you need to take a hard look in the mirror. Not only because you're immediately acting like their feelings don't matter because you didn't MEAN to offend them. But also, why don't you have a hobby? If you do, apologize to the person you upset and move on and reclaim that time to do something productive.

Re:Apple Releases macOS X Catalina on Monday October 07, 2019 @06:59PM (#21186894)
<3

(I have this same argument with all my DEVELOPER friends who are still running Win7. Ugh)

I second almost everything here. Mainly:

> "with AI enrichment of contacts" What does this mean? Sounds vague and scary.

and

> I dislike the "Y" over "Why" in "Y not trust us". Is this supposed to be cutesy text speak or something?

I'm a former CTO of a startup and Senior Engineer at another now. I don't want to work with anything with spelling errors and I have ABOUT 30 seconds to investigate new SASS services and since I don't immediately understand what you offer, I'd just move on.

It's all fixable though, Im sure.

Re:Tesla Software Version 10.0 on Thursday September 26, 2019 @07:17PM (#21086687)
100%. Tesla is THE car for long roadtrips in the US and the narrative otherwise needs to stop.

CURRENT Superchargers charge up to 600 miles per hour. COMPLETELY dead to COMPLETELY full is like 30 minutes. But most stops to charge will only last long enough for you to pee and grab a red bull

NEW superchargers charge up to 1000 miles per hour. Do the math. You're going to have to start jogging if you want your redbull before idle fee's kick in.

Combine that with autopilot. I took a trip in a gas rental car recently and HATED it. Tesla for roadtrips for sure.

Re:Tesla Software Version 10.0 on Thursday September 26, 2019 @07:12PM (#21086643)
They changed their branding 2-3 months ago. I thought it was weird at first, but it's kinda working. I'm personally sick of all the nice car commercials looking more like a Calvin Klein cologne ad.
Re:Tesla Software Version 10.0 on Thursday September 26, 2019 @07:11PM (#21086629)
Second this. I love Android Auto. But I love my Model 3 UI more.

Re:Ask HN: What are you learning in 2019? on Sunday August 25, 2019 @03:45PM (#20795046)
How to better my mental health while simultaneously figure out how to share some of the knowledge I've obtained over the past few years with others (conferences? blogs? teaching? I don't know. Help!)
Re:35 Over 35 on Thursday August 01, 2019 @10:21PM (#20590264)
Love this. People like to think they can't do anything as they get older. That mental state will be a self fulfilling prophecy!
Re:Ask HN: Should I wait to get a new MacBook Pro? on Wednesday July 17, 2019 @04:40PM (#20463754)
No. The keyboard isn't great and the touchbar is worthless for anyone who is reading HN.

Consider getting a Dell XPS, a System76 or a Google Pixelbook for your development unless you're specifically making iOS or macOS stuff.

> I honestly don't know why people waste time building Electron apps.

Yes you do. Because some people understand UI design and know how to program in javascript/html/css and have a need to make a desktop app.

For example, a small budget indie startup has enough to make ONE version of their app to get funding. They can use JS with the same budget and launch on Web, PC, Mac, Linux, iOS and Android instead of just making a single Windows native app.

There is 100% a place for electron. You can argue that after funding they should convert to native, sure. But if you're reading HN you are definitely smart enough to know why a lot of us use electron :)

tldr; Smart use of electron is NOT for the end user. It's for the developer.

I got one. Because my electron app is a game. I don't want you interacting with text as text, it's supposed to be more of a "texture" like one would expect from a native DirectX implementation
Re:Make the Leap from JavaScript to PureScript on Wednesday May 22, 2019 @03:55PM (#19984830)
Yay new ECMA standards! Classes/decorators/scope/arrow functions have made my life SO MUCH BETTER the last 5 years
Re:Make the Leap from JavaScript to PureScript on Wednesday May 22, 2019 @02:56PM (#19984295)
Yeah it was awesome! But then years later most projects are wasting engineering time to convert their whole code base which is a bummer! That's all I'm saying.
Re:Make the Leap from JavaScript to PureScript on Wednesday May 22, 2019 @02:24PM (#19983977)
This just reminds me of "Make the Leap from Javascript to Coffeescript"

Remember where that got us?

This stuff is all really cool and fun to work on, but instead maybe we should focus on changing the JS standard for the better since we always end up working in it anyways!

Re:Ripcord – A desktop chat client for Discord and Slack on Tuesday April 09, 2019 @07:29PM (#19620070)
What do you prefer? I can think of a single thing I like more on Slack, maybe two if I'm splitting hairs (it's a dev only thing) but I moved my entire company's internal chats to Discord (where our external chat already was) because I strongly felt the opposite!
Re:What are good Linux laptops for 2019? on Wednesday March 20, 2019 @08:54PM (#19448437)
I typically use my google pixelbook recently since it lets you run a containerized linux in a secure OS but I get it if that's not your thing.

- System76 laptops are generally well reviewed. The Oryx Pro looks nice

- I had a Dell XPS15 and hated everything about it for some reason, but

- I have a Dell XPS13 and I absolutely LOVE it, so that that for what its worth

In these videos, "Autopilot" is mentioned as the culprit, which seems to be a subset of the features Tesla has.

It seems to me there are 3 layers:

(level 0: Just Adaptive Cruise Control (use radar to adjust speed up to a max). Human still steers.

- 1: Adaptive Cruise Control (use radar to adjust speed up to a max) + Autosteer (camera's watch the lane markers and follow them). This is referred to as "Autopilot"

NOTE: This is where the accidents happen. The car isn't driving towards a barrier, it's following the lane markers and hits an error state. This is also NOT self driving.

- 2: "Nav on Autopilot". This is an additional function you turn on where the car has more intelligent (use this word loosely) capabilities on highways. The car will still do everything on level 1 combined with lane changes (using cameras to detect objects and trajectories differentiating cars from trucks from pedestrians from bikes from motorcycles etc). It will still follow lane lines, but with a lot of additional information (is there an object? am I merging? am I exiting? etc)

- 3: "Full Self Driving". This is an additional package that doesn't exist to the public. Internally I'm sure they're testing the functionality but this is using all of the sensors and algorithms and likely neural networks to decide what to do. A cool point though is that all Tesla's are likely running this code in "shadow mode" where data can be collected and assumptions can be tested without endangering any actual drivers. (see here for some cool data on this: https://electrek.co/2019/03/05/tesla-autopilot-detects-stop-...). "Hey, I think the car, if full self driving SHOULD take action X. *compare to what the driver actually does and log the data" over BILLIONS of miles

So when a Tesla hits the barrier or gets in an accident, we're actually running "#1" and people start freaking out. But when we get to the capabilities of #3 a lot of the "object permanence and continuity" stuff starts to come into play.

Full Disclosure: - I drive a Model 3 every day on Autopilot 75% of the time - I only 75% think self driving is capability under the current Tesla software suite but I bought the package anyways.

You definitely aren't doing your commute in a Tesla, then.
