Well... you can write Apple Shortcuts that send AI requests to their cloud.
I often use Apple Intelligence to proofread emails before I send them. It's nice that it runs on device. I don't think I ever had a use case where it would have to use their Private Cloud though.

Now, with a tear in my eye, I wanna know about Tom. I hope this post gets to him somehow.
Re:Jony Ive Designed Ferrari Luce EV Interior on Monday February 16, 2026 @05:41AM (#47033457)
Yes, but I have a different design language in mind.
I'm no expert and don't know the full extent of what's already happening and what this ban would change, but I would say there is evidence that this is already happening.

In a recent episode of Clive Myrie's African Adventure where he goes to Ghana, he "heads to one of the world’s biggest second-hand markets to meet the designers giving discarded clothes a second chance".

They show a lady that bought a "crate" of random unsold clothes for around 500 USD, and she prays before opening it hoping it will contain clothes in good condition she can resell. The show claims that on a "good day" she can make something like 50 USD on such a crate.

They also (very) briefly show a huge landfill of what appear to be discarded clothes.

Keep in mind that this is only an entertainment show, so this is most likely only the tip of the iceberg.

Don't vibe with it. Give me a 2 door Porsche EV.

Ideally: off-site backup and archive-tier object storage in the cloud.

Some would argue that most stories in Western societies are echoing the Bible. The Matrix is in many ways the story of Jesus (Morpheus is John the Baptist).
Can you point to any official document which states it is illegal? Or any document which mentions any exceptions?
Re:Show HN: Artemis, a Calm Web Reader on Friday December 20, 2024 @10:40AM (#42472027)
I have been thinking of creating a similar app; however I wanted to do a "Sunday paper". This look nice and I like the minimalist design, but I would prefer to have solution that I can self-host.
Re:Wiby – Search Engine for the Classic Web on Monday November 18, 2024 @04:44AM (#42171040)
One of my favorite finds through Wiby is: https://thelocalyarn.com/excursus/test/index.html which I found through this article specifically: https://thelocalyarn.com/excursus/test/articles/future-proof...
It's worth noting that the article starts with the mention of Kjell Inge Røkke leaving for Switzerland, a country in which there is wealth tax. The only reason Røkke might still be interested is that as a foreigner he is able to "cut a deal" with the Government [1].

For non-UHNWI, you can have a wealth tax of 0.6% (this varies between cantons, and I'm already taking into account here cantonal and communal wealth tax).

I haven't done it myself but you can buy replacement batteries online for the Kindle Voyage; last time I checked they were like $30 and replacing it looks easy enough.

I hope this car never makes it into Europe in current form.
Re:Automakers invented the crime of jaywalking (2015) on Thursday October 12, 2023 @03:25PM (#37861884)
While I "jailwalk" pretty much all the time (in Europe), nighttime is when I am the most reluctant to do so. Poor visibility and higher chance of meeting a drunk driver.

Re:Welcome to the New Verge on Wednesday September 14, 2022 @04:23AM (#32834544)
Coincidentally Bloomberg's bold design was ushered under Joshua Topolsky, one of The Verge's founders. He then went on to found The Outline, which arguably had an even bolder design. In many ways, The Outline's premise was the same as the new The Verge. I'm curious to see if The Outline was just to early, or whether the premise is just flawed.

Discord as well. For instance the Scala community moved from gitter to discord. I couldn’t disagree more with that decision.
Do you have any good articles on what would make Kotlin better than Scala? I work only in Scala and have never touched Kotlin.
Re:The great junk transfer is coming on Wednesday May 25, 2022 @03:54AM (#31501713)
What would be the added value of that app compared to already existing options? Where I live (Switzerland) there are already several nation-wide websites where you can publish ads for things you want to sell or give away. And it is absolutely free. Furthermore, as already mentioned in the thread, many charities can clean up a home if needed.

The context makes it powerful. If I did not know it was done by an (acclaimed) artist near the end of their life, it would not be as powerful to me.
Re:Internet addiction and the habit of book reading on Saturday December 18, 2021 @04:51AM (#29603256)
I see the fact that searching for the information without the internet (or electricity in general) is more difficult as a filter to select what is relevant and discard the noise. In these cases I simply accept that I need to pick what I want to focus on.

But I am in no way advocating for a 100% electricity free lifestyle, nor am I saying that one should ditch all modern technology. Something that I do are offline days [1] during which I try to apply what I wrote about here. On other days it will depend on the urgency of the task itself.

You can of course also apply only the first part (noting down things to search later). Whatever works for you ultimately.

Having failed to truly "disconnect" in the past, my recommendation in order not to be distracted by the internet is to first and foremost write down everything that you would have the urge to google. Instead of googling it, put it on paper, and continue your activity. Once you are done you can review the points that you have wrote down, and think whether they are really worth pursuing. And if they are: stop right there! Don't google it. Think about how you could get this information without the internet.

This process has helped me rediscover atlases, dictionaries, and many other forms of offline knowledge. I almost see it as a form of survivalism: asking yourself how would you learn without electricity?

Of course there will be failures, either due to loss of focus, or maybe because of perceived boredom. But if one sticks with it, it really does become a good habit.

Re:Americans aren't willing to pay to stop climate change on Thursday July 01, 2021 @04:17PM (#27704188)
Actually, the plan was to redistribute part of the collected tax back to the population. You would get each year a certain amount of money. If you do not emit CO2 (i.e. do not drive, do not fly, have a clean heating system), you would actually earn money.
Re:Impossible to Delete Applications on iOS 14.2 on Saturday January 30, 2021 @08:09AM (#25968750)
I am on 14.4 but I don’t remember seeing anything like you mention in any 14.x version. Just long press the app you want to delete in the App Library and select “Delete App”. Otherwise go to Settings - General - iPhone Storage and select the app you want to delete and delete it from there.

Antiques Roadshow, Gardeners’ World, University Challenge, Mastermind… yes I’m a British grandpa at heart. I would pay for iPlayer to watch these.

Yes, but what if I already have a charger and I don't know where it came from?

How can I know whether I have a real of fake charger?
