Re:Why We Think Galaxy Folds Are Failing on Tuesday April 23, 2019 @06:45PM (#19733750)
And there is the assumption that this will improve greatly over future iterations.
Re:The Samsung Galaxy Fold's display seems to have problems on Thursday April 18, 2019 @12:45PM (#19692510)
I'm talking about their folding screen they use.
Re:The Samsung Galaxy Fold's display seems to have problems on Wednesday April 17, 2019 @05:49PM (#19686772)
Folding screens can certainly enabled more software based design. Its obviously a really exciting new form factor considering how prominent folding screens have been in sci fi. We all really want to have Westworld level tech. Even though we are still a ways away, its awesome to know that its becoming possible.
Eh, the Global Hawk is more of a tell it where to go instead of flying by hand it kind of drone.
> Drone pilots can be put pretty much anywhere in the world so they don't need to be forward-deployed, which will probably help attract people.

Unfortunately the USAF likes to put all their drone pilots at Beale which from what I have heard isn't a very big difference in experience from Minot.

Also right now all drones are required to be full pilots and officers. This is a big factor in the shortages problem. No one wants to through the Academy and then sit at a desk flinging a joystick around. When I was in it was asked all the time why not have warrant officers or let enlisted fly drones? Brass always said no.

I'm 100% certain Stargate isn't a documentary.
Re:Tesla Shakes Up Model 3 Lineup on Friday April 12, 2019 @12:46PM (#19646496)
You can still buy a new wrangler like that.

Getting to 37k isn't a bad accomplishment. It may not be the big number, but its still a pretty good price point. Hopefully this is the end of the chaos pricing has been the past few weeks.

I wonder if there will ever be a sub 30k car by Tesla someday. The average new car is around 37k now, so about half the market is under that.

The resolution a 10 meter telescope on Earth can make out of the moon is about 22 meters per pixel. We can yet make out the moon landing site with earth based telescope.

I think the rotation from M87 is 15 degrees off from our perspective, so yes we are looking mostly "down" at it.

The speeds and distances of the planets are well known at this point and easily predicted. By the time of establishing a permanent presence on Mars the requirements of communications would already put in place the information needed if the DSN isn't already capable of it now. The compute needed would be greater, but so would the availability of it in the future too.
Re:Unveiling the first-ever image of a black hole [video] on Wednesday April 10, 2019 @04:11PM (#19628333)
Constructing a telescope on Mars would be a valuable investment when a permanent presence is based there.

This is an amazing case of whataboutism.

I'm almost certain electronics is a major component.

It wouldn't surprise me if things changed and its actually good now.

Can Russia build 3000 Su-57?
Re:F-35's Towed Decoys on Friday March 29, 2019 @11:37AM (#19522566)
Do those price differences account for purchasing power? I am sure wages and materiels in China cost less than in the US. Since the US will build major military systems domestically its going to be much more expensive. And what is the alternative? Build less effective fighters just to match the cost?

Either way I know the major benefits of the F-35 and US fighters in general are data sharing and pilot skill. The F-35s greatest strengths lean into this.

Whats kind of funny is that Chernobyl is the newest reactor of the 3 that have failed. Both Three Mile Island and Fukushima are older reactors.
I was going to ask if this was his, I always look forward to the new one each week.
Re:Reddit and the Struggle to Detoxify the Internet (2018) on Tuesday March 05, 2019 @01:32PM (#19312863)
I like how you interpreted "very little" as none, thanks. Nothing of any value was lost anyways as both of those subs were shitty toxic places. And I am pretty sure they were banned for their mods supporting the subs being used to harass people, which violates TOS.
Re:Reddit and the Struggle to Detoxify the Internet (2018) on Tuesday March 05, 2019 @01:04PM (#19312580)
You don't seem to understand how moderation on reddit actually works. The admins have very little direct impact on it outside of the standard enforcement of spam blocking and illegal content. It is your "solution" of a diversity of standards.

> There is nothing "toxic" about the internet

There are quite a lot of terrible and toxic things on the internet.

> Federation and peer to peer seem to be the only way forwards.

Yes, one would hope the entire internet ends up like Tor. A place where you can buy drugs, hire hitman, and find child porn.

Re:The New 30-Something on Monday March 04, 2019 @11:56AM (#19302706)
Sites that have voting, like HN and Reddit, will get judgement that because of what is up voted. There is of course lots of different people, but clear trends do start to appear and that is what people view and assign to be the overall opinion.
> The guy working at the deli.

This guy would have made a lot of money selling sandwiches to tech workers.

> Why is the US so set on a policy that every other developed nation has eschewed?

Which other countries have made the security commitments that the US has? Not only being a part of NATO, but commitments to Israel, Egypt, Japan, Korea, Australia, NZ, and so on. At a minimum the US needs an active carrier in both the Atlantic and Pacific, and usually two in the Pacific. To do that you need at another minimum twice that number to rotate ships out. Then for carriers you need more for life cycle and overhauls.

Plus its always quite disingenuous to compare the US to say a country like France. The size, population, economy, etc are in completely different categories.

Recently some technologies were developed called airplanes and missiles. That changes things when before we just boats.
ITER won't become fully operational until 2035 and that is just for conducting experiments. We are still decades from commercial fusion power plants.
So a mixture of unreliable, expensive, and "20 years from now".
