Discover Weekly specifically requires artists to "pitch" their songs to Spotify. If you're already following the artist, their new releases that have been pitched are supposedly guaranteed to show up on your Discover Weekly. Otherwise, I believe it's someone at Spotify who picked that song which then distributes it to "relevant" listeners.

Also I don't know if the AR/VR comment was about traveling for luxury. I read it as travel in general, like a lot more people would be able to work remotely if they could just appear at work through VR. Or instead of needing to take a flight for a business meeting in Hong Kong you could potentially strap on a headset and virtually tour a factory overseas.

Being able to see trending songs regardless of the platform is definitely a benefit for Apple, but I would also say that another possibility is that Spotify itself cuts off the integration now that Shazam is owned by their competitor.
